This woman was brave. We need our own poetress to strike out at religious zealotry here in the United States.

The truth universal:

"My message to those who hear me is love, compassion and peace," Hilal said. "We all have to share a small planet and we need to learn how to live together."

Last year's story on this contest garnered about 12 comments, mostly from only two of us. Either there is a huge resurgence of poetic interest in America, or we've learned to flock to stories featuring photos of women with their faces covered. At any rate, it's great to see Arabic poetry attract this much attention.

Very brave words by a very brave woman. Such an open stab at the established tyranny is a good sign that an other reality is possible for the Saudi Arabian people. The fact the she earned loud cheering following her performance is also a good sign in my opinion - this shows there are actually many people who agree with her stance. If more and more of the younger generation folks can disagree with the current system, as they keep aging and the old backwards guard dies off, the country can evolve into a fairer and better place to live for each of its citizens. Bravo Hissa. May your life be long and allow you to harvest the first fruits of the seeds of freedom abnd equality you have sown.

This courageous poet and the scale or the audience for her poetry are a revealation. Where is America's million dollar poetry prize? Where are the voices or America's courageous poets heard?

What a joy it is to learn something honorable about and from Arab culture. I hope this story gets the widest possible circulation.

Like pack wolves, the males of our species grin and cower to the alpha leader---the one who is most viscious, with the loudest bark and most menacing snarl, the one who will rip the throat out of any challenger. Most men are weak and spineless, rolling over before these viscious "leaders." It is the duty of all women to stand up to these brutes and show the weaker sex of our species what being a strong human is all about.

For a better understanding of Islam and the oppression and violence towards women in Islamic countries read "Infidel" by Ayann Hirsi (Magan) Ali. It is an extraordinary personal account of life for a Muslim woman. It is one of the most powerful and important books I have read in a long time.

Not ALL women in Islam are oppressed and mistreated.

I attended and helped organize a dinner at an Islamic center along with the Muslim community last Saturday. The women who belong to the center are not oppressed. They are strong, funny, hard workers, enormously generous....as are the men.

Maybe you should move to an Islamic country
where they love women so much lol

are you some islamic agent trying so hard to make Islam
look good around here?

"Killing a human being is so easy for them, it is always an option," she told the AP”
Just one more example of human contempt, for creations of the creator?

She criticized extremism that she told AP is "creeping into our society" through fatwas.
What could Allah have been thinking, letting fatheads loose with loaded fatwas?

“Fatwas are not legally binding”
Unless signed at the bottom, by Allah himself?

“Hilal said. "We all have to share a small planet”
Let us hope you also share the prize, should you win it. Alms, for the love of Allah.
