Why'd they mod me this time?

I think that my Trader Joe devotee friends might be surprised by this.

I'm lucky - if I want seafood, I go down and pick it up at the dock about 8 blocks from my house. It limits me to what is in season, but I figure I'm helping the local economy (and it certainly needs the help). The only large grocery store we have in town is Safeway, so I'm glad to see it ranked high on the list.

I'm not so sure about Safeway. The Dominick's around the corner from my place sells pretty nasty looking fish.

Safeway announced a major initiative to build on earlier efforts in January of this year. Much of their current work is internal but will begin to find its way to stores in the coming months.

The push has to come - as always - from the consumer. Carry a little Sustainable Seafood pocket guide (available for free at http://www.montereybayaquarium.org/cr/cr_seafoodwatch/download.aspx) and you can shop wherever you like. If nobody is buying the endangered species, then they will stop carrying it soon.

I use that guide star. But, frankly I have really given up seafood except for catfish. All the reports from the Gulf of Mexico (I'm in Texas) our Gulf is just polluted. About 6 months ago there was a great honest look at the oysters here in the Gulf---all but poison. This came up last week from KVUE news on shellfish http://www.kvue.com/home/Algae-bloom-forces-much-of-Texas-Coast-to-halt-harvesting-of-some-shellfish-92018124.html
Damn shame--my family loved seafood.
How knew Target was doing a pretty good job? I knew about HEB.

That oil spill is just going to make things much worse! And Obama wants to expand offshore drilling... :(

HEB is typical of the Texas way of doing things: Screw you, Green Peace hippies, we got money to make!

In the RGV of Texas HEB and Wal Mart are about the only two compeating grocery store chains.
