There's no flag at the back garage door entrance.
But there's clearly a large enough visible sign next to the garage door, identifying a foreign consolate.
Those 3 Houston cops let power get to their heads.

hotb,
NV and SC are dropping back as TX gains a solid second place. AZ still seems like the place to most avoid, however you feel about their new law.

Cops know every building and every nook on their beat. Unless all of the officers were there for their first day, but it doesn't seem that way.
Houston's weak excuse: "Sorry, we didn't completely know our job."

Certain people should stop blaming those of us who point out the truths they prefer to ignore.

So who really cares about a diplomat from a country that has the death penalty, Tortures, and refuses health care to their citizens. these third world nations don't have any rights in my book. Actually I'm not sure about the health care issue.
10:51 AM on 05/02/2010
...holy crap, now you've put it out there...we started to sounds more and more like them... death penalty-check... tortures-check...refuses health care to their citizens-check....

It used to be that officers main job was to keep the peace, hence the name "peace officers" whose main job was to protect and serve but that was long before the civil rights movement. Today, officers police. They expect that everyone they pull over is armed and dangerous. Though a small fraction of the citizenry is so, most of us law abiding citizens are treated as if.... A 72 year old woman, or a mother with her children iin the car are tazeres because cops now go off on power trips.

We seemed to have abdicated our right to hold our police force to act in the publics well being. Maybe it will take this incident to do what decades of outrage has not. I want to say with exclusion of those who aren't trippin on power but if we, the populace, can be deemed guilty until proven other by the eyes of the law, because of a few bad apples, then they get the same in return. Its sad, because I believe putting your life on the line should garner some respect but instead, when I see a police officer behind me I get scared, because you just never know anymore and I know I'm not the only one.

The police force in America has, broadly speaking, gone rogue on us.

Until this problem is addressed and rectified, we will continue to see a vicious cycle of abuse and abuse.

Make no mistake, the police could have seen this coming, and avoided it. But they have NO -- I say NO -- compunctions about abusing the public.

Police forces in America have taken on the attitude of an alien, predatory bunch of robocops.

Precisely,
If Houston has the 3rd highest number of consulates in the country, then Houston cops should be getting weekly training on international affairs and guests. There's absolutely no reason to have something like this happen. The excuse, "Well, now we know" is juvenile. As adult cops, it's their job to look for all of these probabilities and to work them out before hand.
Of course there will always be "accidents," but they should be few and very far between. I'm not asking too much, they're the professionals, they could do it.
If the investigation shows what the story is hinting toward, then all of the cops involved, including their commanding officers, should be relieved of their jobs immediately with no pension.
Otherwise, they'll just be encouraging the next stooges to assault an international diplomat.
09:58 PM on 05/02/2010
AmericanDreamWarrior, it isn't just a few bad apples -- the system encourages the corruption we see in police throughout this country. How else to explain the despotism, the 'cowboy' mentality from coast-to-coast? I'm afraid the good cop is becoming more the exception today. It is a tough job and not many are so dedicated to public service to risk so much and earn so little, legally.
03:13 AM on 05/02/2010
Police in the US are out of control. But they are not to blame, because their behavior is tolerated and even encouraged by the people. For all the talk about the land of the free and the like, there is a strong authoritarian vein in this country, most often expressed in the way the police expect you to jump when they say so. Arrests for trivial reasons are commonplace. Brutal treatment once arrested is also commonplace. And not only police. Immigration officials, airport security officers, even nowadays airline cabin crew are getting drunk with authority. All in the name of security, and a fearful public is happily accepting it, or encouraging it in the name of law and order.
In other countries, uniformed officers are allowed and trained to exercise discretion and to have a sense of perspective. In the US, uniformed officers are trained like robots and behave accordingly.
Apologies of course to those who have retained their humanity, they are admirable, but also the exception as far as I can tell.
