This is not the Sam Walton "buy American" Wal-Mart and hasn't been for 20 years. This is the global corporate communist Wal-Mart that enslaves children in Honduras, India, China, the Philippines and Mexico to feed the need of the American consumer.
Americans have voted with their dollars to support his abusive labor practice.
All the American Corporate Communists are on notice that Living Wages are returning to America. These giants have now eliminated the Mom and Pop and continue to squeeze the communities they settle into out of individual identity but force the homoginization of materialism.

iawtc. Wal-Mart has changed drastically (for the worse) since the passing of Sam Walton. They have managed to destroy small business in every town they set up shop and set wages so low their employees also have no option to shop anywhere else. And in the towns they leave, hulking empty stores which can't be filled are left like a massive tombstone.

They represent the worst practices of corporatism.

Every day this is 'stalled', the company makes tons more to keep fighting it. And the chamber for corporate corruption has every intention and incentive of taking this all the way to john roberts so his supreme court for corporate citizens (scfcc) can bestow them with a (favorable) decision, one befitting the largest single 'citizen' on the planet.

It is true. The law does end up protecting this corporations (as "citizens") and often, while the lawyers for this company produce everything they can to make it seem as though these people who are in this fight, are not justified for doing so.

The money seems to win, and that in itself is a crime.

I've never understood the concept of "store greeters". As if I am not aware that the "greeter" is a criminally underpaid person desperate enough to take almost any job. As if it would convince me a big box store is a personable place.

Why do Americans need so much fake "niceness"?

Store greeters help fight shoplifting.
The greeter translates to, this store is my friend, I don't steal from friends.

Not true for professional shoplifter rings, but does work for that causual shop lifter.

I feel tee shirt slogans coming on. I am currently checking into a place who will actually help create some for her and her co-plaintiffs. It would work to wear these walking around Walmart, (ahem) "shopping".

No. I worked there. It is NOT better. It is exactly the same. It just has big photos of happy, youthful people with wide, bright isles and hipper stock.

When I lived in India people had the perception that we were a ridiculously litigious country. I explained that class action lawsuits have become a very effective means of social justice. We all seem to understand that the way to punish big business and force them to change is through their pocketbooks. Towanda , Betty- you have a whole lot of friends standing with you. Walmart is such a dreadful company it isn't surprising they are getting sued firts, but there are a lot of big businesses that should also be sued.

No, she was merely finding solace in the Bible. She's not one of those ministers who thinks that being a super rich televangelist was God's plan for them by exploiting their gullible followers. Her courage is admirable.

It's in the article. She thinks she's on a mission from god. That's pure lunacy. It makes her version of events questionable to say the least.

Article needs to be corrected as follows:

"...The GOP's Chamber of Commerce & CORRUPTION and other organizations, fearful that a ruling in Dukes' favor will expose other companies to costly lawsuits, have filed briefs urging dismissal of the complaint..."

The story gave very little background on how wal-mart promoted others in place of her. But I guess my big question is why cant this woman live on $15.23 per hour, and just how much does she thinks she needs to live on. Also another solution would be to find a different job.
11:23 AM on 05/02/2010
You must be living in the south. This woman as you referenced her, lives in California
and $15.23 per hour there is the same as $7.00 an hour in parts of the south. In fact,I'm
sure some people in Mississippi would ask that same question about someone in Louisiana
making that $7.00 i spoke of.Why not another job,you ask,WELL,at her age HOW CAN
SHE?You need to think before speaking-sound like someone who should be put in the
corner with a DUNCE HAT!

Southerners are taught from birth the cow brings the sauce to the bar b que.

C65, I was curious as well as to how this woman was unable to live on $15.23 per hour. I do live in the South and did not realize that there was such a large difference in the cost of living from one coast to the other. My husband is union and makes 23.00 per hour and that is considered a very good wage here in the south. So, I thank you for the explanation, it certainly makes more sense now, but the abuse was probably unnecessary as it is likely that WWRD was as unaware of the disparity as I was.

You've got to be kidding right? $15.53 after fed and state taxes is probably closer to $12 hr. Walmart (Target, JCP, etc.) rarely allows an employee to reach 40 hrs per week. After paying for rent, gas, electric, insurance, phone I'm sure she has tons left over to eat. I'm sure another job is really easy to find too. I mean the joblessness rate is only hovering at 10% or more..

You must live in a nice bubble where there is never any discrimination, prices never inflate over pay and everyone is paid fairly? I'd stay there in the bubble if I were you. Reality might bite if you enter into the world some of the rest of us live.

You go, Betty and good for you. Every woman in America should be happy with this suit because even though things have changed and the disparity is becoming less than it once was most companies still pay women less for the same work and many discriminate against women in other more subtle ways as well. I am very glad to see this. The only problem is that Wall Mart is fighting even letting the case into the courts all the way to the Supreme Court. I wonder if the case will prevail there and Betty and her co-defendants will finally get their day in Court and when that possible trial date will be.

Justice delayed is Justice denied.
