I have to agree with the 2009 NKorean reply to Clinton's 'scolding of an infant' slurs. Its unbecoming that America's top statesman and diplomat would resort to lowly matron backbiting. Obama would be wise to fast track State dept duties to a special envoy and let Clinton remain in Paris or Foggy Bottom. Statesmen are supposed to be above such personal baggage for the greater good. Obama would be wise from him and Hu to hem out this hard case.

SoS Clinton demonstrated her skill in diplomacy with North Korea in 2009 when she called them:"friendless and infantile, and best treated in the same way as tantrum-prone children." Offended, North Korea retaliated: "She is vulgar and stupid, and looks like an old biddy with a shopping trolley." http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/asia/article6724826.ece

Given this history, no change in skill set, lack of respect in both directions, and the significance of the new issue, why would the U.S. want SoS Clinton speaking for it? Isn't there a skilled DIPLOMAT somewhere who could fill the need at this tense time?

I don't know. "friendless and infantile, and best treated in the same way as tantrum-prone children." sounds like a pretty apt description to me.

I second that (or would it be, third?).

However, it isn't very diplomatic to be said in a public forum at any rate. I mean look at N.Korea's response. Simply name-calling -- sounds quite childish to me.

I do not argue with the accuracy of either statement. I do not see it as productive to engage in nation to nation personal insults. I would hope an American Secretary of State could take the high road and set an example. My hopes were often dashed, recently.

May be Obama should claim that South Korea acted stupidly, give a BS explanation the next day, then host a beer summit between the North and the South and call it a night.

Where do the Republicans come down on this? Where are DeMint, Shelby, Bohener, and Mitch? I am sure that Obama has somehow managed to screw up our reputation, and lose more respect in the eyes of the world by not attacking... but I am lost without my Real Leaders. How shall I think? Who do I write to, send my comments? Oh Sarah please explain all of this to me...

What is the proof that a NK sub deployed a torpedo? I hope that the proof is more than just the fact that a NK torpedo was recovered. I don't doubt that the NK government would do such a thing, but I want proof because Eisenhower was right about the Military Industrial Congressional Complex.

It was a NK torpedo. And, not just one painted to look like North Korea. The schematics of the missile perfectly match the schematics of the missiles they themselves manufacture.

No foreign policy expert here, but my bet is that North Korea is at the end of its run with this chapter in its history. The people are starving, modernity is calling, Kim Jong Il's sons are all in a muddle. I think this dynasty is on its last legs.

come on, this big news isn't even front page headline

what's the us gonna do, sanction iran? several countries pose direct threats to the us and iran or venezuala aren't one of them -- get with the program

if the us was contemplating a serious response, then the us should have responded before the secretary made the announcement

Its called a set up. North Korea denies it was responsible for the March sinking and has threatened to retaliate against any attempt to punish it with "all-out war." So it looks like SK fired the first shot. Im not saying this is logical nor di i support NK, im just saying this is the way NK starts a war. Its a little late now for Sec.Clinton to bang the war drums. Besides it only plays into the hands of NK. Stay away from their shores and out of their skies. Total Isolation.

I'm not an interventionist in the slightest (I can't stand that we've had troops there for as long as we have), however, that said, South Korea can't simply play 'See No Evil, Hear No Evil'.

The first fallout from doing nothing would be that the North would feel emboldened to harass the South further, incurring more deaths.

The second piece of fallout would a loss of faith in the South Korean governments ability to protect its' citizens.

We (The U.S.) should not be involved, but the South Koreans need to kick someones ass. It's the only way to deal with a bully.

The US is and would be involved in any conflict with the North. We are allied to the South Koreans and technically remain in a state of war with NK. To think the US can stay out of this is naive.

Madness on the cusp of desperation. They are having a hard time kicking off a war with Iran since Iran went ahead with the Brazil and Turkey agreement so now they need a new distraction from the BP disaster and the on going Afghan disaster, not to mention the economic recovery that isn't.
02:04 PM on 05/21/2010
Any ideas what exactly can be done further to North Korea? Short of invasion (and I doubt whether too many people are all that gung-ho about that possibility), just about all the options have been tried.

A while ago I commented on the cannon firing from N. Korea as being part of border game playing. I called it playing chicken. For those of you who do not know: Playing chicken was when two cars raced head long at one another and the first one to try to asvoid a collission was the chicken. With 25000 US troops there in S. Korea, this game, now involving the sinkling of a large S. Korean war ship) has become very high stakes for America... A lot of questions remain. Like.. who built the ship, who designed it, who provided the hardware and software, and who sold it to the S. Koreans. Then there is another. Who failed to tell the S. Koreans to keep away from the disputer border or... Who told them to play chicken with that ship. Was it US or THEM
02:03 PM on 05/21/2010
The US should get their troops out of South Korea and let their country reunite. That is the real problem. The US loves to occupy other people's countries.

It is pretty Hillarious that North Korea now has more credibility than Hillary Clinton and the Obama Administration. The US used to be a Super Power, now it is a Super Joke.
