i looked at this and i felt so angry i wanted to grab that guy and beat the Shite out of him. notice that no women were in the audience?
I'm sorry, but the customs of this country are barbaric in the extreme and no amout of telling me to respect other cultures will make me change my mind. I cannot respect a culture that abuses women and girls this way.
if you want to get rid of girls and women past their breeding capability, then use selective abortion. don't keep abusing them when they are already here.

why do we waste our time, money and lives on people that even reject toilet paper?

Because if we givem enough money and prosperity they will like us !

What strikes me in this video is the strength if this girl. She stands there almost unflinching, which I think is infuriating to that monster who calls himself a man. I too come from a developing country so I am sensitive to culture. But there is a difference between culture and simple cruelty. I pray for this beautiful little girl that one day she rises up from the oppressive community in which she lives and discovers how big the world is and how great life can be. To all oppressed women and children around the world, dream, pray, and never loose hope to be free from your enemies.

It's simply Sharia law. There are worse examples which no one wants to talk about or expose. Soon we will see more pressure to apply the same law in developed countries - like the USA.

Really? So, 300+ million Americans are just going to sit by meekly while a tiny minority in this country magically makes the Constitution disappear and impose Sharia law on the rest of us?

How is that going to happen?
02:53 PM on 06/01/2010
The law is not the problem.. It is the interpretation of the laws.

You do realize there are Islamic countries where women wear jeans and such- right? Where things like this wouldn't happen out in the open.

And not for nothing, forced child marriages have been known to happen here in the US with Christian religions. It happens in Judaism, it happens in Hinduism... It's the mindset of the people who do these kinds of things, not the faith itself, that's the problem.

No matter the faith, no matter the country forcing women to marry at all is barbaric. There are cases where the family is so broke they can't afford the mouths to feed, and they just don't have the education to know about family planning/birth control has been vilified to them. In those cases, it's just as barbaric, but the best way to fight it is to address the financial situations of the area in addition to international pressure to cease what is seen most other places as highly illegal and immoral activities.

The places that will be harder are the places where women are seen as property. How they're seen to be subservient to men, and that their only place and drive in life should be to follow every order given to her and to pop out children. Where that alone is the driving force behind it. Men are in charge there, and why would the majority wish to give up the guaranteed servants they feel entitled to have?

But, even in those areas, you will find parents wanting their daughters to be happy in their marriages, parents who wouldn't hit their children, and husbands who wouldn't hit their wives. Few and far between in certain areas? Yes. But, they are there. Even in situations like that, it is possible to find decent people.

Afghanistan is under huge stress and somewhat abnormal as a result. A study found that domestic abuse was a given in 90% of the households there. 90%!

Duller. He was pointing out that Bush wasted a lot of time and money there without accomplishing anything. But then you have to be able to understand what you read in order to understand that, so it's understandable that half a semester in junior college failed to prepare you to do so.

Mmmmmm... Child brides.... (Cue outraged responses...)

On a serious note, I watched the video and I was outraged. The brutish Taliban guy beat her with a belt as if she were a stubborn mule whom he was trying to work until it falls over of exhaustion. As far as I'm concerned, those men are swine.

Two things come to mind - one is that we cannot allow our national security objectives to get wrapped around the petty cruelty of such men. We will win this struggle, as history is on our side.

Having said that, we cannot have a campaign which begins with national security almost ten years ago and then morphs into a new carte blanche campaign, to prevent the mistreatment of girls in central Asia. That's a very big job, to police the behavior of all the men in Central Asia.

If that became the goal, our military objectives can be disoriented any time one of these brutes takes his belt off to punish a girl. Actually, even those men who are not brutes might try this as a propaganda technique, just to disorient our military and distract from our objectives.

This is why I say that in spite of my outrage at this, the primary goal must remain American national security, and this cause must not be put ahead, nor to be allowed to distract from that primary goal.

If you read the article, the fine folks doing the flogging weren't the Taliban.

"Their tormentors, who videotaped the abuse, were not the Taliban, but local mullahs and the former warlord, now a pro-government figure who largely rules the district where the girls live."

Regarding our national security, I concur. We should stop messing around. That has been tried several times all ending in failure. We should either get the heck out of there or just turn the entire area into a parking lot.

So President Karzai is convening a Peace Jurga tomorrow in Kabul in an attempt to find an end to the conflict.

And HuffPost chooses not to even run the story.

Nice way to fit the news to their preconceived narrative.

Because, from what I have read, the Peace Jirga is mostly meaningless posturing.

On the other hand, the fact that a child running away from an illegal marriage is still punishable by flogging is reality

How easy it is for you to ignore a child's plea.
01:02 PM on 06/01/2010
Who is ignoring a child's plea?

Do you think a Peace Jurga is NOT NEWS?

And what gives you the ability to tell the future and determine it is meaningless posturing?

What do you propose as a solution to the Afghan war?
10:47 AM on 06/01/2010
I would love to rip that flog from his hands and use it on him! That being said, Mr. Obama and Congress, GET US OUT OF THERE!!!!!
