From the always witty KungFu Monkey, comes my quote of the day:

There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.

Sometimes I just can't take this place, as much as I enjoy so many fun witty posters. The rush, hannity, levin, and savage mentality on here gets to be too much to tolerate at times. I'm glad it's Summer and I'm spending more time in the great outdoors. My new part-time job will be great as well Spending several evenings working for a non-profit outdoor concert venue and getting to listen to Sting, Sheryl Crow, Earth Wind & Fire, the Chicago Symphony, and lots more. FYI tr0lls, you've not changed my mind, and if you are paid to post here, your employer has not changed my mind. I have my beliefs, I'm not slinking away, but there is still a life out there, I live in a beautiful part of the country, and I'm going to appreciate what I've got, and those in my life.

Humpty Dumpty Theater! Top Hat, Top Kill, Junk Shot, Cap and Cut, etc, etc, etc. I can’t wait for the name of the next “operation”. Nothing will fix it now except for the relief well. BP knows this and the government knows this. Really, everybody knows (or should know) this. But BP and the government can’t speak the truth because then it would look like they are doing nothing while they are waiting for the relief well to be drilled. This truth wouldn’t spin well.

Here's the truth: All the king’s horses and all the king’s men can’t put the Deepwater Horizon back together again. We are going to have to wait for the relief well and guess what? Projections of August for the relief well completion are VERY rosy. The last big leak in the Gulf like this one (Ixtoc I rig in 1979) required 10 months for the relief well to be cut and the well capped. The technology has absolutely not changed in the slightest, except that Ixtoc I was in 200 feet of water and Deepwater Horizon was in over 5,000 feet of water. They tried all the same shortcuts in 1979 with zero success. History will repeat itself and screaming about it won’t change anything.

Here is the list of Egregious and Willful Safety Violations by Oil Companies in the last 3 years:
BP: 760, Sunoco: 8, Conoco-Phillips: 8, Citgo: 2, Exxon: 1

Get the trend?

"Humpty Dumpty Theater! Top Hat, Top Kill, Junk Shot, Cap and Cut... I can’t wait for the name of the next..."

up next: the 'Crap Shoot', after that, the 'BOP Cap'... maybe a bomb??

basically, the SpillCam will be keeping us entertained... till about christmas time... when BP might have relief wells dug - OR - after the oil reservoir has stopped belching its guts into the Gulf, which should only take another couple decades or so, give or take a generation.

Does Bobby Jindal have any thoughts on how BP can fix the problem in LA. A good corporate company freemarket, wheeling BP. Or is he calling for the government to take it over--socialist BP.

Seems a Governor as well as the feds (MMS) should know the capability of a company conducting extractions in the states...He should be held accountable as well. How much did he know about BPs violations and continue to allow them to drill.

Seems a lot of people don't want to take responsibility.

The lease was sold by Mineral Management Services to BP on July 31st, 2008.

Once the lease is approved and sold, the oil company has the right to drill.

The lease was part of a 5 year program passed by the Bush administration mandating more drilling in the Gulf. Bush's law required that these lease be sold.

Bush's law (GOMESA,) also removed all environmental restrictions. It specifically exempted this well from Environmental Impact Studies (EIS) that are normally required under "Section 18" of the "Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act," (OCSLA.)

Unless the law is changed, there is nothing anyone can do to stop the drilling.
