Hmmm. No significant difference between age groups with respect to irresponsible driving habits.

Are the "texters" only discovered after they run into a post?

... the problem is not their running into a post. The problem is that they run into babies, children and other people who just happen to be lawfully and innocently in the car next to them, or on foot waiting to cross at the light they are too busy texting to see.... negligent/distracted drivers are a danger to OTHERS first and foremost. I can't speak to the value of their own lives when they dismiss as worthless the lives of others.

People just don't realize how **little** it takes to make that day - that moment - the one that changes or ends their life or someone else's like the little 8 month old in the car on the same highway. How do people NOT think about the others around them when they're in control of a 2,000+ metal projectile?

There is a technical solution to this problem. GPS can identify that a cellphone is on a road or route; its then a question of automatically disabling text if it detects you are on a road and moving. Exit the GPS coordinate and its enabled again.

That doesn't work. How does it know you're not in the back seat, or a passenger on bus? Or pulled over to the side of the road?

Nothing shocking about this report . .. . pointing out the obvious . . . . what is seen everyday when out driving. Adults acting with less sense than teenagers.

I honestly think anyone who admits doing this should be ashamed of themselves.
It's not funny - or cute - or something you should smile about as you meekly admit doing it.
NOTHING is so important that you can't wait till you park.
Please - everyone - THINK.

I don't know how you enforce it, but it's definately a traffic safety hazard and many people have lost their lives because of it. I see people on their phones constantly and they're totally oblivious to their surroundings drifting in and out of lanes of traffic and in some cases crossing the medians. I firmly believe that this is the source of many head on collisions as well. There has to be a way to stop it or more and more people are going to die.

Raise your hand if you do it! I know I do, and here in CA it's illegal

Just saw your post where you reveal the "trick" to texting while driving.
You're an idiot.
You have a responsibility when you're driving.
And it's not funny.

wow...

Do me a favor - do NOT raise your hand while you're cheerfully and illegally texting away while driving, m'kay? I wish there was some way to have you see... EVERY time you are doing this... to consider that you are choosing your irrelevant text message as more important than the lives of _every_ _single_ _person on/near the road with you (including babies, pets, children, pedestrians... and so on).

I hope and pray you never have to feel what it's like to not only be in a life-changing crash (be it your life - or worse - someone else's) but to be responsible for permanent injury or death because you were texting to someone what color straw you had in your milkshake.

I guess a lot of people really cannot understand how instantaneous - and finite - a car accident is... and how little it takes for one driver's recklessness to forever change - or end - the lives of complete strangers, or your kids, or lastly, oneself... there is no "delete" there is no "edit"...

Please wake up and at least consider the lives of the kids in the cars around you if you can't bother to provide basic safety for yourself.

The other drivers on the road ARE more important than anything you are texting or saying. I promise...

Why the kids, specifically?

A couple of months ago, I saw a woman in a SUV pull an illegal U-turn while on her cell-phone.

There was one vehicle between her's and mine.

It was a local police cruiser.

*Easy* pickings for that officer. I swear, the lights on the cruiser came on in a joyous manner, and the wheels just sang as that officer turned around to pull her over.

Using cell phones while driving isn't stupid - but it makes you stupid. Ignorance can be fixed - Stupid is Forever.

How in the he!! is it that you can get pulled over and fined heavily for not wearing a seat belt and yet texting or talking on the phone gets a pass ?

To me this isn't even in the same ballpark as the seat belt issue (unless one is truly free of any responsibility to others, like children or family members. Even something so basic as not wanting to cause someone else pain as a result of your "freedom" and recklessness seems to be an awfully selfish choice, regardless of responsibility).

But not wearing a seat belt does not - ACTIVELY - risk the lives of those around you (whether your kids in the back or an infant in the mini-van in the next lane or the person waiting to cross at the light), but texting/etc. DOES put all those peoples lives at risk because the person texting is actively involved in a behavior that endangers their lives directly.

When I see people *deliberately* being reckless when driving (texting, calling, tailgating, speeding way out of bounds of current traffic or collective speed of other drivers) I simply can't believe that people ...do...not...get... that they are letting all those drivers, passengers, pedestrians around them that they care LESS about their lives than they do about the text they're sending or the plane they want to catch (but won't DIE if they miss...). ugh.

I have this friend who is as smart as they come in a lot of areas but when it comes to driving he's as dumb as a box of rocks. The man was a college professor at one time so you'd expect a little more. His texting, checking stocks, checking email amongst other things are common for him when he's behind the wheel. More than once in some not so nice words I told him to either pull over or put the dam thing away.
04:43 PM on 06/19/2010
People should get 10 years in prison for effing doing that. Even if nothing happened – this time.
05:32 PM on 06/19/2010
Agreed.
The penalty must be severe or the inconsiderate, irresponsible, stupid idiots among us will keep doing it.
Their cars should be impounded.

I'm amazed there are people out there that think they can text safely while driving. I can spot 300' away all the people on their cell phones. They are so obviously so out of touch with what is going around them. They weave all over the place while going much slower than the traffic around them. They make these abrupt movements every fifteen seconds or so when they register they are about to go off the road. It is so dangerous for pedestrians and bicyclists to have these clowns on the road. The evidence shows they are worse than drunk drivers. Somehow each of them thinks everything is okay, but nearly every day I have to honk my horn as at some idiot who is swerving into my lane. It often takes 5 seconds for them to wake up and pull back in their lane. Please, pull over you are going to kill someone!

America's roads are probably the most dangerous in the world, If youre driving in Germany You better watch what youre doing, They dont care if you drive or not and have no problem yanking you lisence permanitly. Here we just slap people on the wrist, how many people has texting killed.I feel that if youre caught texting its bye bye driving lisence . and a huge fine.

I was cycling in a bike lane and a car was traveling next to me, same speed. It was a pregnant women, head down texting...she never even saw me, so, I "politely" smacked her car to get her attention because I knew she had no idea I was there...she barely looked up...I smacked it again and yelled "we're in a schoooool zoooone"...she acted annoyed as if she really didn't care one way or another...she was texting! She didn't seem to mind that she was very close to me, and not only was endangering 3 live, but children on the side of the road...can you imagine the lifestyle of the new baby?
