As a much older disabled person, I sympathize with the plight young people find themselves in.
I admire your optimism, but I fear that your elders never let you know about how cutthroat this society is. They preferred to feed you bullshit about how great this country and the capitalist system is. What really steams me is the prevalence of unpaid full time "internships". I thought slavery was illegal. The Reagan Revolution continues.
12:42 AM on 07/22/2010
Unpaid internships are such crap. I can't believe they're legal.

I bet Loren doesn't stay unemployed long if she moves to LA.

Mr. President

People are hurting ...people are STILL losing their jobs and people are losing hope.

BUT...

You are STILL trying to do your best. You are STILL leading and still trying to work with a party that only holds Americans in contempt! ...(Republicans do NOT even respect their own money backers, they think to be either dumb or naive or what was the phrase ..EGO DRIVEN ..right.)

Mr. President , you continued the bailouts started by your predecessor , Bu.sh . You helped bail out the bankers with the proviso that they would in turn lend to smaller banks ..and in turn again would pass on capital to main street.

YOU, Mr. President have staved off one of the worst economic downturns since the great depression.
YOU Mr. President have helped millions of people either keep their jobs or get back to work.

The Job is not done , but those same BANKERS are holding back the money and continuing the trading that started the whole mess in the first place. ANY path to true reform is being thwarted by these money men with their lobbyisists and BIg Businees interests that do NOT care about the American worker.

THEY JUST WANT YOU TO FAIL (.) period ..and WILL DO ANYTHING TO SUBVERT YOU SIR.

at the expense of the american worker .

Come November the republic and TRUE democracy wil be handed back to the people.

"Joelle Andrews" was the only one on clicked on because it peaked my interest. Being in academia, which I was too, I can understand, somewhat, that she would feel the world is STILL her oyster, but come on. Didn't she listen to any of the news and where the economy was headed in 2008 that she thought she could pursue a new direction for her career? Hello!

Welcome all to the first step to becoming a Conservative... leaving the University system and discovering you have to work for a living. Careful, in another 20 years you'll be voting Republican.

Wrong. Those of us who have always thought and analyzed realize that conservatism, as practiced today, is not the answer but the cause of the problem.

Every one of us who went to college, and beyond, knew we did so to further our lives, and most of us for employment. And we stayed liberal. Some of us true liberals, not today's latte liberals.

Conservatism is at best a ca ncer, devouring America, unconcerned as to the fact it is destroying the host on which it lives.

I'm taking great pleasuring in your username. Keep up the good fight comrade.

you don't need college to "further one's life" If you are going to spend 150 to 200 grand, one ought to learn a REAL knowledge, such as Math, Science, Accounting, Nursing. History can be learned on the side by reading history books.

HuffPo, how about a slide show of ALL unemployed people. Young and older, degreed, and non-degreed. I had 28 years with my company, I'm 55 years old.
10:23 PM on 07/28/2010
that would be one long slideshow.

Quote: "While I have experienced disappointments, I am still highly optimistic that I will find work. I know that it takes persistence and dedication on my part, and I am continuing to search for positions that I believe would best complement me as a person."

I truly feel for people looking for work in today's environment, but I have often wondered how many people search for work outside of whatever their degree is in? While having a job that "compliments" one as a person is certainly what one should be working toward, I think that's secondary to simply having a job.

I'd like to make it clear I'm not trying to accuse anyone of anything -- I simply haven't seen much reporting that dives into what kinds of jobs people are looking for.

Liberal arts graduates have always been unemployed, except in the fast food industry working for a high school graduate, or a high school drop-out!

Unless their families own a business that can give them a job, they have nothing to offer any other business!

But they can do well at trivial pursuit.

Thank you... for saying what these 'guidance counselors' and University shills won't. College used to be about honing a skill and at the same time fostering thought... now it's about neither.

Wrong. College used to be about discovering the world, and how to think and analyze. Now it's just a giant trade school organization, churning out little robots to work in the man's factories.

Of course, there are conservative "universities", where real open thought and analysis seems to be banned. But following some fringe philosophy based on how they wish the world really is and was is pushed heavily.

Keep trying, Isha. I live in D.C. area as well and it took me nearly 11 months to find my first full time, real job after I graduated in Fall of 2007. While there may not be hundreds of jobs out there related to your degree, there are plenty of jobs out there. While I'm employed full time, I still get e-mails time to time from various employers searching for resumes on Career Builder. Definitely don't give up.

My daughter graduated from a prestigious liberal arts college this past June, with a degree in literature and philosophy. She is a talented writer.

The only job she could find was at a local hardware store.

".......degree in literature and philosophy."

listen, I am not trying to attack your daughter, but what do expect with a degree like that? what marketable skills does a degree like that really offer? and why in gods name would you as a parent let her get such a degree? if she really wanted to go that route at least talk her into a teaching degree.

College professor jobs teach philosophy and literature can be taught at any level of education...so yes, her degree is marketable.
11:35 AM on 07/21/2010
Philosophy teaches us to think critically, to reason through logic and to behave ethically- why do consider those to be not marketable? One of the largest complaints hiring managers have today is lack of critical and logical reasoning directly related strategic thinking and complex problem-solving. Perhaps you should consider revisiting the value of philosophy as a practical course of study??

She couldn't even handle one full term as governor of ALASKA! Sorry to tell you this but she has no interested in have a "job" and thus no interest in running for any office again. She'd rather get carted around the country in luxury amenities to shill to the ignorant population in this country. She gives speeches to thousands of the very people who are most effected by the Bush/Cheney recession yet have no idea. The sad part is, while her audience goes home to no job or an underpaid job and notices of foreclosure, Palin jumps onto private jets drinking top shelf champagne, wearing $20k suits thinking to herself "Golly, I can't believe those idiots just paid me $500k to speak aimlessly into a microphone for 30 minutes."

You better recognize, Sarah Palin sees you as beneath her just as she sees honest thought provoking work beneath her. Accept that and you're on your first step to realizing that the people who call themselves Republicans(and I could throw a few Dems in there as well) are really just corporatist Banksters who would be content with driving by your family living in a box under some bridge on a cold rainy day and not think it worthy to even look in your general direction. But don't worry, you can just put on your "hanging tea bag hat" and hold your "Obama = Nazi" sign over your kids heads and tell them "wow, I used to think they cared"

There are no jobs out there. All these people are going to be very upset they have all this college debt and no chance of being employed.
11:12 AM on 07/21/2010
Yes, there are no jobs (unless you want to join the military, or law enforcement type jobs)....but, I think the moral of the story here is simply...

Experience, common sense, real-world knowledge > degree, book smarts
