I keep seeing the issue of the Gulf politicized on this website -- Democrats good and Republicans bad. This is nonsense. Certainly, the Republican record on this issue is deplorable. But, the Democrats are barely better. Just over a week before the BP disaster, the President approved offshore drilling off the Eastern US. When the disaster occurred, the President said nothing for nine days. It took him literally weeks to visit the site of the disaster, and then only for a few hours to "fly over." After initially approving the toxic disbursant that has filled the Gulf with poisons over and above the leaked oil, the President "ordered" BP to stop using it. They never did, and the President said/nothing else! Toward the end of the leak, we saw all sorts of activities to cleanse the spill from the water -- things that could have been undertaken in week one of the spill. But, it was week 17 before most got underway because of White House inaction or actual opposition. It took the President two full months to even meet face to face with the company representatives involved in the worst ecological disaster in our history. We need to stop yelling about politics and the tea party and do something to ensure that our elected officials -- including the Democrats -- do something other than what looks good for them on tv!

You are lying AGAIN. "The president said nothing for nine days"? do you think this is Faux Noise, that you can get away with saying that??
The morning after the explosion, Obama issued a statement that he'd ordered the Coast Guard to the Gulf to assist in search and rescue and sent the Deputy Secretary of Interior to the Gulf, with orders to provide HOURLY reports to the White House, followed rapidly by announcements of the cancellation of three separate scheduled meeting that would have required leaving the country.
On April 28th, Obama visited the Gulf - eight days, not "literally weeks". The news footage of him walking on the beach in Louisiana, were not from a "fly over" (that was Bush, in response to Katrina, on the way back from the vacation he didn't interrupt).

When Obama issued an executive order lifting the liability on BP to 20 BILLION, Repubs *Apologized* to BP for the "shakedown".

The Corexit situation has remained problematical, since it's approved by out own EPA - something that certainly didn't happen on Obama's watch.
Not true that Obama "said nothing else", after BP claimed there was no other dispersant that met their criteria, and claimed the right to use a substance approved by our own EPA, which has continued to look into legal ways to stop them.

"Took Obama two full months to meet face to face with BP representatives"? I don't have the facts on that, but considering your other lies ...

Thank you, kenhamlett.

This is what I have been saying.

WE are playing into the hands of the powers-that-be by fighting amongst ourselves.

That is what THEY want.

And "THEY" are the top 1% of this country that are sociopaths and WILL destroy anyone and anything in their path to retain POWER and WEALTH.

The bickering over RED and BLUE and LEFT and RIGHT is precisely what those in power want the MASSES to do thereby deterring us from COMING TOGETHER and paying attention to what THEY are doing to us, our health, our homes, our jobs, the environment and wildlife.

I am a Liberal and I refuse to defend or protect ANYONE who is doing harm to people and/or animals.

Here is Nalco's MSDS sheet for the COREXIT dispersants and a portion of the effects:

http://www.deepwaterhorizonresponse.com/posted/2931/Corexit_EC9527A_MSDS.539295.pdf

Our hazard evaluation has identified the following chemical substance(s) as HAZARDOUS:

2-Butoxyethanol 111-76-2 30.0 - 60.0
Organic sulfonic acid salt Proprietary 10.0 - 30.0
Propylene Glycol 57-55-6 1.0 - 5.0
WARNING

Eye and skin irritant. Repeated or excessive exposure to butoxyethanol may cause injury to red blood cells (hemolysis), kidney or the liver.

HARMFUL BY INHALATION, in contact with skin and if swallowed.

Do not get in eyes, on skin, on clothing. . Keep away from heat. Keep away from sources of ignition - No smoking.

ENVIRONMENTAL PRECAUTIONS :

DO NOT CONTAMINATE SURFACE WATER.

Billy Nungesser has been a rare courageous voice for the people and wildlife, speaking with Anderson Cooper on CNN.

"A hundred days later, I can't look you in the eye and tell you who's in charge," he said. "I would not want to go to war with this team.

Looking back, it's very sad that a lot of marshes and wildlife could have been saved if the federal government and BP had just listened to local people."

This NEVER should have happened.

I am a Liberal and I don't give a damn if the people in charge are with the blue team or the red team or on the left or on the right.

This administration WILLFULLY and KNOWINGLY permitted BP, a known serial-violator, "egregious and willful" per OSHA to operate the Deepwater Horizon.

Obama rubber-stamped the permit after assigning Salazar ONE AND ONE HALF YEARS AGO to "REFORM" the MMS.

Why is BP STILL operating Atlantis, despite a whistleblower testifying 90% of the blueprints vital in any emergency situation are MISSING???

Why has Obama NOT fulfilled his campaign promise to END ALL OFFSHORE DRILLING????

The ANSWER, my friends, "is blowing in the wind" and it sure smells like OIL and DISPERSANTS.

The ANSWER is POWER, PRESTIGE, WEALTH for the top 1% of this country who are sociopaths and will stop at nothing to retain their wealth at the expense of people's lives, livelihoods, the environment and wildlife.

Why should I vote Democrat in NOVEMBER 2010??????

Because the Republicans are the ones who installed all of the cronies in MMS and every other agency in the government. Because the Republicans are anti-regulation. Because the Bush Administration allowed all of these rigs to operate with no oversight for 8 years.

I blame Obama too but if you think the Republicans are going to do any better....you're delusional. They will go back to business as usual re-creating the conditions for more disasters. And they will not hold anyone accountable. At least the Obama Admin has launched a criminal probe into this mess, fired the head of MMS, and reinstituted the moratorium on off-shore drilling. No Republican would do that.

Fanned, clevelandchick. The Obama administration's response has been far from perfect, but for contrast, you only need to remember that when Obama, by executive order, raised the liability cap on BP from millions to 20 BILLION, Republicans were *apologizing* to BP for the "shakedown".

Bush's MMS has been not only reformed but disbanded, broken into two different sections at Interior, to keep the regulators out of bed (literally) with Big Oil.

The difference, and the choice, is clear.

So you are not going to vote? Or you will vote for someone who has NO chance of winning?

Face it, no person is perfect and no party is perfect. Are you willing to run the risk of another Bush in the White House? 2 wars, massive deficit, tor.ture, deregulation, etc., etc., etc.

High stakes to be sure ...

There are 14,000 wells in the gulf that are abandoned, and none of them have been checked in ten years - all waiting like time bombs.
Bps biggest safety risk, Atlantis is still out there, still working in 7,000 feet of water.
Bp just posted over 6 Billion dollars in profit for the quarter.
The American Military is still sucking up Gulf Oil for their idiot wars of fear.
Out of sight, out of mind, the media will go back to Lindsay Lohen and Racist vs "No" Racist. All of this will be like Katrina and the people of the Gulf will get stuck, while we all line up at the pump.
America is numb to America.

Consider this: The US spends roughly $1T a year on its Military, that is a lot of dough, the US Military is THE LARGEST single consumer of Petroleum Fuels and other products.

So, if WE THE PEOPLE cut our Military spending IN HALF we will still have the largest Military spend in the world but we will be SAVING $500B a YEAR.

But if we also cut our Military operations in HALF the Price of Crude will DROP globally, prices of just about everything WILL DROP, Gasoline could easily DROP to less than $1 DOLLAR.

These actions alone, would revitalize the US Economy and provide HUNDREDS of BILLIONS of dollars for ALTERNATIVE ENERGY research and INFRASTRUCTURE.

The TEA BAGGERS represent US Corporate interests, not those of the AMERICAN PEOPLE.
02:20 PM on 07/28/2010
Here we are, powercosmic, with a DEM majority in the Senate, the House and the White House.

You can add the DEMOCRAT PARTY to the list "representing US Corporate interests, not those of the AMERICAN PEOPLE".

Where is the CHANGE we were promised????

Where is the END to WAR (33 billion signed off by the President today)????

I don't think it's about parties any more, the same men are behind the curtain pulling the strings.

It's just a new puppet out there for the masses to THINK there was a change.

VeganSue, the Corporate Interests have been diligent at work since the 1970's installing the GOP policies to further their control.

They are very powerful YES, but they are not invincible, they do still thankfully require the acquiescence of the American People to further their grip. Their position was weakened in the 2008 election, that was a single battle we won, not the whole war.

What took them decades to create will not be undone overnight, but we cannot give up, keep pressing the issue. Obama isn't alone as long as we hang in there.

Change on such a scale takes time. It took seven years to create the crisis we're in. We are in the exact same situation as we were in the Great Depression, caused by the same conditions and everybody wants a quick solution. The Great Depression lasted 12 years. There was no easy solution in the 1930s and there is no easy solution now. The American people have grown complacent and lazy and are easily distracted. The choice about which party to vote for should be clear, to those who are capable of analyzing it. Do you vote for the party who created the stock market crashes and financial crises of 1929, 1987 and 2008 or do you vote for the party who is usually left to clean up the mess?
01:36 PM on 07/28/2010
Now that they've curtailed or banned fishing and shrimping in the Gulf, those stocks should be coming back nicely.
