All politicians lie

How dare these e vil people come up with ideas that made them wealthy!!!
10:53 AM on 07/29/2010
Maybe.. but at this point, they're just mass-producing junk with harmful chemicals and unnatural, genetically-modified ingredients, without regard to the effect on the consumer or the value of small, local business.

I love reading these kind of stories, I found each story so inspiring! It was not lost on me however that all of the people on the list were White men. I think that's kind-of a shame.

The rich pay a million times more taxes per capita than the poor and middle class. The rich pay for the schools, the hospitals, the roads, the police, the firemen. Not only are they brilliant enough to live at the highest standard of living, but they provide all the services for everyone else and create all the jobs. A typical billionaire does more good in a week than Jesus Christ and Mother Teresa did in their life times.
09:00 AM on 07/29/2010
Tell us about the many thousands that have secret illegal tax shelters or how Warren Buffet pays less a % of his income in taxes than his lowest paid secretary?

And those rich folks are not getting in to the kingdom of heaven either
09:09 AM on 07/29/2010
Percentages mean nothing. 100% of zero is still zero, but only 10% of a billion is a hundred million. In real money, Buffet pays more taxes in a year than his secretary would pay if she lived to be a 1000. As for illegal tax shelters, how many poor and middle class people make money by working under the table which is not taxed or drug dealing and prostitution which is also not taxed? And no one is getting in to the kingdom of heaven not even Jesus Christ. There is no heaven; when we die, we all rot, unless someone is nice enough to cremate us.

Every report I have ever seen show that the rich in America pay a percentage of taxes very close to the amount of the wealth they control. In simple term, yes the "rich" may pay 90% of the taxes, but they also have 90% of the money.

That's why the middle class is shrinking. The middle class has to carry all demands of all society. If the wealthy put back in to the system percentage wise of their income what the average middle class has to just think how much better our two countries would be. (I'm Canadian, but my sister and relatives live in the States.)

David Murdock bought Cannon Mills for a song. The real estate that belonged to the company was worth more than than the cotton mills. The mills were sold and then eventually closed putting thousands out of work but Murdock is very wealthy. He razed plant #1 and is building the North Carolina Research Campus. Several universities have facilities there.

The point of the story is not that these people are rich rich rich or that they're not surprisingly all white men, it's that you've never heard of them. That would be true of most billionaire/millionaires. But then they've never heard of me either. What would be interesting to know about these men, and this article doesn't cover it, is how they've treated their employees and their communities where they operate. Have they and do they pay their employees a living wage? Do they see to it that they have had comprehensive health care? Have they helped their employees save and plan for retirement? Have they given them a safe work environment? Are their hiring and promotion practices fair and unbiased? None of those questions are answered by this article. They aren't asked because the point is that you've never heard of them.

I'm not resentful or jealous of the success of other people. What angers me is when they use their success to mistreat and exploit others for even more gain, or use their status and power as a drag on human advancement and personal liberties. There are probably just as many Democrats as there are Republicans on this list. Political party affiliation of the owners and founders is not necessarily and indicator of what kind of corporate citizen these companies are.

Perhaps in the USA but not in Europe. In fact, here in NL there are many millionaires and they are in a very high tax bracket.

That is why we have a modern up to date country and continually spend billions updating infrastructure etc.

They stilll care about their country and the common people.

Nicely said. However you're on the wrong site if you think most people here really care about what you asked. This place is mainly for those with deep insecurities to name call others to feel better about themselves. Perhaps when this place first started you would have received posts discussing the matter, no longer.

I've noticed that the quality of the comments on HP have continually grown less and less about airing and discussing issues in any robust, reasonable manner and more and more about merely making smart-aleck responses some of which I've enjoyed, if they're witty enough. I'll admit to having indulged in it a few times myself. In my defense, only against those whose aim is to post obvious partisan statements that violate the facts. In most of my responses I try to make a reasonable argument or statement grounded in the facts as I know them, drawing on my knowledge, life experience and research skills. I can type, which makes it easier for me to round out my comments. I'm convinced that the comments that are often the fullest and best articulated are most often from people who can touch type.

There are a few who post here whose responses are genuinely impressive. The amount of thoughtfulness, expressive ability and fairness can be captivating and engaging. They always sound like people I'd like to know, even if I don't agree with their comment.

18 mega-wealthy U.S. families bankrolled an attempt to overturn the Estate Tax -- remember, inheritance was warned against by Jefferson as a dangerous concentration of power in the hands of just a few families.

There should be zero inheritance tax. If I earned it, I should be able to do whatever I want with it.

yep

the rothschild family for example a few generations ago started living less visible lives. they realized that their extreme wealth would make people jealous and them a target

they are by far the wealthiest bunch of people on the planet. no one else even comes close. they are so wealthy that no one can even estimate their wealth anymore. their joint wealth dwarfs all the people on forbes list

so where are they now? what are they up to besides sending one country into war with another for profit?

the fact that they aren't covered by the news media is actually more scary
