Wording and message are everything. If the message is that Obama is raising taxes, people get mad. This is just another example of failure to control the message by the democrats and Obama. What Obama is doing is lowering taxes for everyone but the top 2%. In the first line of the article it states he is 'raising taxes' he will take no action to raise taxes. If i have a mortgage where I am paying interest only for the first five years then it goes up is my mortgage company raising my rate? No. They are doing what we had agreed to, yes my payment goes up but it is not something they just decided to do, I knew full well what was coming. So Obama is not raising taxes. Those tax breaks were designed by the last administration to expire! Obama is proposing NEW tax breaks for those who make less than 250K.

But the Repubs will fight him on this since they do on everything. Even though they claim to be concerned about our deficits. These tax breaks were never paid for, and maintaining them will worsen our deficits. But then again, I don't believe the repubs are really concerned with deficits, unless they can use it for political gain.

Because as Cheney said "Reagan proved deficits don't matter"

No if we could only get rid of these DINO's...

It is hilarious how everything under Bush's term was Bush's fault even in the last 2 years with Dems owning congress, but a paltry, powerless minority of Repubs in this admin/congress have somehow brought the majority to its knees...proven by the fact that every failure is blamed on them

If there were indeed majority rule, the Republicans would have been stopped in their tracks. Unfortunately 51 is no longer a majority in the Senate. This has enabled the party that lost to be petulant and selfish little children who have made every effort to see that the unhilarious Bush era problems would persist.

Great post. It's bizarre that the White House does not understand spin, which in this case, is simply pointing out the TRUTH. They couldn't sell a washrag to a janitor. And here I'm just talking about convincing all but 1 or 2% of the frigging public that this is a GOOD thing. But that they aren't round up the votes on this one is a completely different issue.

This is such a common-sense issue that if our Democrats in Congress cannot get it together to lock-step vote (hmm, a practice the other party seems to have nailed), we will go down in history as a party of spineless morons.

My joke on Obama used to be that I'd love to rip those Lincoln bios out of his hands and make him read about LBJ's tactics instead. There was a guy that got things done. There was a guy who could actually round up Congress and get his stuff through. I guess it was never much of a joke.

If the dems want to sweep the midterms all they need to do is pass a tax cut on every dollar under 250,000.00. Portray that as a tax cut for all (which it is, after all even the rich get a cut on thier first 250,000.00).

THen force the republicans to stand up every day and say - not unless you give even bigger tax breaks to the wealthy. Call for cloture every day, until the election - do not recess the Senate. DO not go home to campaign.

Do the work of the people and force the repuiblicans to stand in your way - then hammer them with it in your ads.

You can sweep the midterms!

No, Dems can't win at this point. It's no longer just about tax cuts. It's an idealogical problem.
It's about spending, entitlements and tyranny. It's about passing legislation against the will of the voters and calling us ignorant while you're doing it. It's about freedom and the American dream.

It is an ideological problem, and when Obama frames it in a way that makes republicans look like they are fighting a middle class tax cut, they will only be so much roadkill waiting for the guy with the shovel to scrape them off the political landscape.
01:04 PM on 09/15/2010
After all the demonizing of Bush for the last 3 years, all they can do is write a bill extending the middle class tax cuts, keep the tax for the rich, calling it a Jobs Bill and the Obama Tax Cuts from this day forward. The Dems who are complaining are only doing it to be on the record during their campaigns. After the elections, they'll cave, as usual.

the question is, how many of them?

If House Democrats can afford to sacrifice them, they should do so for the sake of the deficit.

Who can argue with that? Even the blue dogs, presumably, can't argue with that... right blue dogs?

This issue is the litmus test for every real anti-tax deficit hawk. Do we reduce the deficit AND make permanent the tax break for every American for which both parties can agree?

If you say no, you're not an anti-tax deficit hawk. You're a partisan obstructionist shilling for a minority of entitlement-class of gated community ski resort bums that we've already bailed out using BILLIONS in borrowed dollars they NOW expect the working-class to pay back FOR them with compounding interest paid TO them!

...money they will take out of the country and invest in $1-a-day slave labor overseas, and receive ANOTHER tax break for doing it.

When THEIR bets went sour, WHO guaranteed the TRILLIONS of dollars in undocumented bets they insured through AIG?

Haven't we bailed them out enough, America?

We gave them their tax break under the promise that they'd invested it in America... in the American Dream. Instead they exported it and drove the economy into the ditch.

WE responded by saving their stingy aѕѕes. THEY responded with TeaDumbJerks Inc. marching on behalf of the billionaire Koch brothers.

It's time they gave back. Even Buffet, Gates, and Immelt say it's TIME they gave back.

What is the problem here? Why on earth are the Dems divided about ending tax cuts for the rich? They had better not bow down to the demands of the Republicans again or they will NEVER GET MY VOTE FOR ANYTHING EVER AGAIN!

Is anyone tired of Obama? I sure am. Two years into his Presidency, as a Black guy, i have had enough! he never says anything, or means anything he says. Its the "Audacity of Hype"!! The "change we can believe in" required somone with testicles, cahones, balls! It turns out that Obama has none of those things. If he says something, and someone disagrees, he immediately backpedals. We the people gave him the balls, but he didnt use them. I honestly believe he could have done anything he wanted if he had explained it and just did it. Instead, he chose to respond to those who didnt vote for him, and gave them a voice. As the first Black President (which shouldnt have mattered). I expected an elevation to a higher level. Instead, what i got was bottom feeding. Obama is a good exercise in racial politics. It shows that everyone can be screwed up. As a black American (key on American first(, I will never again just vote for someone because of race. Obama has set blk people back 20 years

Are these Dems serious? We need to be more like the Tea Party and start targeting the Dems who are only seeking re-election for themselves...not for the best interest of their constituents! Call your congressman, senator and tell them to get on the board with the President and stop your selfishness...We the Voter are obligated to go to the voting booth on November...but our votes won't be guaranteed for you!!!

Never seen such cowardice in all my life. Unbelievable. How hard is it to explain? Taxes go back to Clinton era tax rates for everyone who, even in this economy, are STILL pulling in over a quarter mill a year. The other 98% of you get a tax cuts, including small business as only about, what was it.... 8... 9% of small business make over that a year. And they and individuals are still actually getting a tax cut since they get the same break on the first quarter million they make.

Stop being cowed. Jump in, interrupt and you repeat the word no until your opponent stops running his mouth with his nonsense and then speak the truth and do it until people hear you. Americans tend to be dumb we they'll get it eventually.

There is a decade in American History where the highest Individual tax rate was 91% and the highest corporate tax rate was 52%.

There is a decade in American History where the highest Individual tax rate was 35% and the highest corporate tax rate was 35%

In one of these decades total private sector job growth was 22%

In the other it was -2.9%

The democrat’s problem is that they aren’t shouting this from the rooftops because the decade with job growth was the one with high taxes and the decade with job losses was the one with low taxes.

If I own a business making 1,000,000.00 and can take the last 250,000.00 out and be taxed at 35% instead of 91%. I will take it out. IF, I would be taxed at the higher rate – I reinvest it in my company (creating Jobs) to eventually pull it out as a capital gain (at a much lower tax rate) latter when I sell my business.

Low tax rates encourage talking the profit now – High tax rates encourage reinvestment, PERIOD

Only fools or people willfully beholden to the wealthy could be against letting the top brackets expire. First of all, the "increase" is small, only a few % increase on income over $250,000, and it will have a minimal impact on anyone with incomes under $400,000 a year. Those with incomes over that amount aren't going to reduce investments or hire fewer people, etc. as a result of the tax increase, they aren't doing any of that right now anyway! Better to help reduce the deficit than just have that money going into off-shore investments. Heck, we should be taking more money away from the rich, the main thing they use it for is investing in China. For every dollar they have they are doing harm to the US economy! They use the money to close down American businesses and open new ones over seas....

Obama's plan is smart. It eases the deficit the most while hurting the economy the least. If the Republicans want to publicly back the millionaires during a recession where 10% of people don't have jobs, then let them. Democrats need to grow a pair and realize that most people respect disciplined, decisive action in line with your principles more than they care about specific policy issues.

Our country is only as strong as our weakest link. Today, 15 million unemployed US workers are being sacrificed, the largest wholesale destruction of America on record. Nearly the same as all the deaths of WWII.

I wish they would say: here's the plan. If you are for it we will help fund your re-election. If not we will find someone from your stat/district who will.
