Possibly another heart-related death. Is there a way these heart problems can be detected before hand ?

Sometimes.

maybe they can start doing an echocardiogram of all athletes before they begin practice for the season. expensive, but a portable machine that could be moved from school to school in a van could make it more cost effective. Of course you'd need a cardiologist, possibly a pediatric cardiologist to run the test. Perhaps this could be started as a community service so the drs can at least get a tax right off.

Doctors DO NOT get a "write-off" of the value of services provided free to any entity!! Governments (local and state) can demand services and pay NOTHING, charities the same, and even the value of work done for people who could pay (they are wealthy) but don't have no benefit to the physician.

I knew one man who's list of welfare patients was the largest in our city. His compensation for each such patient visit was over five dollars less than it cost him. But when he had to close his practice to further such folks, the press was ALL OVER him, calling him an "elite money grubber".

Shame.

There are tens of millions of kids in high school and a microscopically small amount of tragedy.

Agreed. And did you know that the most dangerous high school sport is baseball -- but those tragedies never seem to make the news.

My prayers are with the Garrett family and friends. This happened 10 yrs. ago at a high school football game I attended with my sons. The young man that hit the player really felt responsible, so I pray also for the other team, as well..

Always a shame when a youth passes on. Thoughts go out to the young mans family and friends that the memories you have of him will bring you comfort in this tough time.

Too many of these deaths or health issues have been happening on high school sidelines this year it seems. Such a sad loss. Prayers for the family and community.

Maybe you just read too much.
I don't think there's more of the stuff; it is just reported more spectacularly and widely.
