Really disgusting. I just read a post on another article stating that s/he preferred fake breasts to real ones...now this...it just hammers home that people are sadly all too gullible when it comes to allowing themselves to be led by the nose by nothing more than revenue-driven imagery.

Their body and their choice I suppose. But I wouldn't do more than shrug and move on if it kills them.

The time has come to ask why the fashion industry pushes the image of heroin addicted malnourished boys as the ultimate in desirable womanhood.

Of course, as a people we could stop buying in to that ridiculous nonsense, stop buying magazines and stop lavishing attention. Or the magazines and catwalks could refuse to deal with models who are dangerously thin. The whole industry really reminds me more of "The Emperor's New Clothes" - Just a massive con that people haven't noticed yet. Not only are we supposed to look like these women, which isn't possible for most, but with modern digital photo manipulation even THOSE women don't look like that.

Time is coming to call them on their con and encourage a culture of "health" rather than "thin".

To designers, models are animate hangers. They want their design to hang optimally and that only happens on sticks. Curves bulge inappropriately.
I think the former model hit on the idea of unions. If the parents of these young girls aren't going to do anything about these working conditions, then it is the obligation of those that came before to step up and correct the problems.

Curves bulge inappropriately???? I thought the designers meant for these clothes to be worn by women? Women are supposed to come with curves.
03:04 PM on 09/23/2010
good point pbh. I also think it's a cop out for designers. You see, designing clothes for women w/curves takes actual skill and a good cut and fit  isn't easy to achieve unless you know what you're doing; Designing  for a stick, not so much.

something to think about......

My husband makes it a point to tell me and my daughters (ages 12 and 9 - and like I'm going to mention my age) that we are the prettiest and the brightest in his eyes. He points out that the magazines they like to look at are not reality and that they should never aspire to want less, be less, or weigh less. Ok...he sometimes have to give me the pet talk as well.

We have so many mottos in my house, but the one I like that he says in private is: "My job as their dad has two purposes...to keep them off the pole and not to have them look like one".

*kiss, kiss hubby*

I'm very sorry for what some of these girls had to go through, it is wrong, but I'm also afraid that a movie like this will cast a very one sided opinion about the fashion industry! I have been a model for almost 10 years now and I witnessed many things around me these girls were describing in the movie, but I never had to go through it myself, I ate my way through Milan Paris NY Tokyo never once I was told I needed to lose weight! Why? Cuz I'm naturally skinny and exercised all my life! I just think the modeling industry need to be regulated and models that r not naturally thin (and when I say thin I mean healthy thin not sticking out bones sick looking) should not get into this industry! If they body type is a bit bigger then required by the industry they can still make big bucks with their beautiful faces for beauty campaigns and such! Nobody should work under 18 especially while their bodies r still developing! Some of those agents need to be fired, it's never worth the money girls! It's ur health!

I'm sad for them too- but they did not have to go through it. It is a choice. There are those who starve and have no choice- they are a bit more deserving of sympathy.

I read a book of diet tips once that suggested putting a cotton ball in your mouth when you felt like eating.

they could make sandwiches with square cotton pads and then maybe tacos with the round ones...I did once see a woman on the emergency room show who ate about five rolls of toilet paper a day...weird stuff!!

They eat cotton balls? That was one of Milo Minderbender's scams in Catch 22. He was stealing the troops' rations and substituting cotton balls.
01:39 PM on 09/23/2010
My frustration has nothing to do with models eating cotton balls... if they think that's good for them then fine... what I can't understand is why/how is this attractive/sexy/elegant/chic? A woman that looks like a young boy is attractive because she has long hair? We are not talking about thin anymore (5'8" 125 lbs) we are now talking about 5'11" 100 lbs. I know someone who was naturally very thin ... 5"11' 115 lbs -JUST PICTURE That ... she was told to try Victoria's Secret because she had the "Healthy" look!
01:46 PM on 09/23/2010
One of the reasons extreme thinness has become the ideal is that it allows the fashion industry to cut corners on tailoring. It takes a lot more labor, skilled labor, to create garments that truly fit women with curves. In the ready-to-wear industry, that drives costs up enormously for manufacturers. What to do? Convince women that they need to be built like clothes hangers--as close to 2-dimensional as possible. The average dress size for American women is a 12-14, and the bra cup size is a C. Most high fashion designers who use runway models stop their sizes at size 8 or 10--they are not remotely designing for normal-looking women, even Marilyn Monroe wouldn't fit into their clothes.

You had me convinced until you started talking about sizes. In the US those numbers mean nothing. Measure your waist - that is the ONLY way to know what size you are. A 10 at HM fits me snugly while I wear a 6 at Express. The numbers are irrelevant. And often very VERY "generous". There was just an article about how men's pants (Docker's, Old Navy, etc) that utilize the "inches" tag were shorting people at between 2-3.5 inches. So, those 32s are actually a 35.5.
01:35 PM on 09/23/2010
but no, the latest fashion show used "plus sized model" - you know big women like size 6 or (gasp) even 8 - say it ain't so
