I've not seen someone miss the point in such grand fashion in quite a while. Kudos!

It's been shown over and over that when you keep people frightened, it's easier to control them. This is the very clear agenda of the Republican Party, and it's what Colbert is making fun of. Bring your plastic sheets and duct tape to the rally!

As for airplanes and threat colors, I wish there were a color-coded warning system for screaming babies.

No, Jon Stewart's rally is NOT called "Bring Back Sanity" it's called "Rally to Restore Sanity." And Colbert is doing a PARODY. He's MOCKING the Republicans and the Democrats, because fear is a useful tool, and he's drawing attention to it. So yeah, change the premise of your article and it's decent - but what you should be doing is thanking Stephen Colbert for bringing attention to the fear mongering. And check your facts about Jon Stewart's rally. Sheesh.

You have to understand Colbert's M.O. to understand the humor in "Keep Fear Alive".
I can't wait to watch the rallies on 10-30.

My own theory is that we're all suffering from PTSD. After 70 years of "wars and the rumours of wars", in an increasingly totalitarian state in which a "middle class" has basically been created, enriched, and destroyed all in one lifetime, it's not reasonable to expect citizens to face the future with optimism or equanimity. None of us, left right or center, are exactly brimming over with trust these days. And we are so deluged with lies that it's hard to sort out the realities...

So true. I think that is why we are now the "Prozac Nation." Everyone I know seems to be on some sort of drug to help them cope or to keep them from being depressed because they cannot cope..

Actually, the republican party does need to keep fear alive. Fear is one-half of the republican platform, smear being the other half.

Colbert is parodying a fundamental Republican (and Dem) message. It's parody. It's ironic. He draws attention to the use of fear and manipulation in politics thereby reducing its effectiveness in messaging. Got it?

To treat Colbert's rally as a serious message is to miss the point entirely and distracts from the otherwise important message you're conveying about doing sensible risk assessment.

Thank you :)
- but the rally is real and serious, I'm sure with some humor injected.

I'm not sure where you see the author taking Colbert's message seriously. Perhaps YOU missed the irony in his post.
