As for Klein he did nothing to help the NYC school system. Now he's at Faux. No surprise there.
05:49 PM on 11/09/2010
do some research. talk to your friends in the education world. Joel Klein did a helluva a lot more than nothing. yes the education system is a wreck, its a mess all over this country and a lot of Mr Klein's initiatives were brave steps to work against the issues. he has taken a strong stance in focusing on shrinking the race and gender disparities that we see in our city. and he has had to deal with the teachers union through it all. enough with the empty complaints. every day the comment section is filled with misinformed people complaining over and over.

Anyone who knew anything about Bloomberg knew he was anti union and hasn't a clue about the lives of average New York City residents. He bullied his way into a third term and was supposedly chastened by the fact that he won re election by the slightest of margins. Yeah, right.

On the day the NY Times prints an article citing the problems African American boys are having in the educational system Bloomberg appoints a woman whose children are in boarding school in Connecticut. Connecticut. Unreal.

Are you really surprised? When the elites send their children to public school, then the system might begin to improve...until then....Black will keep chair warm for the next one, and the next one--meanwhile, money will be wasted and students will learn less and less....

I have a relative who worked with Mr. Klein in the Justice Department in the early 1990s - and thought he was an intellectual lightweight.

But can Ms. Black spell “Luxury Condos?” I’d wager she already lives in one.

My favorite is the twenty-something prinicpals, a creation of Mr. Klein.

Have to admit they are funny...so full of positive energy, thinking if they try really hard (I think I can, I think I can) that they might make a dent in the system (and then go home and post on their blogs about the difference they are making until reality hits them hard on the head, lol).

Yes, the Leadership Academy, where to qualify as a Principal- in-Training, one only needed to be a teacher for a minimum of three years. Headed up by Mr. Welch of GE who advocated to the principals to be that 10% of their staff should be fired every year, regardless of effectiveness as per GE's business model.

Will people please now start thinking that maybe the problem with education is NOT the teachers or the unions, but that people who have no experience with education are in charge of schools. Unbelievable.

And her children were in BOARDING SCHOOL?? Can't wait to see how this works out....

So, the problems with education started with Klein? Don't think so.
05:34 PM on 11/09/2010
They did not get fixed with Klein either.

The Klein legacy:

Public taxpayer money to private corporations
Zero teaching experience
More interested in publicity than actual work
Closing schools and overcrowding other schools because of it
Teach to the test, teach to the test and more teach to the test
Cutting funds for afterschool programs
Dismissive to parents and teachers

Oh and let us not forget touting of himself as the "greatest education reformer" when schools are still a mess and the only thing he clamps onto is the same thing H P and MSNBC l@ckeys clamp onto privitize, privitize and more privitize.....good riddance.

Of course, Black sounds a bit out of her league but does have LOTS of experinces in closing newsrooms and laying off reporters so I am sure that little Miss "Send my kids to boarding schools so I have no investment in yours" Black will be happily closing all the schools Klein wanted closed. More overcrowding and less teachers.....sounds like Bloomy's wet dream.

this is why NYC public schools ain't going no where. Bloomberg keeps hiring "Business Executives" with no educational experience to run the schools. no wonder teachers getting a bad rap, He's assembling a PR machine to demonize them with all these marketing executives.

The teachers' union had a bad rap long before Bloomberg. Until and unless the unions stop protecting the weak, burned-out and unqualified among their members, the bad rap will remain.

Am I missing something? They appointing someone with no experience in Education for this position just because she's a billionaire? I'm not following. Someone explain to me how it's fine.
05:12 PM on 11/09/2010
That's part of the plan. Screw up the system; Then, say it doesn't work and scrap it for charters and vouchers. No pensions, 'at will' employees etc... Get it now?
