Call it a fight and you are asking Obama to ignore it.
04:12 PM on 11/20/2010
this is much more important than obama's re-election or your tax bill next year:
the great republican plan to kill new deal and modern american society worked. tax cuts baby. and don't tell me you never knew what hit you, mr grover norquest among others explained the strategy. the irony, of course, is that the first african american president supported by the most liberal part of democratic party in primaries put a nail in the FDR's political coffin.tell me why i should vote for obama next time. i truly believe that he would abandon civil rights legislation if he thought that it was politically impossible to defend it.

nothing is more permanent than a temporary fix.

Yet another Obama-bashing headline.

So sad.

You're right that they do a lot of Obama-bashing headlines here, but I don't agree that this is one of them. It's just as an analysis of the choice before him -- actually all the democrats in Congress, not just Obama -- and what is likely to happen depending on the choice made. The article itself is well thought out and well written, and I think this one is a no-brainer.

What really irks me is, when dems have a super majority, they buckle at the mere mention of a threat of a possibility of a filibuster. When they're still in the majority but with a smaller margin, they just straight up hand the GOP everything the GOP demands on a silver f-ing platter.

When the GOP is in control even by the slightest margin, they just steamroll their agenda regardless of anything which tries to get in their way.

Democrats are freaking pathetic.

I'm voting Green from now on.

The Tax Cuts have been embarrasingly bad yet Republicans either know it and lie about it OR they simply are too stupid to understand basic economics
03:16 PM on 11/20/2010
The cuts proposed by Obama and Democrats are not just for those earning less than $250,000, they are for everryone. It needs to be stated correctly. Obama and the Democrats (mort of them anyway) are proposing tax cuts for all income under $250,000, only income above $250,000 would revert to the higher marginal tax rate prior to Bush. Everyone would receive an extension of the tax cut on the first $250,000 of income.

Not sure why this is always mistated by the media, mainstream or otherwise.

Let all the Bush Tax cuts expire. Make the new GOP congress fight for 'Millionaire Tax Cuts."

If Obama doesn't draw a line in the sand here, his presidency won't survive the headlines that will inevitably follow: "OBAMA CAVES!"
07:04 PM on 11/20/2010
Yes, let them all expire. Then the Republicans can try and re-enact the cuts and see how that works out. Besides, the these cuts are projected to cost $3.7 trillion.

Of course, any sane person would want Obama to fail.

Imagine two people are riding in a car. The passanger on the right says, "I just realized, we are going the wrong way. Every minute we drive in this direction we get further from where we need to go."

The driver on the left says, "But we are making such good time."

All the passenger can do is hope the car runs out of gas before it is too late.

Maybe Obama "can't ignore this issue", but if we have learned anything about our Kumbayah President, he will ignore it. He won't stand up to wealthy bullies whose plans for America include the resumption of indentured servitude and jail time for debt.

If Obama does NOT extend the tax cuts for the middle class, he WILL lose the next election, its the economy stupid, not petty Democratic party politics. The majority of the voters are tired of the Democratic party focusing on internal politics and insane anti Republican attacks instead of the economy.. Pelosi and Obama's lack of leadership cost the party the election.

01:31 PM on 11/20/2010
I don't think you're understanding the proposal. The plan for Democrats is in two parts: (1) let all the Bush tax cuts expire; then (2) in the new year, with the new Republican House, propose a new set of tax cuts for people making less than $250,000 per year. If the Republicans hold up the new tax cut, then they get the blame for the economic woes.

I agree that lack of leadership cost the Dems the election, but it was mostly lack of leadership in messaging. They needed to call out the Republicans for their obstructionism, not keep trying to reach across the aisle.
02:34 PM on 11/20/2010
Pelosi is demonstrating strong leadership. The woman has a backbone made of steel. She says now way to 'Millionaire Tax Cuts.'

The so called tax cuts, in their entirety, should be allowed to expire. The suggestion that it would exascerbate this economic slump in any consequential way is just more wall street hogwash, trumpeted incessantly by the Republican elephant.

It's not taxation that's killing the economy. It's imprudent governmental policy of just about every kind, coupled with imprudent spending. Impose and collect taxes reasonably, and spend reasonably in conjunction with the implementation of wise domestic and foreign policy, and presto, we'd have a revived and healthy economy in no time. It's the government's irresponsible policies, domestic and foreign, and the irresponsible spending that goes with those policies, that's hurting the economy, the middle class and the poor.

See how simple it is to figure out, and how easy it'd be to fix things?
