Thank you Mr. Begala, for your reasonable, honest, and accurate article. Bravo!

"We must strengthen Social Security .." Exactly WHY do we need to "strengthen" a program that is fiscally sound for 27 more years, approx.? Or forever if the country ever gets back to 6% unemployment or a 2.5% economic growth rate?

Exactly WHY does this man who has come up with the ugliest "solutions" to problems like health care delivery - "I got it!! Let's give private insurers, who are one of our biggest problems, TRILLIONS MORE!!!" - and deficit reduction - "OK. I will pre-emptively cave in on tax cuts for the richest 1%!" - want to "strengthen" Social Security?

WHY can't we leave the ONE THING in the whole government that is working as designed ALONE!

Contact your Congresspeople and let them know they will not get away with this disgusting attack on our future.

The airplane metaphor mentioned above made me cringe. Maybe it was the double meaning of the word impact, but I thought it was the worst line of the whole speech.

Are you serious? How on earth did you possibly get the notion Obama was talking to the "little people" (a great term to tick people off with, by the way)? Did he mention foreclosures?
This SOTU was a pro-business Reagan speech with very little substance.

No, did you? The foreclosure crisis is a huge part of our current financial crisis and OBama does not have the wherewithall to make the banks take some losses and help out people about to lose their homses - which would help the economy, by the way, keeping people in their homes. This was the most business-friendly SOTU speech EVER given by a Democrat. It brought to mind Reagan because Obama is a huge fan of Reagan.

It is all us little people who understand the message of the Tea Party and Michelle Bachmann. We were inspired by her speech last night. If I saw Lincoln giving the Gettysburg Address from the side of the audience and he was not looking at me, it would still be a great speech. Same with Michelle.

That's very sad for anyone who can 'understand' the message of the Tea Party and MisShill Bachmann. The Tea Party doesn't even understand their own message. 67% of them would rather pay higher taxes than change Social Security. Um, hello Taxed Enough Already - that means eliminating all public services, period. Not that I would want that. I would gladly pay twice as much taxes for better benefits.

If you don't realize how the game is rigged against American workers by our government then you may feel that Obama is "putting the jam on the lower shelf" as Mr. Begala explains. But if he were a technical professional he would know first hand that our government is at war with workers. From H-1B work visas to proposed amnesty to free trade with communist slave labor China our government has rigged the game against workers at all levels of income and skill.

And when Obama says "competitive" he means to further the competition between American workers and workers with no rights in a communist dictatorship. And I suspect he also plans to increase or remove quotas on the number of foreign workers that corporations can import into the US. This form of wage suppression is rampant and very effect at driving down wages.

There's no short-term fix for this country. This is going to be a long-term slog. Infrastructure projects, by their very nature, create jobs in the country. Education and R&D support to jump-start new businesses will take longer. If all we do is concentrate on reducing the deficit, not only will future generations have no opportunity and no safety net...they will have no future.
01:38 PM on 01/26/2011
Absolutely right.
01:42 PM on 01/26/2011
Republicans are looking for short term votes, so any spending cuts they do - regardless of how terrible the long term impact would be - gains them popularity as they hype up the importance of austerity. They've always been the party of short term results, to he// with the future. Funny that they're also the ones who invoke the images of our children suffering under huge debt.

Any working person who votes for the repubs, is in total denial.

Obama hopes to follow in his illustrious foot steps, I believe. No wonder he loaded his campaign and now cabinet with Clinton retreads. The Bush hold overs are another matter. Imagine that, 30 straight years of Conservative presidents and look what it has done to our country? Prove those who say that the ideology is bankrupt correct. A bankrupt ideology leading our country to bankruptcy! Hey, conservatives, you can't cut taxes (reduce government revenue), start wars (spending,) have trade deficits (investment outflows,) oil dependence (cash outflows) and not suffer the consequences we are now. 14 Trillion national debt to foreign creditors. Loss of national sovereignty. Loss of manufacturing base. High unemployment.

When are the DLC dinosaurs going to go away? This kind of blind partisan cheerleading gets us nowhere fast.

Prez O didn't connect with anyone outside that chamber last night. Vague reassurances, coach-like peptalk about competition and the usual (required?) American exceptionalism pandering doesn;t relly play much among the majority who are really suffering with little real hope in sight. As a performance it was just fine, but as substance it was pitiful.

It was the first major speech of the campaign season.
02:31 PM on 01/26/2011
Being gay, it connected well with me. It also convinced my Republican dad to vote for Obama. the president isn't trying to connect with extremists, he's trying to connect with everyone.
05:45 PM on 01/26/2011
Sounds like the part about DADT connected well with you. What about the rest of it ? Who are these "extremists" you mention? Are they non-Republicans, someone different from you dad?

Oh - by the way, I'm gay too and have been for 59 years. However that does not limit my concerns for a broad range of issues that affect all citizens, not just LGBT citizens.

WaPo

"The reality, as Mr. Obama understands, is that the country is headed for fiscal catastrophe unless it does some politically unpopular things: unwind the Bush tax cuts, including for the middle class; reduce projected Social Security benefits for future retirees, exempting the poor and disabled; rein in the cost of health care; limit popular income tax deductions. Mr. Obama knows this, but last night he did little to prepare Americans for any of it."

01:08 PM on 01/26/2011
Paul, the Dems need to take control of this tax and spending issue and win back the House in 2012 here is how and why:

If the federal government is running a $1.5 trillion dollar annual deficit, then make the GOP publicly do the math, because even if in the unlikely event they decide to cut waste, fraud, and welfare for the rich, which totals about 700 billion dollars per year, the rich are going to have to pay more in taxes to pay for the remaining 800 billion dollars in deficit spending which the GOP is not prone to do either. Given their ideology, it follows that the GOP needs to make even further cuts in government spending probably in the defense budget because there is no reason or just basis whatsoever for cutting social security or for families making less than $100,000 per year to bear any more taxes.

As to the other shoe on the other foot, the President and the Democratic Party needs to take that shoe out of its mouth and shed its “big government” and “big tax and spending” reputation and start incessantly and publicly demanding that the Republican controlled House of Representatives give the American people a balanced budget and a public and detailed and specific answer to the question, what spending is going to be cut and what taxes are going to be raised and why?
.
01:32 PM on 01/26/2011
the only thing that will be cut is the amount of money we take home,,corp. have 1 1/2 trillion setting on the side lines an the best Obama can give us is more tax cuts for corp.??
01:03 PM on 01/26/2011
Thank you pokeyoakey. NONE of us are "little" or "common". We are Americans. As such, if we could just stop fighting with each other like angry siblings and LOOK TO THE EAST... at D.C., we might find out we have been SOLD DOWN THE RIVER. No dog and pony show can change that. And that is what the SOTU speech was. A nothing speech. A dog and pony show. I grew so bored I switched off when they finished clapping AGAIN for the soldiers, a must-do to appease the injured people THEY INJURED.

I hear there is a BIG MARCH of common folk in D.C. this March. If you really want a change, plan to be there. The more people flood the streets, the bigger statement we will make. I figure we need about 17 million folk to illustrate the 17 trillion they've attempted to extract from our rather bleak future.

Be there or shut up.

Date & Time... or link please. Sounds great... we need to take to the streets to demand we get our government back from JP Morgan Chase and the other Wall Street cronies. We need to let President Obama know that we weren't trying to elect Reagan lite. We also need to make it clear that he cannot take our votes for granted!
