Cars of the future will be so costly when having them repaired, because of all the sensors, that most people probably will not be able to afford them. The cost will come from labor charges involved in finding which sensor is having a problem. Finding the basic cause of the sensor failing. Is it mechanical, electrical, both, or some outside static interference, who knows. Hope it can decipher the difference between garlic, and alcohol.

nonsense, very simple solution...
FIRST DUI...$100,000 fine, lose license for a year......SECOND DUI..$250,000 fine and you lose your license for LIFE.

simple solution

OK, but what about speeders? About 11,000 people killed in 2009 in speeding-related crashes (roughly the same as the number of people killed in alcohol-related crashes that year). It's been well-documented that SPEEDING KILLS. Shouldn't speeders be subject to the same penalties?

Do you understand what a DUI does now?
It isn't a slap on the wrist.People lose their jobs and marriages break up.
People do go to prison and lose their homes.
People should be reminded of the penalties every
time alcohol is advertized on TV. They seem to forget
very easily until it is brought up.
Instead it is al about god times and attractive people.
Just about every person walkkng out of any bar could be busted.
Most have no clue what the penalties are.

It will never go over, the states make too much money forcing the ignition locks onto DUI recipients. I don't drink and don't want to be saddled with the extra expense of a built in drunk detector either.

It is coming down to where one drink will be considered too intoxicated to drive.

Ridiculous.
08:01 AM on 01/29/2011
We're almost there now. If you have a few drinks, and drink faster than one per hour, you're flirting with the limit.
08:18 AM on 01/29/2011
people like you eventually kill people because of your own arrogance. there are whole cell blocks of people in jail for your kind of thinking.
you think your a big man? you can handle one drink right? i mean big deal.
when you have another humans blood on your hands you will wish you had this device.
your comment proves we need these things to save lives.

God ... right in the middle of the page is an ad for Grey Goose vodka ... seems like computers may not be that smart to put that ad there ... hope they are better judging if people are drunk or not. How bout if they are just crappy drivers?

Why don't they just program the computer to drive the car instead of watching everyone's every action because of those unfit to be in society ?

I don't drink alcohol. I don't approve of drunk driving. However, I find the notion of having to pay for a government mandated alcohol testing contraption in my car to be absurd. The idea is only workable to the most ignorant people who are obsessed with demonizing drinking. Possibly the Mormons in Utah will like this.

and seat belts are only for people that get in accidents. see how your logic is backwards.

Not just religious groups, also groups like MAAD have been overrun with people that are basically prohibitionists as the above commenter lastwave illustrates. Scroll up a few comments and this person basically called me a future_killer.

Technology in the USA that would save lives? The Liquor lobby will stall this for the next 30 years. Won't happen. Liquor, like cigarettes, like war... over people.
