I don't understand all of the negative comments regarding Bush 41. He made a budget compromise with the democrats that ultimately cost him re-election, he agreed to raise taxes in spite of his "No new taxes" campaign pledge. When Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait, he mobilized an international coalition which ultimately restored Kuwait with low(less than 200) US casualities and then left. Received funding from other countries regarding the war which meant the US didn't even have to pay for our involvement. He skillfully presided over the peaceful fall of the USSR and it's Warsaw Pact allies. Unfortunately for him, he was President when the longest peacetime expansion in our history ended(they ALL do). If there's a recession during an election - You Lose. If unemployment is still high in Nov 2012, Obama will as well.

Well, I'd say he was wonderful in his one right. If you look at his life and the choices he made, enlisting in the Navy at 18, Oil businessman, serving as a Congressman, UN ambassador, Ambassador to China, CIA Director, VP and then President it's hard not to be impressed. He also seems to be a genuinely good person, husband and father.

I'd agree that as Repub presidents go, Bush-1 was one of the best Repub Presidents over the past century, accentuated further by his sitting for only a single term.

Barbara Bush is a major count without the 'o'. Always has been. Evil to the core.
01:42 PM on 02/15/2011
Now, that IS a particularly vulgar projection you just flung. Problem is, it so doesn't stick - at all - to Barbara Bush. So, you'd better keep it and work on yourself.

deep down inside he is good man...that's matters more than being a Bush.
02:51 PM on 02/15/2011
How do you know that he's a good man? Or maybe you should tell us what that means to you and how he fits into that definition of "good." Personally, I prefer giving people the benefit of the doubt but with Papa Bush, I'm just not feeling it at all. This was the guy who ran the CIA for awhile. Good and CIA seldom collide.

If you believe the unauthorized biographies about them, he didn't. Bush Sr. wanted and expected Jeb bush to run, he was their chosen son. But George W had more ambition and an inherent need to compete with and for his father and 'correct' the historical record of his father's 1 term presidency, which he viewed as unjust failure. All of this supposedly drove W to run for president, despite his parent's objections and wishes that he wouldn't.

I think there's some evidence of this while W was president. Bush Sr is a passionate guy, a crier, but his interviews about W were always fairly dispassionate. He was removed from what W was up to and was very hands off in interviews, often saying "its up to him now". Conversely, he would be very passionate about Jeb in public, even crying about him while giving a speech once. I think on this issue his heart has always been on his sleeve, Jeb was supposed to be his successor in his view.

I had heard through a journalist reporting on Texas baseball back when that Bush Sr was pretty much fed up with W when he messed up his job with the Rangers.

I wasn't referring to anything other than them encouraging him to run for president when they knew he wasn't up to it. I seem to remember an interview early in W's governorship when someone asked his mother about him running for president and she laughed out loud. I've said it before and I'll say it again, W was a an ordinary guy in extra-ordinary times. They had no business encouraging him onto the national stage, then again he was smarter than palin, but he had same lack of eagerness as her to learn about the world.

Is that who Bush Sr.'s girl friend was?

When Reagan was shot in 1982 and Bush Sr. was VP, I heard from a Washington insider it took a long time to locate Bush because he was off with girl friend.

Yes, he got her a do nothing job at the FCC and used to send a limo to pick her up at night when he was DCI. It went on for years. She would travel when he did. Babs knew about her. She came home early from a trip because of it when she realized they both were there.
