Decline and modernization (1828–1908)

During this period, the Empire faced challenges in defending itself against foreign invasion and occupation. The Empire ceased to enter conflicts on its own and began to forge alliances with European countries such as France, the Netherlands, Britain, and Russia. As an example, in the 1853 Crimean War, the Ottomans united with Britain, France, and the Kingdom of Sardinia against Russia.

At the height of its power, in the 16th and 17th centuries, the empire spanned three continents,[7] controlling much of Southeastern Europe, Western Asia and North Africa.[8] The Ottoman Empire contained 29 provinces and numerous vassal states, some of which were later absorbed into the empire, while others were granted various types of autonomy during the course of centuries. The empire also temporarily gained authority over distant overseas lands through declarations of allegiance to the Ottoman Sultan and Caliph, such as the declaration by the Sultan of Aceh in 1565; or through the temporary acquisitions of islands in the Atlantic Ocean, such as Lanzarote in 1585.

Muammar, you're going DOWN!

Hiring out-of-country mercenaries to kill your own people? -- That's a hangin' offense.

After a few years, and WWI, and perhaps another WW with a different Roman numeral, I think it was abbreviated into "B.P."

Now, of course, some will probablly pummel me over facts. But they don't know yet that the facts and the truth are often two entirely different things.

“I will die as a martyr”
in my own mind. But in reality placed to one side, a forgotten irrelevance of a man.

"The Libyan people and the popular revolution will control Libya."
Ah, the Dinar has finally dropped.

Dear Muammar, If you are right and they are wrong, then by all that is holy debate that claim peacefully. But if your only evince is violence and vexatiousness, then vanquished you already are. For those are the responses and reserves of a rabid beast, not reasoning humankind.
If anything can ever be said to be written, it is this. When the leader’s arguments hold no water, the people are compelled to clamor against insufferable thirst.

I loved Bill Clinton, but that was and is a real tragedy and one he will always regret. Of course, whenever the U.S. gets involved, we are blamed for something; when we don't get involved, we're blamed for it. Still, Rwanda seemed like a no-brainer.

Why are you so tired of Khaddafy? I admit he is a bad guy, but he is not the only baddie in this world.

Has the American media worked people up into a lather?
03:58 AM on 02/23/2011
Yes! its the lather coming from the videos of unarmed protesters being shot with high powered government firearms from a safe distance, maybe I'm on a slippery slope but I've heard that blood makes a nice lubricant until it dries.

He's a Paddy Chayevsky screenplay transplanted to North Africa, from sometime about when this goof started, before he had TV cameras available.

Enterainment is where you find it sometimes, although you ask a very valid question. Somebody's media is always working somebody else's media up.
