We're living a Great Renewal
12:10 PM on 03/03/2011
Since the mid1980s when The Great Restructuring was put in place globally, in every country taxes were cut to corporations (under the spin ... create jobs and competition) and individuals (under the spin ... user pay and consumer choice). Doing these two things have reduced governments everywhere and given corporations unprecedented global power!

Now is the time we understand the power of taxation into our general fund for 'our common welfare'. Perhaps governments should let us choose where our taxes work when we are individuals.

As for corporations ... they are now 'stateless' and are sucking our money into their profits.

Now is the time for a Great Renewal ... where all Transnationals are broken up (to really create competition destroyed by the mergers/acquisitions) and requiring international businesses have a 'home' country which they support through their taxes.

Notice how tax revenue has been diminishing while expenditures have skyrocketed upwards.
We'll not mention those though.

It just seems like we all feel we have too much to lose to really make a substantial protest about these things...even when we have so little at this point. It'll take an Egypt style reaction to stop this nonsense. What else could?

A graph of real wages would look the same, without that uptick between 2004 and 2009.

Re read the title....."as a percentage of gdp"

Tax rates could be up and this title could still be true.

What corporate tax cuts for the wealthy are doing is creating a banana republic out of the USA.
Soon the mega rich will be living behind high walls in their gated Ivory Tower homes fighting off looters while the rest of us are begging for food and living in squalid slums!

Rent the movie, "Soylent Green" You will be amazed at how close to reality that movie came. IT's happening and Monsanto will be the Corporation that ends up turning people into Soylent Green if they have their way.

So if corporations can be people and not pay taxes, can we the people become corporations and not pay taxes?

They've been sitting on more than $1 trillion since the stock market recovery. But why would they share any of it with the middle class by creating more jobs?

We're back to the Robber Baron days of Cornelius Vanderbilt et.al. Vanderbilt: "I owe the public nothing."

What were they under Reagan?

But then again, what was anything under Reagan, but an Ayn Rand-ian dreamland of all time low taxes, minimal government growth and meddling, and maximum prosperity. Of course, none of that is true, but still...

Great to see the companies that are extremely destructive, very profitable, and pollute the most: petroleum, and mining, get the lower tax rate. That's what money buys you in America today.

Make GOP just GO
11:41 AM on 03/03/2011
Really? Is this possibly new information to anyone?

Americans are making less and less money while the rich and corporate big wigs rake it in!
Any 12 year old can read a simple graph showing how wages, for hard working Americans, have gone in the crapper whilst taxes for the wealthy have gone down, down, down & their incomes have gone up, up, up.

Those who vote, over and over again, for these Republicans(the new version of robber barons) are simply very bad at math and easily side tracked by well played wedge issues.
They are the ones who will wake up one day and ask, "where did my life go, where did my savings go" it was taken away while you worried about abortion rights and brown people crossing the borders, fool!

While not new information to those of us that really have been paying attention, it is something that those who are so distracted by the "social" or "moral" issues just don't understand. Our rights, our jobs, our financial success capabilities have been under attack for decades and they just blindly sit back and let the weatlhy and big business control our lives. We are so very close to becoming a complete fascist country and a large number of our working class people don't know it.
11:41 AM on 03/03/2011
Yeah, hello? Can anyone out there do the math?

It was the plan all along, a dislocation between corporate profits and jobs. They didn't like having to share the upside, so they gamed the rules.

The Clinton administration knew this, Wall Street knew this, and the corporate media they own simply branded anyone who warned about it as a doomsaying kook.

Just go back and watch Sir James Goldsmith--one of the biggest capitalists anywhere, but defiantly honest--laying it all out on Charlie Rose back in 1994. Rose then had a Clinton administration hack come on and shoot down everything he asserted. Well... just look at everything that's unfolded since that debate, and you'll see who's assessment and predictions proved astonishingly correct.

Wall Street efficiently pushed for what was in Wall Street's interests, wrapping it in promises and reasoning that was mere hollow salesmanship--insisting NAFTA and GAT would bring better jobs to Americans.

Forget Madoff, our entire economy has been de-regulated into a pyramid scam. The loads of Dynasty-style wealth funneled upward had to come from somewhere, folks: so it was sucked out of the middle.

And once it reaches a certain threshold, it never goes away: just passed down from generation to generation, a neo-royal class born into assured prosperity.

Now what was once true of Hollywood is true of America in general: you can make a killing, but you can't make a living.
