"That's what presidents do for a living – very similar to what lobbyists do for a living,"

That explains it all!

I'm MUCH more concerned by Barbour's neo-confederate past than his lobbying.
08:59 AM on 04/13/2011
You should be concerned. Down here in the South, being a neo-confederate is a badge of honor.

Honor and neo-confederate should never be used in the same sentence, IMO.

Spot on observation. Any man who finds nothing objectionable about honoring a Confederate general who was a founder of the KKK with a specialty license plate has his moral compass seriously out of whack.

And you KNOW the only reason he walked that one back was because of all the blow-back he got - and was surprised by! Anybody who can say, with a straight face, that the civil rights-era south "wasn't that bad" should never be allowed anywhere near the White House - even as a visitor. Thought I'd fan you long ago, Aldyth; fixed it.

Anyone against ethanol has my vote!

Barbour has a complicated past just as the South has. The North (includes me) will not let the South grow out of its past including its Civil Rights post Slavery issues. From what I have heard from Barbour he is more forthright than many politicians; given all of them are liars in one way or another or they never would have been elected to office.

The real point is that a Southerner will never be elected President again in our lifetime. Both Carter and Clinton saw to that.

Oh, because he was a lobbyist. I thought you were referring to the nefarious schemes that he and Roscoe P. Coltraine used to pull against the Duke boys in Hazard County.
07:23 AM on 04/13/2011
I think Barbour's main argument in his favor is a failure from the get go. He has basically said that he has been very good at lobbying for those who paid him for that service. Now he says he would be very good at lobbying for the country. Who will be paying him more, the taxpayers or the corporations that would pay for his campaign? I think we know who would benefit.

When Barbour entered it....

Should the time come to thoroughly vet Barbour and if we have anyone left who actually does investigative reporting, he would have far more current problems surrounding misspent Katrina funds than his lobbying shenanigans would render.  He will be leaving MS worse off than when he returned from his decades in D C to build his potentials as a presidential candidate.

Whereas, Barbour's capturing the GOP nomination looks dim right now (he is an establishment Bush republican with no firm ties to the baggers or the evangelicals, I can see a pathway to the WH in a general election.  As Chairman of the RGA, he put republicans in the governor's office of multiple states and there is no one in the GOP that does owe Haley in one way or another.  His national roll out has been surprisingly flawed, but pretending that he is a Bachmann, a Palin, a Gingrich or a Trump would be underestimating him.  Let's face it.  Democrats have a long, bitter history of underestimating him allowing him to rebuild the GOP and capture the Congress in 1994, put Bush in office in 2000, win NJ and VA Governor's races, and blow the democrats out of office in 2010 in governorships across the nation.

'' Let's face it. Democrats have a long, bitter history of underestimating him allowing him to rebuild the GOP and capture the Congress in 1994, put Bush in office in 2000.''

Looking at what the GOP has become, I see this as a negative. You forgot to mention that the Democrats trounced the GOP in '06 and '08. Haley Barbour will never become president with his past. He's now trying to rewrite history. Putting Bush in office is the biggest negative Barbour has.The GOP has turned into a joke. Again.

" All GOP Hopefuls 2012 Ambitions Could Be Complicated By Past" is more accurate.
1) Romey - Father State Of Mass. Health Insc. plan--ROMNEYCARE-- framework for President Obama Affordable Health Care Act. Also some GOP Tea Party Christians frown on his Mormon roots.
2) Palin - "Quitter" Half-term gov., Fox TV Poopdit, Queen of Know-Nothing Tea Party, Walking encylopedia-not, King Maker to Sharron Angle & Christine O'donnell
3) Tim Pawlenty - Recent Poll Asking GOP faithful to identify him - 6 out 10 did not know his name.
4) Newt Gingrich - Recent Libya policy Flip-Flop, many mistresses & ex-wives, 1995 Shut down govt. fame, pretty much a retread, ethics violations, loves to hear himself talk and talk and talk.
5)Michelle Bachmann- plays fast and loose with facts, CNN's Anderson enjoys shooting her down, loves to receive Ag. subsides for family farm, GOP refused her choice committee assignment-sent her packing so she formed 1st Congressional Tea Party caucus & she is the Chairman!
6)Haley Barbour- Lobbyist/Oldest profession in the world, History Buff Revisionist-shedding new light on Slavery, Civil War, Racism in the South. May be special adviser - Texas School Board that is ripping out pages of history and replacing with kindler, gentler on the old White South. Also unforturnately for the State Of Mississipi his term of governor left it pretty much on or close to the bottom of US state rankings across the board on everything.
7) Donald Trump- Need to see birth certificate for his hair!

GW had geniuses who covered up his idiocy, played up his "bipartisanship", and sold the "Compassionate Conservative®" crap. It would take a miracle worker to transform Haley Blobber from Lester Maddox Jr. to a votable package. This would be a miracle.
11:58 PM on 04/13/2011
You are correct about GW's past, he failed at every job and venture till a family friend cut him into a piece of The Texas Rangers baseball team. Ahhhhh, the American Dream! But GW has his daddy's machine to rely upon for the national election. None of these GOP 2012 goobers have access to anything like that. Thanks for comment, my friend.
