We're number one! We're number one!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_military_expenditures

Any discussion about how BROKE we are that puts discussing how much we spend on the military off the table is not a serious discussion.

Most people should read it twice anyway.

How can we compete with China, as an example, when we pour so much of our GDP into the miltiary, and they put much much more into infrastructure and manufacturing?

Yes, we sell a lot of these weapons systems, but in some cases, it's a money shuffle.

We GIVE Egypt Billions in aid, then they buy the weapons?

What that means is, our taxpayers basically armed the Egyptian Military.

This is why the USA is going broke and we're going to fall apart. Congress feels the need to throw money into "Defense", when in reality it should be going into its middle class - kids need schools, healthcare, and food. They don't need missing parents and a culture that only cares about the death and destruction of "terrorists"...when they're ignoring crime and the like here.

Cut the military buget in half, let the military deal with it. They get more than they need. Use the half you take away and use it for a national healt plan, put the insurance companys out of buseness.

"Collapse of the Soviet Union..1989-1991"..."the collapse of the Soviet Union at the end of the 1980's was a great blow to the revolutionaries. Why did it collapse? The primary causes were political and economic and they were the result of the culture of war."

this is precisely what is happening to us...we are being blindsided in the worst way by a gun loving, war waging, fear mongering imperialist, few who are telling us one thing and doing something else...we are being conned in the most evil of ways...and millions and millions of Americans are lapping up the propaganda hook, line and sinker..

It is quite possible to hate our military and yet fully believe that ordinary civilians should be armed. I am a liberal, military hating, 2nd Amendment supporter (all the other amendments, too).

"Rifles, muskets, long-bows and hand-grenades are inherently democratic weapons. A complex weapon makes the strong stronger, while a simple weapon — so long as there is no answer to it — gives claws to the weak." --George Orwell

Stop making ridiculous excuses for being a gun aficionado. Just admit you love guns.

We don't need them, and you aren't going to bring down any evil government with your peashooters. They are useless in that respect.

We have a gun loving culture in this country, and it's ridiculous to rationalize it in any other way except we have millions obsessed with guns.

doesn't anyone see that these wars are slowly draining the country of it's last breaths of solvency...you can blow the trumpets of Ronald Reagan bringing down the "wall" and causing the breakup of the former Soviet Union...but it was the war in Afghanistan that broke the financial back of the "the great Soviet Empire"...war..."s"....will do the same to us...we will be told it was something else,...big govt, entitlements, blah, blah...it is war and our war making and our inability to pay for it and our mindless addiction to the machinations of war that is bankrupting our country....we are standing by while our throats are being figuratively cut by the congress...I don't get it...I say that a lot these days...because I really don't understand why we are letting this happen to us....

F & F ~ I see it. I get it. So does everybody I know. The only people who aren't "seeing it" is the US congress. I don't understand why half of them aren't clamoring to end the wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Libya. Instead, they are slicing away at the quality of life of the American people and we are the ones who have been paying out the trillions of dollars to fund these needless, pointless 10-years and 8-years wars. And while we have paying for these wars our schools are closing, our teachers let go, our Social Services de-funded, our health care slashed, and our assistance to the most vulnerable citizens withdrawn. It's a sca n  d  a l.

It's been said before but it bears repeating — Bin Laden's plan is working. His plan was to bankrupt and destr0y our country by keeping us in a state of perpetual war and he is the only one who can say "mission accomplished."

I don't understand why we are letting this happen to us either, Ron Quintia ☮
09:39 PM on 04/12/2011
It's both Bin Laden's and the GOP's plan. The GOP wants to bankrupt the government so there will no longer be any government oversight or regulation of business. Then the US will be a company country -- like a company town, everything owned by the company.

If the corporations are using the military as hired mercenaries to protect their interests the least they can do is pay for it. Tax big business. The other option is to bring the troops home. Stop the killing. If we got out of other peoples countries things would change. As an American how would you feel if there were Chinese bases in Florida. If there were Russian aircraft carries patrolling the Gulf of Mexico? Would we allow it to happen?

If you are a service member, I appreciate your service and sacrifice.
Most of you are heroes.

That being said, we have got to drastically cut our military, by scaling back troops abroad, by accepting less recruits, by finding these people jobs in US cities where they can use their skills.

We have got to go back to our tax and spending rates from the nineties if we are ever to get out of this hole!

General Eisenhower warned us long ago about the MIC. Americas biggest enemy is its own Defense Department, contractors and its enablers.

I would like to propose a $0 budget for the military. That is absurd. My only first hand knowledge is from my "doofus" little brother who has a 20 yer military retirement but had no pay increases under Ron R. Pay the troups, please; and give them cost of living increases, please: don't cut off their VA benefits, please. Only cut off the budget in respect to the MIC suppliers (Military Industrial Complex). A tricky since the labor for the MIC votes DEM and the management votes REP.

Yes, the US continues tp pour hundreds of billions of dollars down a rathole every year, in the name of "defence"! Total idiocy. Epic stupidity. Yet the American people say very little!
