As someone who's been publishing fiction and essays about gay Jews since the mid-1980s, and speaking about this experience from Israel to Indiana, I found this essay joyous, intelligent, stirring, and powerful. Mazeltov!

Andrea, I was also privileged to be a part of your wonderful wedding. I am particularly moved to see Lev Raphael here as a commenter because I had the honor of helping to bring him to speak at Wesleyan university over twenty years ago. Lev, your words had a profound influence on my life helping me to understand deeply how questioning one's faiths and questioning one's doubts are organically intertwined. This insight has served me in my life and in my Rabbinate. Oh, and I highly recommend buying Rabbi Myers' book... if you like what she wrote here, it gets even better, more beautiful, and hilarious!

We let religious idolatry of ancient texts overcome our natural human need to grow and be better. (Like Rome allows its commitment to a seriously defective political form of autocracy to eviscerate its beliefs about peace and ecumenism.) You, on the other hand, keep your head, preserve the humanness which ought to be the concern of the religious, and let the texts speak freely. Hearing your story makes me feel like I did when I first attended Quaker Meeting. Not a sense of agreement, but of being among people who at least knew what the important questions were. And refused to allow ceremony or costume to distract from the immediate, silent business of the meeting, which is always healing.

What a lovely and joyous article.
how to live with dignity and humor, beauty and joy ... we all benefit from giving that a try, even those of us who are raging heterosexual non-denominational Christians.

I like how you add the Q to the LGBT monicker. It gives it a more assumed meaning. Best wishes.
