These people need to get a life. I'm as liberal as they come and there's nothing racist in this ad. They're just trying to sell soap. Racism exists but not in every little thing.

THIS IS THE MOST RIDICULOUS THING.............WHAT GIVES? PEOPLE NEED TO STOP PUTTING LABELS ON EVERYTHING! STOP THE WORLD, I WANT TO GET OFF!!!!

I think the only point they were attempting to convey is that women who use dove come in different shapes, sizes and shades. I just don't see anything more subliminal than the ( and, by the way. are all equally attractive ) message that is implicit in the ad. there is racism in this world, but this ad is not an example of it.

The Black woman is more vuluptuous than the other two women because that's how we come. Fine as wine.

What's missing is three blue-eyed bleached blondes with one bar of Dove soap........guess which one has the cleanest towel!

It's true and you need to do a little more research before you make a comment like this. Check the book "Brainwashed" by tom burrell. it talks about America's obsession with racist images from early america till today.

"one black, one possibly Latina and one white" -- for all you know, the one on the left could be latina too. I think they're just trying market their product to people with different skin types and tones.

for all those who see nothing "racist," i suspect that semiotics do not enter the critical analysis of text and subtext. this has nothing to do with hypersensitivity or internalized racism. it is about sending out and reinforcing stereotypical images.

where? I see three beautiful women - none of them stereotypes - standing in front of two posters, one showing dry skin, the other smooth.

your subtext is that only people who see racism in the ad know anything about semiotics.

Stereotypical images does not equal racist. If we're going by race, though, one could say that the add is clearly anti-white because black and "possibly Latina" women are overrepresented in the ad. Both are silly and, yes, hypersensitive.

one can say what one wants. but it does not necessarily carry any critical thinking. i have no idea where you live, however, here in san francisco, your "representational" argument makes no sense whatsover.

i would like to hear the argument as to why stereotypes are not racist. if they are racial stereotypes i submit they flirt with racism.

Could not have stated better myself. I am white, and I now think that I have been "offended".

be careful, typing like that can lead one to run out of butane for continued flaming.

You would if you two latino women starting from on left where the black woman is and changing into a hite woman. Open your eyes, dummy.

I'm a black woman and I don't get it. How on earth did they come up with Dove is trying to say black women can go from black to white? Really, I don't understand.
01:16 PM on 05/25/2011
Does it scrub off the extra pounds too? The black girl on the "before" side is curvier, too. Use Dove! Scrub away to reveal the thinner, whiter you! LOL! I didn't see it before and now, that's all I CAN see!

What, we don't have enough real issues with race, class & religon that we have to manufacture them? I suppose that if only the white girl was shown, Dove would have taken a hit for excluding other races?

try understanding a little semiotics. go beyond.

I didn't see that progression when I looked at the ad. Then again, being Jewish, I read it from right to left, so...

BET (Black Entertainment Television) is racist NOT this Dove ad. NAACP is racist, it only helps black people with 92% of it's donations coming from white people. This race thing has gotten SO out of hand. Black kings in Africa started the slavery of black people and sold their own people. Why are whites still being blamed for black kings selling thier own people as slaves? By the way, Dove donated 23 million dollars to the NAACP and the BLACK UNITED FUND (another ractist fund that only uses their money for black causes) and they are now being accused of being racist. This is what happens when you give, give, give. Give an inch, they take a yard. OR biting the hand that feeds you. This black against white racism is too too much!

Yes all those organizations trod on your rights as an individual, I take it? How? Were you personally sought out and they told you no we don't support white people? If it hasn't happened personally to you, then you have no right to be affronted when a certain group wants to aim at achieving their own goals. I'm sorry there IS NO SUCH THING AS WHITE RACISM... you have no right to even compare what occurred on an institutional and governmental level for hundreds of years to them to what a few organizations (started during that time I may add) are doing now. What's next are you going after the Native american tribes for their work to improve their people for "white racism" too?
04:23 PM on 05/25/2011
And I suppose these African "kings" forced the varied European slave traders into taking these people as property? The African slave trade is a complex study that the average person is not aware of, but your above statements about slavery are ridiculous. It's the TREATMENT of said slaves that is the "cause for blame" as you say. And say, nycjazzlover, do you know why the NAACP and the National Black United Fund were organized in the first place?
