Thanks for another opinion piece that rips Ryan's plan and presents NO alternative approach. This really shouldn't be difficult since you disassemble Ryan's plan piece by piece. So what is the alternative? Where? Please note that I neither support or oppose Ryan's plan. Until there is a second (or more) option I will not make a rush to judgement.

The subject of the article had to do with Republicans' objection that their plan is being misrepresented. Find an article about Democratic plans for Medicare if you want something else.

Medicare for all. Working Americans pay into medicare instead of giving our money to the for profit insurance industry. This spreads the risks and makes a single payor able to negotiate so that we all pay the same price for the same medical serivce. Now, I may pay (insurance payment included) $200 for an office visit, while the wealthier among us pay $50, and those without insurance go the the emergency room and are charged $2,000, which they can not pay and is added to everyone elses costs. Medicare for all is the solution, but reasonable people can not make this point, because the GOP intiates lies, and calls names and scares everyone. If we were all paying into the system, no profits or stock dividends to be paid out, the cost would be lower for everyone and everyone would be covered.

exactly medicare could be solvent if it took in regular premiums from everyone and let everyone in -- but instead of making medicare solvent the Ryan apologists want to make insurance companies have all those lovely medicare dollars.

Excellent post. And, on top of that repeal Bush's law forbidding us to negotiate for the least expensive medications instead of paying the highest prices in the entire world, and we could save even more money, (billions). Fanned and fav'd.

From Newsmax.com:
[Betsy] McCaughey says she strongly objects to Democratic charges that GOP Rep. Paul Ryan’s proposal to rein in entitlement spending would destroy Medicare and unfairly shift the burden to the nation’s poor and elderly.

“I was so distressed to see the vilification of Paul Ryan and the Republicans over Medicare,” McCaughey told Newsmax, “because the Obama health law decimated Medicare.

“It took $575 billion out of Medicare over the next decade, took it out of that program, and moved it to fund a vast expansion of Medicaid. It’s literally robbing Peter to pay Paul -- only it’s robbing grandma to pay Medicaid beneficiaries.”

The money was taken out of subsidies paid to Private Insurance Companies to manage Medicare, Called Medicare Advantage. So, they got paid to find ways to deny the care and medications that Seniors need, and the ADVANTAGE was all for profit to the Insurance Companies. No cuts in benefits, or increases in copayments went to the Seniors. Fox News and the GOP lie their As--- off to protect the Profits of the Insurance Industry.

Neither do the Republicans. At least the Democrats have no plan to to kill Medicare and impoverish the seniors. They are following the Rand policies of survivial of the fittest and everyone else should die. Medicare for all was the Democrat solution but that could not even be discussed because of the toxic climate created with all the "Summer of Lies" by the Repbulicans over healthcare reform. Got to protect the Huge Healthcare Corporations at all costs.

As long as the democrats, individual, and party ads stick to the facts, I say milk the poison from the Ryan plan for all it's worth. Just please don't stoop to the same ad tactics as the Republican party did on The Affordable Care Act. Don't lie or twist the truth, please, it just makes you less credible.

Republicans desperately need some Democratic fingerprints in some way or form on Medicare reform. Someone needs to shake some sense into Democratic politicians before they commit political suicide. This is what the debt ceiling vote is all about. Shock Doctrine Democrats into making a mistake.
10:53 AM on 06/09/2011
Can one only imagine if the Democrats came up with this horrible plan. You would see ads running from the GOP in the middle of an HBO movie and Fox leaders would have to take medication to keep from having a stroke talking about how the Democrats want to starve and kill grandmaw. If you do not want people to know the truth about how you really feel about the American people then just keep lying like you have the past thirty years.

Not only should the democrats strongly point out the intentions of this incompassionate, selfish and rich centered Republican party, they should also emphasize the fact that these proposed CUTS come from the same bunch that held President Obama's feet to the fire demanding an extension of the Bush tax cuts for the very rich even though 10 years of these cuts have produced NO U.S. JOBS! Instead, this money has either been squirrled away or invested overseas or in Mexico while Americans did without jobs, lost their health insurance coverage, savings and homes. Carpe diem!

Republicans to play dead on the issue of Medicare I will not donate a penny. As a matter of fact, I would patiently wait to hear the Dems reject any such "understanding" with the Republicans. Once I hear a clear and definitive rejection, only then will I contribute.

I waiting to see how Republicans will spin this. I rely on them to be better politicians, better at elections, than witless Democrats. But when it comes to ideology, they are so clearly wrong. Its a tremendously hard sell to convince Americans that the way to fix the financial mess that REPUBLICANS created is to give more money to the wealthy, and pass the costs of repairs onto (unbelievable) our senior citizens. But that's what the Ryan plan does. Its beautiful, so much so that I expect the Republicans to have some nefarious plan to spin this. Sort of 'beyond Death Panels' approach.
Republicans are great at turning an opponents message into noise. They steal phrases from the other side, and spin up tripe that is confusingly similar to the opposing message. To people who are low information voters, its enough to get them to stand on the sidelines. They clearly don't mind distorting the facts, and you can be sure theyll put real money into doing that.
They are already committed to backing the Ryan plan. That means they'll have to launch a big disinformation campaign to win. It will be worth watching!
11:37 AM on 06/09/2011
So the Democrat plan is better? Uh, they do not have a plan. They will allow Medicare to go broke. You will be forced into government health exchanges where your care will be dictated by an ACO under guidlines designed to save money. You will have no say in your own health care.

Where is it written that repairs to Medicare need to come from the Medicare budget? Is it impossible, under any scenario, that we might apply cost savings, or increased revenues from new TAXES or closed loopholes, to repair medicare? Of course its possible. Just not for Republicans.
The Republicans, out of the universe of possible solutions to this problem, go immediately and exclusively to their preferred remedy- dismantle the program. When you change it into a voucher program that only is required to pay part of the real costs, you are dismantling the core of the program. Republicans can spin this however they want, but not a single senior will buy it.
What Republicans COULD HAVE DONE but have not- is to retain medicare as it is, and repair it with revenues from rending the Bush tax cuts, cutting out tax loopholes for corporations- cutting corporate welfare. Cutting the military budget. Initiating single payer health care. Give me a minute and I'll think of a dozen other sources of revenue that would leave Medicare intact that Republicans are aware of, but have rejected.
What Republicans want is to dismantle Medicare and Social Security. Look at what they DO, not what they say. They want to make it a voucher program, and then slowly reduce that voucher amount to nothing. Watch what they DO.

It's not an attack - pointing out falsities with regards to an _issue_ is relevant to the electorate's concerns.

Attack ads are just that: nastily going after irrelevant personal issues - like an insistence that someone 'might not' have been born in the US, despite all the evidence to the contrary. That's 'attacking'.

Telling the American people about the pitfalls of a major plank in the opposition's platform is a PSA.
