Daniel Ellsberg is a national treasure, the silent conscience of the nation's founders. His efforts give voice to the Constitution, but the vast majority of the public pays no heed. It seems we will devolve into fascist tyranny entirely before the average citizen will understand what has taken place. Witness the Citizens United decision, the failing of citizen's rights and the advent of corporate personhood. When the house is looted entirely and globalization rules, it will be far too late. Don't read this as simple rhetoric. This house, our house, is on fire.

Our republic is irretrievably corrupt.

Voting, for all intents and purposes, no longer works and honestly, no longer matters. Choose from Menu A or Menu B, you’re still gonna get the mystery meat. Big Business OWNS our government and they pay off BOTH parties, so no matter who we “choose”, they always win.

That’s not a democratic republic - that’s straight up fascism.

Unfortunately, when pervasive corruption is not only entrenched but legalized, revolution is the only thing that will clean out the cesspool.

Historically, it's the only thing that ever has. The Founders understood this, declaring in the Declaration Independence that the Right of Revolution was a natural right.

The French, Russians, Egyptians, etc. came to the same conclusion.

As Abraham Lincoln explained their intention (in defending to his former law partner William Herndon his opposition to President Polk's deliberately provoked Mexican War): "The provision of the Constitution giving the war making power to Congress was dictated, as I understand it, by the following reasons: kings had always been involving and impoverishing their people in wars, pretending generally, if not always, that the good of the people was the object. This our convention understood to be the most oppressive of all kingly oppressions, and they resolved to so frame the Constitution that no one man should hold the power of bringing this oppression upon us."

As Lincoln put it, the alternative approach (which we have actually followed in
the last sixty years) "places our President where kings have always stood."
And the upshot of that undue, unquestioning trust in the president and his Executive branch is: smart people get us into stupid (and wrongful) wars, and their equally smart successors won't get us out of them.

Oh how low has the LAW has fallen!

Rewriting rules is a despot's way of breaking them.
Because of Bush's 'anything goes' Patriotic Act, Nixon's crimes now aren't.
Nixon's crimes were nothing compared to Bush's 'pre-emptive' war
so Bush changed the scoring method so he'd win no matter what he did.

So American progress is writing laws that allow atrocities
and letting mass murderers with power and influence walk free.

Be outraged!
Recognize that America is rightly viewed as a repressive regime.
Arrest the war criminals. Repeal the heinous laws.

Is there anyone in the legal system ready to fight for justice?

Granddaddy Preston Bush is surely smiling in his grave ove this particle and at the sucesses of his children in our country, what was at one time a great country, now entering the GOP and Tea Party goal of "Pottersville"

Or worse:

9. Dissent equals treason…Cast dissent as "treason" and criticism as "espionage'…

"Conservative" is not a political party, genius.
01:47 PM on 06/12/2011
So true. It didn't even take a "Watergate" moment to know George Dubai Bush lied America into war. They were even caught bribing "journalists"!!! They were caught illegally wiretapping the phone calls of EVERY US CITIZEN!!! And the far right's "love of the Constitution" was expressed in either a collective yawn, or even doubling down on how great it was that Bush wiped his backside with the Constitution.

Did you not read this article either; every president has lied to the American People (maybe Truman and Ike are the exception) and it continues to this day; the POTUS has not observed the constitution and neither party has risen to the challange on the gravity of this mistake; I didn't join in a collective yawn as both parties seemed to have done; rather I'm curious as to what feeble attempt to (other than posting this diatribe) will you make to protect the Constitution... and while I'm ancient; I'm still: Semper Fidelis!

Glenn Greenwald:

When Dennis Kucinich earlier this month introduced a bill to compel the withdrawal of all American troops from Libya within 15 days, the leadership of both parties and the political class treated it the way they do most of Kucinich's challenges to establishment political orthodoxy: they ignored it except to mock its unSeriousness. But a funny thing happened: numerous liberal House Democrats were joined by dozens of conservative GOP members to express support for his bill, and the White House and GOP House leadership became jointly alarmed that the bill could actually pass; that's why GOP House Speaker John Boehner introduced a Resolution purporting to rebuke Obama for failing to comply with the War Powers Resolution, but which, in fact, was designed to be an utterly inconsequential act. Its purpose was to protect Obama's war by ensuring that Kucinich's bill failed; the point of Boehner's alternative was to provide a symbolic though meaningless outlet for those House members angry over Obama's failure to get Congressional support.

Our Founders sought to prevent this. Article I, section 8 of the Constitution, for the first time in constitutional history, put the decision to go to war (beyond repelling sudden attacks) exclusively in the hands of Congress, not the president. But every president since Harry Truman in Korea–as the Pentagon Papers demonstrated up through LBJ, but beyond them to George W. Bush and Barack Obama–has violated the spirit and even the letter of that section of the Constitution (along with some others) they each swore to preserve, protect and defend.

Eisenhower knew what was the correct change in direction, and JFK heard that message, and tried to change it.

C'mon, John.  Be fair.  He was a criminal, but he was also important for the things he DID do.  Establishing relations with China and the NEPA to mention a few.

In the end, he was a deeply insecure and disgraced man.  And he deserved it.  And I have ZERO pity.  But history demands a full accounting of his complexity.

They key to cleaning up our government and giving it back to the people is to defund it. A massive tax revolt by a large majority of tax payers would be what is needed.

There is no way the government could operate let alone prosecute many many millions of Americans.

Defund certain parts of it. One of the main reasons for our economic mess is that the parts of government that are designed to keep the private sector in check and protect the public were defunded, while the military budget exploded.

I see your point: it has to be a massive refusal to pay, across the board. Trouble is they'd make an example of somebody and I just KNOW whose name would come up. Same reason I never win at Bingo. It'd just be my luck. Still, it's a possibility. Isn't that what brought down Louis XVI?
