Hope my sister and hubby are OK - after their French vacation. Maybe Tolkein has something to do with all these calamaties in NZ!!! I expect we will see a Steven Spielberg epic about it all soon.

Only minor injuries have been reported so they should be fine. Maybe it's Sauron stirring :o

No...it's their history.

Same as drought, floods, and tornadoes in the American South.

With all these quakes in Japan, New Zealand, Chile, Indonesia - it's just a matter of time before a significant quake hits California... We've been fortunate so far, but time is running out.

I live in San Jose, CA about 50 miles south of San Francisco, folks keep telling me how wrong I am, but with all of the volcanic and quake activity we are seeing around the Pacific basin, the "Ring of Fire", I would urge that we all take care to be prepared.

Meantime here our state government is considering selling off quite a few million dollars worth of feild hospital equipment and other emergency medical supplies to save having to pay the warehouse costs...go figure.

Hello neighbor. Former San Jose here, but now in the Sierras. You are right. The North American west coast needs to be prepared. It's like squeezing a balloon ... events along the Ring of Fire can have inter-relational cause/effect elsewhere on the ring. Sadly we have dense population above faults in the SF Bay Area and it won't be pretty.

Earthquake experts have searched in vain for causal, inter-relational (sp?), or coincident relatinships among earthquakes on the ring of fire. Earthquakes are coming for us in California, but there's no evidence that ones in Japan or New Zealand have any effect on us.

Had a very tense half hour trying to contact my younger brother and older half-brother who are concrete cutters working in the Red Zone.

Safe and sound thankfully.

Christchurch has had enough; when is it going to stop...
04:07 AM on 06/13/2011
Good they're alright, they evacuated the Red Zone after the 5.5 thankfully

A sixth of magnitude 6.0 hit at 2.20pm this afternoon (Monday - NZST) = about 21:20 (9.20pm) Sunday EST. A number reported injured.

A new fault was found within the last two weeks which could produce a magnitude 7 fault, according to scientists in New Zealand.

It's got the feel about it that another big one could come (or more than one), a theory is that there is pressure in the system that is not known about, that something else is in play. We shall see in time.

I remember it was quite devestating to them the last time, and hardly covered here for it's size. I hope them well, and that this wasn't too damaging.

I don;t think it's too bad this time for the center of the city where the most vulnerable buildings are has been cordoned off

Are you in NZ'ed? It's my favorite places and as one of the larger cities I really liked christchurch, but queenstown is way more my pace. I really enjoyed the both islands and the people are great.

Queenstown is number 1 for sure, a very good time to be had there
