This is going to come up with the debt ceiling talks as it and all subsidy (I mean that bad old oil too) should be eliminated. This Norquist clown needs to take a walk.

Take a look at who is assailing Scott Brown for breaking with Norquist to vote for cloture: Massachusetts Democratic Party spokesman Kevin Franck!

Both parties are rotten from the inside. Reid rallied the Democrats against the bill because a Republican offered the amendment- so that Dianne Feinsten can bring one up for a vote next week. It might happen, or not, or it might be a different amendment altogether.

For the conservatives that do not support new tax regardless of the situation why don't you also go to your boss at work and sign a pledge for him to never increase your salary despite the increasing cost of living and the pile of debt you have.

Norquist An unelected, never elected person with no real knowledge of economics is in a position to control and hold elected officials hostage because of his ideologue mantra that the government can run without revenue, just cut all programs he does not like.

As with many Repubs, a subsidy to oil, ethanol and farms is good but a subsidy to those who need it to survive is bad.
03:55 PM on 06/15/2011
Here's something that has to be explained.

Republicans have claimed that the purpose of tax cuts is, in part, to deprive the government of revenue so that it cannot "spend;" increasing revenue to address the deficit would just lead to more "spending," so there's no point in raising taxes in the name of deficit reduction.

But they have also claimed that tax cuts -increase- government revenue.

So which is it?

Moderation in ALL things

They have flipped the coin in the air, and so long as it is spinning, they think they are "smart". But soon that coin will drop, like a lead balloon. Only, by then, the piper will have collected his due, and there will be nowhere to turn!

it's Grover Norquist here thats the hypocrite. This is welfare for mega corn farmers.

Or socialist policiies as the Republicans like to say.
Don't rebuke them, they are doing the right thing. It's Reid that is in the wrong.

Ethanol subsidies are another issue altogether, but I'm very, very pleased to see the GOP growing a spine for once in the face of special interests. I half expected to see a pig fly by my window when I heard they were telling Norquist to shove it.

No.
Entitlements are something you and I have paid for already, therefore we are "entitled" to them.

This is welfare.
03:25 PM on 06/15/2011
The GOP needs to eliminate all farm subsidies if they are truly serious about needing to make sacrifices so that the budget get balanced. By keeping farm subsidies, oil tax credits, & trying to expand the defense budget, while cutting all other domestic spending, they just show they are pandering to their special interests. That, and there are several GOPe Congressmen who make $$$$ off their farm welfare receipts--they support cutting everything but gets them a large federal check in the mail!
03:18 PM on 06/15/2011
The Democrats voted against this on procedural grounds, even though they mostly agree with ending the subsidies? - WTH?

For the love of America, get rid of the bad Democrats. We have a Democratic President who is essentially a 1980s Republican. We have a Majority Leader who weak when it matters, but decides to stand up for himself over a procedural matter, when it means killing an Amendment that most Democrats support.

I don't want to vote for a Republican. But Democrats do not deserve my vote. Damned if we do, damned if we don't.

Good for you that you noticed what Reid is up to. He does this kind of thing all the time.
He fills the tree with useless amendments so that no one else can offer any he doesn't approve of.
He rails against republicans and says they filibuster all the time, but he invokes Rule 22 on his own bills which require 60 votes for cloture (to procede to the real vote) instead of allowing a majority vote which only requires 51. He's as dirty as they come, and I'm not a Republican.

Every single republican who signed Norquist no tax pledge should have to face their constituency and explain why they violated their oath of office and signed away their Congressional authority, responsibilities and loyalty to the Constitution to a lobbyist.

For a better understanding of Norquist's role in the flow of events, read Naomi Klein's "The Shock Doctrine." A brief overview can be found at: http://www.alternet.org/teaparty/151209/the_gop?page=entire

Be sure to vote them all out. . Register as a Republican to get Huntsman or Ron Paul in the Primary. Democrats aren't going to allow a primary of Obama, but I can't vote for Goldman Sachs.
