But the document also tells missionaries and evangelists to put a stop to "inappropriate methods of exercising mission by resorting to deception and coercive means."

Few hundred years late but great letter.

LOL. Guidelines...it is not a "position" paper.

In other words, these are just suggestions. Similar to the way they read bibles.

Now where were these new guidelines during the Crusades or the Spanish Inquisition? There has been alot of evil done in the name of religion. Problems start when people use their religion as their weapon. When Evangelical Christians constantly thump their Bibles and live their personal lives like the Devil himself, why would anyone want to join their religion?

I have noticed something about American Evangelical Churches. These are usually white Evangelical Christians and these are the ones that think it is somehow their godly right to go into a third world country and adopt any child they want and bring him/her back to the USA. I am specifically remembering that church group that went to Haiti after the earthquake and got themselves into legal trouble trying to take kids out of that country. Now on what planet does it make it godly for some white people to go to Haiti to take their kids out of their own homeland and bring them to the USA? I've never understood that philosophy and I've seen these white Evangelicals go into other countries such as Guatemala, Poland, Russia and other places. If God had wanted those children with an American family, then wouldn't they have been born in the USA?
11:20 PM on 06/28/2011
There are thousands of Evangelicals from South Korea and Brazil and Nigeria who go to places like India,China, and the Middle East to share the gospel. Remember the Korean missionaries held hostage in Afghanistan years back? White Americans are increasingly becoming a minority not only in Evangelicalism, but also in evangelism.

Buddhism grew by the example of the buddhists' lives. Of course not all religions have been so successful in having people live spiritual lives that actually speak for themselves and thus don't need rhetoric. When rhetoric converts more than your exemplary life, perhaps the rhetoric is harm. But does christianity or islam really care about the means? Which christians or muslims were persecuted by their own for lying, killing, or stealing from non-christians? Any history of such? hariaum

This is definitely a step in the correct direction! Christianity and the Gospel mission have been repeatedly damaged and sabotaged by those whose evangelical fervor unhinges their behavior and actions from the love, care and respect demanded by the true Gospel of Christ. I am praying for the wisdom contained in this coalition to work its way down to the grassroots level groups in the field!!!

Now how are these guidelines going to help when we have Evangelical Christian politicians, church leaders and televangelists talking about how the Christians need to have a holy war with Muslims? What about when the US politicians always take Israel's side in any dispute and call the Palestinians names? While these new guidelines might make a few people feel better about themselves, in the real world - the bad apples will continue to be bad.

I don't condone missionary work.
03:09 PM on 06/28/2011
No, they ONLY need to share their spiritual life with those who ask about it specifically.

It's called bad manners to do anything else. And if nobody asks...then nobody asks. Too bad for the missionaries.
03:22 PM on 06/28/2011
Which would be totally morally indefensible if they actually believe in the content of the Bible and its call to offer salvation to everyone.

I have no idea whether they do or not but your idea is totally incompatible with Christian faith.

The Christian Bible only tells the followers of Christ to live by example. Followers are told to share their faith but where does the Bible say it is okay to shove it down someone's throat?

Love is always the answer.
03:33 PM on 06/28/2011
That depends on your view of what "offering salvation" means. I'm a Christian and will mention God somewhat with non-Christians but won't start interrogating them about what they believe unless it is brought up by them. If Christians focused as much on showing love to others as Jesus did, people will naturally ask what makes us different. THEN we share.

“If I want someone to hear the good news of Jesus Christ, I’m not going to go to that person and start by insulting his culture, insulting his practices, insulting his views of God. On the contrary, you EARN the right to share your faith in building genuine friendships first. And you maintain those friendships even if beliefs remain unchanged.” ~ Rev. Bob Roberts Jr.
