HELLOOOO you critics, don't be so emotional and naive:

The FBI was gathering intelligence. to see whether these guys posed a threat, if they were about to firebomb a gay bar or some military function. You really think that the FBI is sympathetic to a bunch of whack jobs boycotting funerals of US fallen soldiers? Come on.

"Know thy Enemy" WBC were stupid and vain enough to accept the invite. I say clever FBI.
We need to know what these WBC whacks are up to and this is a good way of finding out. This is government at work. Doing a good job. Thank you.

The members of this "church" are stupid, but probably not stupid enough to tell the FBI if they were planning violent action. It would seem the more reliable way to obtain this information would be to infiltrate the organization or just good, old-fashioned syping. The FBI dropped the ball on this one.

What do you know exactly what they were doing? Maybe they were building trust? The FBI are not stupid... we have way too little info to judge this situation. It's just the usual HP sensationalism...

Totally agree - the FBI is just doing their job. I bet they speak to former Al Quada insiders and other fringe groups to try and get a handle on their motivations etc. I think that this group craves credibility and unfortunately the backlash is all about giving these nuts credibility bad PR but the right idea.

Not one penny of tax dollars should be spent on Westboro bigots. They should not be accomodated for anything that involves taxpayer funded organizations such as the FBI. However, if the intent of the FBI is how to stop this group that has turned justice on its head, that's another matter.

This is an excellent article about the Westboro Baptist Church. Please, read.

This article was highly suspicious of the Westboro Baptist Church and believed they were being used in order to move law to be decided by the Supreme Court just as was done with Citizen's United, who turns out employs the wife of Justice Thomas.

--Isn't that funny? They are called Citizen's United, but the only thing they united was the 86% against the Supreme Court decision in their favor.

In the article below, the author believed the Westboro Baptist Church was being used in order to move law and decide law that would impinge on free speech in order to take more control of the internet. This was, however, before the uprisings in the Middle East and Wisconsin, and would have been on the heels of the CItizen's United decision which was so thoroughly reviled. These decisions may have affected the follow through on the decision that was originally intended.

if they cannot show that they hired similar loonies then that is a thousand times more disturbing because it means that "for training" is their way of saying indoctrinating into an extreme religious fundamentalism cult.
