Very fortunate that the arrow was not poison-tipped.

ah yes, the adventurers in unexplored paradise & BAM, reality of uninvited savagery destroys the splendor of the moment. It seems there's nowhere on the globe one is safe now..
02:52 PM on 07/05/2011
True, there is no place safe anymore in the world, especially foreign countries who absolutely hate foreigners, especially Americans !!! It's time to vacation at home, perhaps go to Vegas if you want to experience a foreign vacation with it's many cultural theme parks that simulate these countries...

PNG does not hate Americans. Most people really like Americans as they like any other tourists. These people weren't Americans, one was from New Zealand and the other French and they were attacked by a criminal not a country. Remember when the foreign tourists were being killed in Florida. It's not because American hate Germans, it's because there are criminals everywhere. Do you think you can't be killed in Vegas. I'm pretty sure you have a better chance of being attacked in Las Vegas than remote Papau New Guinea.

these were not Americans.
jungles and rain forest have never been safe.
have you ever been to a "cultural theme park" in Las Vegas?

"It seems there's nowhere on the globe one is safe now.."

If you want safety try Oz, New Zealand, Chile, Polynesia. I could go on. But if you are up north in Oz seriously watch out for the saltwater crocodile. Salties are wicked bad news. They will even stalk you inland. Bad medicine, Kemosabe.

Not news, really. A crime happened... it happens everywhere.

The arrow is a salacious detail but really, just attempted murder & attempted rape. But how else are we suppossed to know how primitive PNG is - arrows... wow!!

He was lucky they only had arrows. To me it seems the word crime is not quite appropriate as the tribesmen where just acting according to the laws of the jungle.

these kids should have stuck to the beach resort instead and leave the "encounter" experiences to the qualified anthropologists.

Wake up children its not all discovery channel out there.

Considering the guy had previously been imprisoned fro rape, it does not seem that it's OK 'according to the laws of the jungle'.

I imagine Papuans, like other human beings the world over, proscribe rape and murder. They're people not chimpanzees.

This reminds me of that Grizzly Man story - you would think everyone would know that if you hike through a field of bulls, you'll probably get gored. This idea also applies to bears, elephants, alligators, wild people, Appalachians, and a lot of other things as well.

But it seems that there are a lot of people out there who think that either a) the entire world is as safe as Disneyland, or b) they're personally so amazing, nothing could possibly harm them.

Sounds like one of those horrible (and racist) cannibal movies that use to come out of Italy in the early eighties.

I read your post "movies . . . . Italy" and involuntarily I started humming the theme song to "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly."

Yes. Now she has practical experience about one aspect of tribal life.

There's nothing tribal about rape. That is an international issue. Not something that only happens by tribal men.
02:25 PM on 07/05/2011
actually there is something very tribal about it. It's probably one of the most rudimentary & seemingly natural instincts of a man that true civilization has confronted & won over in a civil society. Basic instincts probably still exist in a region like the jungle of new Guinea..
02:27 PM on 07/05/2011
ya, Im pretty sure murder and rape happen even in the most "civil" countries and areas

Yes, because the rest of the country is so civilized. Blah.

If you're going to meander through remote and wild jungles, make sure you are able to run really fast and duck at the same time.

Dodge ball lessons come into mind. :-)

If you stereotype them as violent and shy away, they will call you a racist. If you go there and are attacked, they will tell you that those white people had no business being there. (see Mr. Sandoval's comment below)
