Facebook has a number of groups seeking marriage equality in various states including California and Pennsylvania. New York's leaders have shown true courage and compassion for gay and lesbian couples who are seeking the same rights. May all the soon to be newlywed couples be as happy years down the road as they will be tomorrow! Congratulations to them all! Now, back to work in states like California and Pennsylvania.

Looking at that photo, one has to wonder why those two old gals being happy together and wanting to have a legally binding commitment/relationship is such a threat to anyone.

It sure isn't affecting my marriage one iota.

Said short; said well. Maybe except the "old" part. It's all relative to our ages. And if this is your picture, you are young. From my older 60's perspective, Kitty and Cheryle are still in the mid-stages of life, and have a long way to go. Their happiness is visible and I wish them many more years of life together.

F & F for your comment.

LOL - That's my wife in the avi. I'm a boomer, just like you.

I was thinking of using "middle-aged", but my point was to suggest benevolence/harmlessness more than age.

Fanned back.

Fanned fanned fanned. I've posted similar commentary on many occasions. My husband and I are rock solid. If ANYBODY else's marriage somehow impacts on my own, it's nobody'd fault but mine.

I don't think it's right to refer to these two lovebirds as "Buffalo women." sure, they might not be fashion model pretty, but there is no reason for that. it is just so wrong on so many levels. i have half a mind to ring whoever wrote this article's doorbell and run.

Have you noticed that those that knock how people look never use a picture of themselves in their lead-in?
11:22 AM on 07/23/2011
I wonder why they didn't post my comment?

All I said was that there needs to be more high profile gay male marriages visible to the masses, because that's what people are really afraid of, and they won't see how ridiculous their fears are until they're confronted with them.

There are a lot of people who go to great lengths to insulate themselves from the very thought that gay people even exist.

I don't agree. In fact, male gays have constantly predominated in the public eye until just recently. We lesbians have been completely invisible.

Today we see lesbian comedians, lesbian news anchors and radio hosts, lesbian musicians, lesbian roles on TV and in film, and even photos of lesbians getting married or marching in parades. I welcome that change--because invisibility is never good for minorities.

There is a certain truth that throwing "shocking" things (like drag queens or half-naked guys in pink feather boas) in fearful people's faces can have a positive effect over time, by desensitizing them. But bigots also need to see the lesbian side of the story, which is quieter and more subdued but still an awfully important part of the story.

I'm happy for them, but why is it always a lesbian couple that gets married first whenever marriage gets legalized in a new state?

I know they'll be in the media a lot and straight people prefer to think of lesbians together rather than gay men, but that's just it. People aren't voting against gay marriage because they hate the idea of two women being together. Let's face facts, people deny rights to gays as an extension of their prejudice against gay men.

People need to see a happy, high-profile gay male married couple in the media. They need to see it until they're desensitized to it. Straight people lead insular lives, marginalizing gay men out of their minds and day to day lives. They would prefer not to think about it.

but minds won't change until they are confronted with what they hate, over and over, until they have to admit to themselves that their prejudices were misguided.

So you believe that this story should have been quashed, and maybe the reporter should have been ordered to go out and locate and report on "the first gay males married" instead of "the first married"?

Or maybe Kitty and Cheryle should have been told to wait their turn so some guys could get in line first and really shock people.
