This is a misunderstanding of the norwegian criminal system. He will most likely spent the rest of his life in prison (danish: Forvaringsdom or Forvaringsstraf).

Oh my the hypocrisy. When someone says that terrorists are muslim, liberals say that's wrong to say that about muslims as a whole but when someone SAYS they're a Christian and Christians as a whole,Fox news and Tea Partiers get blamed.UNBELEIVABLE.

Why didn't you say this to all the idiots blaming Christians and Fox news?
08:52 PM on 07/23/2011
If I listened to Fox all day, I'd go wacko. Lots of hate speech on that show. They show many "debates" which are just talking heads yelling at each other. Maybe that's why people blame Fox. I dunno. I no longer have cable.

I was ranting on the recent Wilders thread about how his words instill fear, and fear breeds prejudice, and prejudice breeds violence. And violence breeds more violence. And that eventually someone subscribing to that rhetoric will commit violence.

You don't need religion, you just need to be afraid.

So are we gonna label Wilders, Spencer and Geller as the instigators now? What about the freedom of speech dealio?

Admittedly, it's too early to say anything. But I have always had concerns about people spreading hate under freedom of speech. Sure, you should be able to criticize an ideology. But a rhetoric that, no matter the factual basis, extrapolates the truth to the point of instilling fear, can not do any good, ever.

Agreed.

I've said the same.

That's the thing that gets me the most --- professional anti-Muslims such as Wilders, Spencer and Geller are painting a picture of Muslims that is *not true*.

The recent tragedy in Norway shows what can happen when people of a certain psychological profile believe these untrue assertions.

If someone is just stating facts, that's one thing.

But if someone is painting a false picture of an entire religion that directly inspires others to kill --- I see that as a very big problem; that's Defamation and/or Libel (written Defamation), as I understand those terms -- and those things are illegal, at least in the U.S.

On the contrary, as an atheist myself, I feel it's perfectly legitimate to criticize a belief system - especially one which doesn't recognize equality irrespective of gender and sexual orientation.

There are legions of Left-wingers who make vocal and strong criticisms of Christian fundamentalism, and yet I don't see you making even token mention of them. What if some Left-wing nut opened fire on a Church? Would you make the same disclaimer then? If so, then why wait for it to happen before doing so?

Fear is in the eye of the beholder. What scares one person is simply disregarded by another. Limbaugh has his frightened followers, while others laugh at him. It is always difficult to draw a line against hate speech that does not also limit truth speech.

12:08 AM on 08/08/2011
As it turns out, after reading this guy's writings, he uses the word "christian" to describe any Caucasian of European decent. But of course that's not how it was reported... and that's why Christians are defensive. Its that dishonesty problem in the media again. Consider the Fort Hood murders... they were not reported as being done by a Muslim. There are still articles that don't mention the fact. Yet the murder's religion was his clearly stated motivation. See the difference?
07:12 PM on 07/23/2011
The pathetic aspect of this is that he portrays himself to be a Christian crusader ,anti-Islam etc in his video Knights Templar 2083. But he ended up murdering his own people in cold blood, young people, innocent people, many of whom were probably Christian. He is as bad and as evil as all other religious fundamentalists who use terror to promote their creed.
12:11 AM on 08/08/2011
Its now clear that he used the word christian to describe any Caucasian of European decent. Nothing to do with Christianity as a religion. Think anyone will print a retraction?

Jesus would be castigated by today's fundies as a socialist liberal. He dared speak without charging a fee and gave away fish and loaves...and worse still, cured the sick and dying even though they had no healthcare plan.

If there is any remaining confusion about what this person believed, his vision for the world, and his mission, read the 1,500 page manifesto that he wrote and published.

WOW.

Got it.

Thanks for this, very much.

The only other references I'd seen to this document were in Norwegian, so I had visions of running random parts of the document through Google Translate, to try to find interesting and pertinent info ... but ... thankfully, it's in English.

And based on a very cursory initial review, it appears to be quite disturbing, per the combination of intelligence of organization and presentation, combined with incorrectness of views, and factual misunderstanding, specifically related to Islam and Muslims.

yes apparently he wrote it in English, with the hope of attracting an international audience. He even came up with an Anglicized name for himself.
01:46 AM on 07/24/2011
"Incorrectness of view" implies that there is a singular view that is correct. It is all just opinions after all, albeit his was clearly far from the norm, and as you wrote very disturbed. Among other things he tries to predict what the media will brand him - pedophile, homosexual, thief, racist, unintelligent, jokel, the worst monster since WW2 etc. and it seems obvious that he's doing it to make him seem more intelligent by pointing it out before the media does, as well as to shield himself from the accusations later by being able to say "I knew they were going to call me that".

He's cold and calculating, down to every last detail a complete psychopat

WHY WOULD ANYONE READ THAT?

To see how what happens when people believe things that other people make up about Muslims.

Breivik actually thinks the religion of Islam itself is evil, and a threat. He feels that Muslims are "taking over" in Europe, and that they should be deported. He actually believes the wildly false assertions of people like Geert Wilders, Robert Spencer and Pamela Geller, and spends close to 1,500 pages describing how much he agrees with them.

Can you imagine?

Excellent web page of links to U.S. government reports, many of which are related to terrorism and extremism. Reports on right-wing extremism and Muslim extremism are included.

For anyone who wants to see some serious, credible reports on terrorism and related dynamics, you might want to check it out:

So?

Not unexpected.

Some extremists wreak havoc on innocent people in the name of various political situations and ideologies, and rightwing extremism, which tends to flourish at times of rapid change, and in bad economies, when people feel "our way" is threatened -- is a big enough concern that DHS (Department of Homeland Security) saw fit to do a separate report on it.
