Abstract art, like analytical philosophy became ivory tower inside jokes.

Well, I'll tell you, I was a neighbor when Carl Andre pushed his wife Ana out that window -- splat! -- and I didn't think much of him as an artist even before that. Sorry, but I just don't care for "artists" who push their wives out of windows, especially when their so-called art consists of piling bricks on the floor. The fact that his career countinues to flourish unabated is disgusting but predictable.

So if his art had been better, you wouldn't have minded so much? :)

From this group I would pick Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. At least both of them are equally well known and each has created a distinctive unforgettable work.

My favorite art couple are Niki de Saint Phalle and Jean Tinguely. They cooperated on many art projects and supported each other without one being stronger thant the other.they complemented each other.

As another commenter pointed out most of the couples you are showing were not equal, most of the time the women supported the career of their men and put her own career on the backburner..

Yeah, the standards for this list were really high.

Big fan of Dali. Visited the Dali Museum in St. Petersburg, FL shortly after it opened in '82. Seeing the huge size of the masterworks was quite interesting. His unusual use of Gala's image is always intriguing, sometimes comical. Wish I could get there again as I understand it is either in a new facility now or the original space has been expanded.

I would love to see his home, which is now a museum too. I have to make it to Europe.

Georgia O'Keeffe certainly never subjugated her art to that of her husband's, as did so many other female artists. She was always her own person. Originally Alfred Stieglitz was her mentor---without him pushing her career she may never have realized her capabilities but over time she probably become the more famous. Of course, she outlived him by many years and in time he may come to be the more important artist.
