I NATURALLY ASSUME BOTH OF THESE GOVERNMENTS ARE CORRUPT ENOUGH TO BROKER A DEAL THAT'S GOOD FOR THEM PERSONALLY , BUT SUCKS FOR THE MAJORITY . PUTIN LOOKS LIKE A MOB BOSS SURROUNDED BY THUGS . THE CITIZENS OF BELARUS PROBABLY DO NOT WANT A MERGER WITH PUTIN THE DICTATOR.

I read they were faking, lying low, while they got the west's technology to make notebook computers from the Regan deal, as the wall came down. We gave them chip making machines. Now it looks like they are going back to the empire. Next, religion clamp down, as they try to get the religions they allowed back out of the country maybe.
Be hard to take East Germany back, so maybe they will leave some alone.

None Dare Call It Treason, 25 Years Later, is a book by John Stormer. In it he says the communists never went away, they are just waiting to come back. We helped them because as one of our presidents said, "We broke them from being communists, now we cannot let the Russian people suffer economically, so lets build them up again". Surprise, they did not respond like the Germans, Japanese, and Italians. Never trust the bolsheviks.

That's what happened in the early 20th century, Russia 'merged' with a large group of Eastern Eurpean countries. However it was done differently then. After the troops and tanks rolled into and through Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Hungary, Czhekoslovakia et al and the area became the USSR(Union of Soviet Socialist Republics) these occupied countries suffered treatment that rivaled the Holocaust and lasted much longer. Are we going to see it again?

Putin is home sick for the old USSR and wants to pices it together again like some rotted frankenstein. Friendsly talks in deed....bah

Most people under 30 can't understand the USSR or the tyranny that it imposed on most of Europe. If they could recall Putin's recent invasion of Georgia and multiply that by 1000.
Hopefully we aren't witnessing the return of the Beast.

Russian invasion of Georgia ? If you recall the Georgians were shelling the capital of Ossetia and they asked for help from Russia. The Russians went in just far enough to stop the shelling and left. Never dropped a bomb, never took the Capital. If it had been the U,S, we would have left Georgia in ruins.

Might as well they are just a parasite now , we would not gain anything , they have nothing to offer.
04:37 PM on 08/01/2011
You are very misinformed. In fact Canada is a treasure house of energy, water, timber, mineral and food wealth. Their economy and currency will gain much strength in the future supplying us and the rest of the world with what we need. Plus they are our close friends and allies.

Yhey should want to see how much in taxes a canadian pays for crap health care.
05:09 PM on 08/01/2011
If I was a Canadian I would not want to merge with the United States, with all the problems and nutjobs that are walking about down south. No way would I want to be apart of the American establishments, and nonsense politics. Besides we got the best health care in North America, and why would we throw that all away? You got to be nuts to do that stupid act. No, Canada will remain as a seperate nation-state in North American--no deal. Thank you for asking....

Slowly but surely, he wants a return to the USSR ... one country at a time. Doesn't sound good at all.

Compared to the chaotic sewer that Russia has become, many Russians do at least vaguely laong for the order and discipline of the Soviet days.

Yes ,we all desire that Ukraine, Belarus and Kazakhstan form a new Union, the fall of the USSR unleashed the Armenia-Azeri war, Chechen-Russian war, Georgia-Ossetia wars, corruption, poverty, 20 years have waited for this news to come.
04:25 PM on 08/01/2011
And let's not forget the many many millions of their own innocent people killed under Soviet rule....do you also desire more of that?

Obviously you have not read a newspaper for about twenty years. Russia is no longer Communist. Very Capitalistic these days.
04:11 PM on 08/01/2011
Pardon my skepticism. The "Soviet Union" would better have been called the "Soviet Empire." All those states were freed when the place imploded but I'll just bet folks like Putin have been biding their time and regaining the strength to reabsorb as much as they can. Remember the attack on Georgia? How about Russian influence over Ukraine? And other small neighboring states most Americans have never heard of, like Moldova and Azerbaijan. They didn't voluntarily give up the republics, they were simply unable to hold onto them, and anybody who thinks they have given up their aspirations to reassemble their empire is whistling past the graveyard, IMO.

Did you notice "Kremlin youth camps?" These are propoganda camps modeled after the Hitler Youth Camps. They are virulently nationalistic. The early graduates are now in the Russian military. And, when it comes to territorial acquisitions, nothing is voluntary. If there is disagreement, then Putin simply poisons them. Being a Lt. Colonel in the KGB means he nows how, and undoubtedly personally did, kill people. He also subscribes to the old adage/dream of having, and I hope I remember the quote correctly, Russian soldiers cool their boots in the Indian Ocean. Never, and I mean never, trust Putin or anyone allied with him. You do so at your own peril. This man is dangerous, pure, plain and simple. Larry

Yeah, but the reset button Hillary Clinton gave him has changed all that, right? And for sure he wants to avoid unkind words from Obama, The Professor of the United States!
05:11 PM on 08/01/2011
No, Stalin had youth camps before Hitler.
05:40 PM on 08/01/2011
Yes he did, and killed 6-10 million Ukrainians in one year (1932-1933) and killed countless other Slavs throughout his tenure.

Who cares? Let Russia merge with Belarus. The Cold War was a joke anyway and no one was actually gonna bomb the other. It's all politics.
04:34 PM on 08/01/2011
A joke? How hard should we have laughed when Stalin took over the free nations of Eastern Europe by force of arms at the end of WW II? I think there were at least 8 to 10 of them....ha ha ha!

Read a history book. Those nations were allied with Germany they were part of the invasion of Russia and Russia won the war. Of course they occupied them.
05:06 PM on 08/01/2011
How close was Kruschev to launching during the Bay of Pigs? No one really knows. Luckily he blinked because the US Navy wasnt going to back down in the Caribbean. We were all very lucky, and it was no joke.
03:49 PM on 08/01/2011
We really do not know what the situation is in Belarus. From the article it doesn't sound so good. For some of the republics the split from SSR has been good. For others not so good. So maybe mergeing is a good idea. They know more about it than we do. Capitalism is better than communism not matter how you cut it. I hope they find a solution.
06:21 PM on 08/01/2011
My issue isn't the merging (I am only a upset about a recently independent nation going back to dependency with another nation that has scorned them in the past) so much as the fact that Putin wants it. I like Putin as a man, but as a leader he scares me tremendously. And I worry that he might become another Stalin in the future. I really wish there was another solution to the Lukashenko problem.
