To those who don't believe in global warming, this is just the tip of the iceberg (no pun intended).

A picture's worth a thousand words, no???

Its summer in Alaska sport. Things are naturally melting. However, down at the south pole everything is freezing.

You call yourself "Youre (sic) wrong again?" Well, this time, you win the prize!

While it may be summer in Alaska and "things" may be naturally melting, it's no big secret that the melting of ice is becoming a serious threat to the polar bears' survival.

Sport yourself, sport!

There'll be plenty more sand to bury your head in here pretty soon. That should comfort you.
"The scientists are wrong,The scientists are wrong, The scientists are wrong, The scientists are wrong" Keep repeating and it'll all be OK.
or you could use " It's only a movie, It's only a movie, It's only a movie"
if that floats your boat instead.

No...its not. This happens EVERY year during the "warming" season. It happens in the colder months too due to weight and gravity. Ice accumulates to the point that it cant hold itself and it breaks. I dont believe in GW either. It is a FACT that there are seasons among seasons. And some winters are colder than others. Or warmer...research it please.

The problem with climate change deniers is that everything is about what you believe. No evidence, information, facts or proof to the contrary can budge your belief. Climate change is not like religion it is a scientific fact. Here's a clue for you. Forget the messanger (Gore) and just look at the facts. Nah, why confuse yourelf with facts your mind is made up.

I'll bet Al Gore is excited over this. He gets that way in the summer months. During winter he hibernates.

I hope Georgia and Texas enjoyed those snow storms earlier this year, they may start having to hibernate like Canadians in the future.

Melting ice has opened up new shipping channels for the Russians.I guess thats calving and not warming also.No man is so blind as he who refuses to see.

Funny what is not accounted for is all that Russian ice breaking that occurs all year in the artic. I wonder how much that effects the salinity of the water.

Boat should be fined for having an engine so out of tune it belches black smoke like that.

It's a diesel. When you gun the engines, you waste fuel through the stacks.

My father is a captain on the coast--when I am staying with him I sleep on his diesel powered sailboat feet from the engine. I know its a diesel I grew up on an island. Just because its a diesel does not mean it has to belch that much black smoke. It means the engine needs work.

Nimrods.

Whomever says climate change isn't happening hasn't seen a glacier fall apart and melt away. :(
04:38 PM on 08/10/2011
I'm not sure if anyone is doubting climate change. The climate has changed too many times to count since the Earths formation. What people differ on is what is causing the change. Temperatures on some of the other planets in our solar system has risen as well over the last decade.

The changes humans have caused in the last 10,000 years are amazing and have accelerated exponentially. Europe used to be all forest from the Pyrenees to the Urals, America was all forest from Florida to the arctic circle and from the Atlantic to the Mississippi. In recent 100 years we have chopped down over 50% of the World Rain forests, etc. Just this one change, the massive destruction of one of the most vital climate regulating features of the planet will cause climate change. Ad to this the effects of the industrial revolution and industrial scale agriculture — no sane person can have any doubt that we have a very large footprint.

I don't know who ran this tourboat company, but they should be sued. I have been to the Sawyer glacier and it also let loose a large iceberg while we watched. No one was hurt or even scared. We were just amazed at the awesomeness of the event. Why? Our tourboat didn't take us so near the base of the glacier. He told us that staying a safe distance away from the glacier in the event the glacer did calve was required. Didn't this tourboat company heed their own rules?

I was on an Alaskan cruise about three years ago and our big cruise ship got fairly close to the glacier, but not close enough that the falling ice could hit our ship. We could hear it and could feel the vibrations, though. Then we had to back out. That was interesting backing a hugh cruiseship out of a fjord. I will have to say that that trip was the most awesome vacation I have ever taken. I don't particularly like snow, but the scenery was breathtaking.

The tour boats get up close and rev their engines causing the calving. It's killing the environment in the name of tourism. I was there and saw it happen.
03:55 PM on 08/10/2011
I was at that same exact spot while on an Alaskan Cruise last September. It's one of the most beautiful spots in the world, IMO, as there really isn't anything quite like it. It's unfortunate that it's beauty was somewhat diminished, because everyone should have the chance in this lifetime to see something so beautiful and serene.

She was injured. What's about captain safety regulations...why they came too close, knowing such risk of injury?
