It the Tories don't like it then Meryl Streep must have done a fabulous job. Tories in the UK are almost as vile as Republicans in the US and idolize Thatcher in the same way Republicans idolize Reagan. Having lived through Thatcher's reign I can tell you she was a monster. Think Palin & Bachmann combined but with brains and of course, no heart.

Rah, rah, rah. She was called the female Reagan and gave off an air or old line British snobbery when she was in office. I never liked the Spice Girls when I found out they adored her. She was very bad for women because she operated as a "I've got mine, to hell with you" token who did nothing to advance women's rights.

"Did nothing to advance women's rights." That's about the stupidest comment I've read yet on this site. She remains one of the world's most legendary and powerful politicians, quite a role-model, I'd say than some simpering feminist. Thatcher was interested in advancing the rights of all her citizens through political and economic freedoms (read smaller government, stronger markets) and of smashing the Evil Empire, which she succeeded in helping to dismantle. Only a sexist would suggest that she do more for her gender because she had a vagina in common.

Absolutely looking forward to this. Ms. Streep is a great actor and if that insane half smile after the "non-negotiable" part is indeed close to reality, Thatcher was apparently crazier than what everyone suspected.

The finest thing Thatcher did was to privatize the water and sewage authorities throughout England----made many people quite wealthy and still is! The water and sewage facilities are run much better these days, but at a substantial cost to the consumer. The question to be asked is why can't a government, whether national or local, run a public utility efficiently? They don't have to pay taxes or make a profit as a private enterprise must.

So, tell me then... why do we have so many private sector "gurus" running for public office or receiving public appointments to head these same very inefficient bureaucracies that are still.... inefficient?

Sorry, but to claim that the private sector is more efficient is right wing fantasy. I've had nothing but private sector jobs, all very large corporations and only one (the japanese run business) had any semblance of efficiency. Cingular, for example, was the most inneficient, bureaucratic mess I've ever seen.

No, it's the monstrous size of gov't that makes it inefficient. The same as any monstrosity of a corporation. Both must be curtailed in size if any good is to come.

First obvious problem for conservatives is that Streep looks ten times TOO GOOD as Thatcher. Thatcher was neat, tidy, and UGLY...........or maybe when she opened her mouth.

What do liberal women think of her. What do conservative women think of her? Did not follow her and have not seen the movie yet. Definitely willing to wait for TV. On already on? Not mine, LOL

Imagine an "arranged" marriage between ................little Bush and Thatcher..........who would have killed who? Talk about rough sex, LOL
09:43 AM on 08/25/2011
Yeah. As one who suffered through the Thatcher regime, mad dreams and hallucinations are about right! Pity they weren't confined to her post-public service life...

And Streep's makeup artist should be shot. Streep needs cheekpads, and whatever they do to make the T-Rex neck..., more splotchy foundation / blusher, more pallor. After all, she is playing an older woman - Thatcher didn't look 45 or so when she took office...

UK has so many wonderful actresses I wonder why one of them were not chosen for this part?
10:09 AM on 08/25/2011
Maybe their politics made THEM choose not to...?

But who would you suggest? (could be an interesting thread in itself)

She does look a lot better on that mini trailer than Thatcher looked in her prime. Thatcher was 54 when she was elected. Meryl Streep is 62 now, but, well, you know.

I was tempted to say that it looked a little bit of a caricature, but then I remembered, Maggie Thatcher was a caricature herself. But I'm still not sure it's a movie I have any interest in seeing... unless its in 3D, of course, I mean every movie is better in 3D, isn't it Hollywood?

These Radical Right Wing Conservatives are all scared little children looking for a daddy figure, even if its a strong willed woman. I expect that in some situations, that's preferable, kinda in a David Vitter diaper kinda way.

I dunno... I'd argue that Ieft wing Liberals are grown up adolescents looking to be dependent on the Nanny State.

Conservatives tend to be self reliant rugged individualists who admire strong leaders with character.... male or female.

Fantastical. If the conservative leaders were so rugged, maybe more of them would have served or had their children serve in actual wars instead of dodging and avoiding combat.

"Conservatives tend to portray themselves as self reliant rugged individualists who admire strong leaders who are characters.... male or female,"

Here, I injected reality into your sentence. You guys are like Alaskans calling themselves rugged individualists while every man woman a child there receives as government check each and every year. A check made possible by the largess of more progressive states. We in the donor states pay more in federal taxes that we receive back. Alaska receives almost double their money back. This allows them to send politically popular checks from the oil revenue rather than use it for the state's general funding. Basically we in the donor states subsidize those check.

This type of blindness if very common in the conservative mind. The guy who made all on his own often under scrutiny turns out to be a trust fund baby or someone who got a leg up from grandpa's wealthy buddies. George Bush is a good example of that.
