ah! Excellent point. I stand corrected.

Final Cut Pro X should be included, even it's a prediction, it's a safe one. If Apple doesn't come back with a professional upgrade alternative to version X, they'll break a lot of filmmakers' hearts, and kill some careers along the way. FCP changed the video editing world, and provided many, many editors with a career; and film makers with an inexpensive alternative to the Avid. Version X was mocked on Conan O'brian, and it's launch set tsunamis of disappointment through out the post-production collective consciousness as editor after editor realized Apple had abandoned them in favor of a consumer/home movie maker market.

Do you really think there are going to abandon a Market they created? There are a lot of benefits of X. We are starting to parallel a lot of our projects on it and for digital production...it's not without talent.
12:48 PM on 09/03/2011
That's the first positive I've heard about it. Everyone else seems to be running away from X. I played with it in the store, and one of the biggest let downs, to me, and other editors, has been the change in interface: at first glance it looks like a lot of muscle memory to retrain. Eliminating autosave (a function that has saved me many times), and the glaring flaws pointed out on Conan makes the program seem pretty unforgivable.

I've also heard that Mac is going to stop all of their pro products, and limit their market to consumer level hardware and software.

All that being said, maybe they fixed those glitches; hopefully you're right about the benefits, and not just an Apple rep trying to save sales.

'failure' is part of the creative process. Does everything in America media and discourse have to be a slam?

To be fair I think the Newton was during Steve's absence, as was Apple's brief experiment in licensing the Mac architecture to others.
09:48 PM on 08/25/2011
True. The Newton wasn't Jobs' product. It was nice concept though, even though I preferred the simpler, but more reliable Pilot introduced at around the same time. I had a lot of fun tricking the Newton handwriting recognition software as I remember.

You missed the Newton--great device, way ahead, zero interest.

And NeXT and its OS were both sexy and highly advanced.
09:49 PM on 08/25/2011
The Newton was too expensive and too big for a PDA. The semi-competing Pilot (from Palm) was much less powerful, but much cheaper, and smaller.

Funny enough the last version sold better than most Macs i was selling at the time. It had finally become a success, but Jobs pulled the plug on Newton to focus on the Mac.

Actually I always liked the look of a cube. I bought a Mac in 1985 (not a stellar sales year for Macs) I had to endure years of being told Apple was going out of business. Every time someone saw my Mac at a conference or trade show. I loved my Mac 2300C but my current mac book pro is an excellent machine. I am very impressed with my son's iPad 2. Laughed at him as he played Sid Meier's Pirates on it Sunday afternoon.

Which sold very well for over a Decade was was finally discontinued in the mid to late 90's. The II GS sold mostly into the Education Market. Heck you could even run a version of the Mac OS on it (v 6.08 for IIGS). Also I am pretty sure that Steve had nothing to do with that product. I think he was working on Lisa and later on Macintosh when the II GS was being created.

My reaction isn't as strong, but I understand it. Steve has released many bad products into the market and has been able to get customers who behave more like cult members than consumers to believe that they were getting the best. This has tainted how they interact with people who don't like Apple products, or just think that they aren't worth the excessive markups, because anyone who doesn't agree that Apple makes the best version of everything EVER is a heretic.

It's stupid to include a product that Apple didn't design themselves. The Motorola ROKR phone was only a licence of iTunes not something that Apple Produced. It proved to Steve and Apple that other companies couldn't be trusted with licencing any part of Apple's IP.

The new one is great - especially for the price. It streams Netflix movies far better than my blu-ray player and I can play my whole iTunes collection and photos from my computer to my TV and the stereo system it's connected to.

I like it.

NeXT Computer may have been a flop, but NeXT's OS, NeXTstep, is what we now know today as Mac OS X, so not exactly a total disaster.

For what it was, it actually sold pretty well. I sold like 3 of the things when they were full price. It was surprising to me that anyone bought them, but some people really love the Mac and the 20th anniversary Mac was VERY pretty and ahead of it's time. It pretty much predicted the flat screen iMacs that came out later.
