Seems to me we got here because a Judge picked our last president, one that gave us limitless wars and spending. A green Al Gore might have made a deference and kept us out of war and implemented clean standards that would have helped free us from our dependency. Now we have a President that is going down with the ship of fools. The single word JOBS will be used by every politician to undermine our health and wellbeing so market forces prevail. In the end we will have neither jobs or environment. We once had all the oil and sold it for .17 cents a gallon, now we have to buy it for $4.00 a gallon. That my friend is the reason for the economies demise. By increasing demand we will only sip further down the slippery slope.

The energy secretary's peekaboo comments on the XL pipeline could be a rouse to soften opposition to Obama's possible acquiescence on the project. But let's hope that the president gives us a pleasant surprise and veto (even though it would be completely out of his playbook). I don't know what political capital he can find that would allow him to veto and still get voted for in 2012. But the pipeline not going through is more important for saving the planet than is his winning a second term. He needs to trust progressives to save him, whether they can or not. The likelihood is that big money will give him a second term as long as he doesn't rock the boat. So the existential test of his presidency is what he does about XL.

Jobs and the economy are by far the biggest concerns right now. I believe Obama is seriously trying to run a very fine line between what will help jobs and what principles vis a vis social and environmental concerns need to be maintained right now, and what can be delayed until the economy starts to get a bit better. This is far from easy and, irrespective of our individual beliefs, we should be more supportive of the President in these difficult times.

Obviously, you aren't an asthmatic, like I. Man cannot breathe, eat and drink paper monies, regardless. As far as Obama and ecological issues, he is as literate and astute as Bush. It isn't and has never been environmental issues; it is the science of ecology, which states how the Earth functions to support, give and sustain all life.

In today's troubling and ecologically threatening times, we need a president that recognizes and extends validation to science, beyond all other issues, including the financial economy because the eco-nomics of the Earth are in jeopardy. Even the most stupid of birds does not kill his only nest.

People should also remember that the President doesn't make laws. Congress does. And once again the American people are expecting the President to handle Congres's job for them. Just like they did during the debt ceiling debate.

What will we do about jobs if Rick Perry gets elected ? He wants to make govt. as small and "inconsequential in your life" as possible. Wouldn't that include in the area of job creation ?? I'm sure Rick Perry would use it as his excuse to duck 10 % unemployment. But as long as Obama is in office, the repubs want job creation to be 100% his responsibility. Not a govt. responsibility .... but Obama's personal responsibility. Repubs are complete hypocrites.

Want Obama to do better? Then get off your duffs and elect more progressives to Congress. The baggers cleaned our clock last time out, in large measure because a bunch of Dems sat on their hands. Whining about Obama is looking in the wrong direction. The problem is in the mirror.

This is generally true, but the president has some big tests that won't wait for a second term. If he goes in a progressive direction on these, his popularity among the power elite and their minions will sink like a stone in a pond. But there is no choice. He might have to go against character and do something reckless for once in his life. Gamble everything. Because it is necessary for the planet. If he does, then what you advocate will be even more urgent still. But we'll see.

How about you stop sitting on your hands and find a better candidate for President? Like maybe an actual liberal? A genuine progressive?
10:44 PM on 09/02/2011
Well,mr.president,,,aren't you the agnet of change? Change for the "best" only to end up as change for the " worst " is what we got. Unemployment at 9.5% and jobs being surrendered daily. , You. Mr president , choked the air waves with your extreme views on the conservation of the enviroment because regulations did not go far enough to give us " clean" air .during your stage performances in your bid for the Oval Office.
Regulation after regulation after regulation that drove industries into bankrupcy and brought unemployment almost into the double didigit figures. With your ultra liberal attitude you failed to connect the simplest of dots together. Regulate and regulate and regulate destroying employment and the average wage earner . Ruslting in foreclosed homes, repossessed suvs, and depression sometimes hinging on suicide. All because of over regulating and having to give in to a liberal government that cares more for a tripple winged spider not having the proper habitat than the American worker putting food on the table for his family.
Stop producing valuable crops necessary for a healthy body and save the spider .In other words Mr.President, let starvation into the picture and let the farmer continue to be over regulated .
Jobs anyone ?

Can you give us a list of these regulations that you're talking about that Obama is responsible for ? Or did you just magically pull that idea out of thin air ? More likely, you have had that idea spoon fed to you.

Obama has done something no other president has done in history. He has defiled and circumvented the intent and spirit of the Endangered Species Act when he de-listed the wolf to placate Republicans illiterate in science and who are clueless to all the reasons they are alive!

For years, everyone called Bush the biggest Earth-hater in history and the worst environmental prez in history, but the way Obama is going, he is going to be crowned this title. Much science exists that man is, indeed, killing the Earth. If man can't breathe the air and drink the water, and all the ecosystems are gone with all the strands in the web of all life extinct, he is sealing his own doom.

It appears we are moving to a one party government; everyone with the mindset of the most conservative, folks who only care about monies and corporations. Earth always finishes last, right?

The Environmental record is failing on its own, sadly. From a different perspective.

"The rest of the world has begun to discover that the green dream is a mirage. Across the U.S., federal, state and city governments have poured zillions into green schemes. Most have been miserable failures." MARGARET WENTE

The tragedy in all of environmentalism is, most everyone on the planet is clueless as to how the Earth cycles and functions to give and support all life. Man is not breathing because of paper monies, banks or jobs; he exists only because of the Earth's ecosystems or the natural, real Earth, that which seeded all life and maintains it today.

Ecosystems are the natural and wild surface of the planet; ecosystems are created, supported and maintained by the richness of their biological diversity or native species of animals and plants, and modern man is in the business of eradicating and raping the Earth's living, physical body or ecosystems. Even the most stupid of birds is more intelligent than to kill his only nest.

When we discuss ecosystems, we discuss the atmosphere, the regulation of the climate, the sequesteration of C02, the entirety of the Earth's biogeochemistry, including the nitrogen cycle, the hydrological system [fresh water], and all ecosystems altogether create the very life zone of the Earth or the biosphere/ecosphere or life itself. We are discussing life itself. While Mars and Venus and other planets didn't get it, the Earth did. The Earth knows best.

Correct: Many, perhaps most, people think that the environment is some sort of feel good thing, like not littering. They place the soft fuzzy environment against the hard and real economy. But the environment isn't some luxury off in the distance. The economy lives in the environment.
People don't realize the economic value that we get from nature, and they won't until the fish are gone from the oceans and the fields no longer grow food.

Obama is for fossil and nukes. Period. Chu's official energy report used 5 year old solar and green costs, versus 2016 future fantasy projection from the fossil and nukes companies.

Rahm and Axelrod both lobbied for the nuclear power companies. The Obama admin sold nuke power tech to south American in the week following the Japan disaster. Obama’s admin cut solar and green subsidies and feed in tariffs, and massively increased nuke and fossil subsides.

Vote for the Kucinich type CPC progressives in the primaries and the dems, bad as they are, in the general.

The fix is in.

"Oh that Obama, he didn't fix the environment. What a disappointment."

It's OK to think that, but I have yet to meet anyone who said it and followed it with:

"But those Republicans, they know their stuff. I'm voting for Michelle "Lets Drill Up The Everglades" Bachmann. Or maybe Rick "Oil Spills Are Acts Of God" Perry."

Obviously no one is saying that-what they are doing is in essence asking
for the real Obama to stand up, whoever that might be. Nobody is supposed
to quietly submit and go along for the ride-people feel a sense of betrayal,
and since every politician is a public servant they certainly have the right
to voice their displeasure and ask questions.
Blind, mute, unquestioning allegiance is what leads to things like this-time
for everyone to recognize that.
