no I do not agree. Ebay has cut a few corners over time, and now we need to be sure this is not another one

Are you kidding me? Craig Newmark is a prominent Lib/Progressive who's eponymous website is a competitor of Ebay, one which the latter would either like to absorb or put out of business.
This action is clearly motivated by political coziness between this administration and it's supporters.

"Politically motivated"?
Do you have any evidence of that?

I am SOOOoooo glad to see the Justice Department investigating ebay!!! I "joined" ebay to bid on an item that was for sale one time. I didn't "win" the bid and didn't follow any others. Then a few months later I got a call from some guy wanting to know why I hadn't mailed him the money for a truck he had advertised and I supposedly won. A day later I got another call!! I contacted ebay and told them my account had been hacked. They did nothing!! The calls kept coming. I repeatedly contacted ebay and got nothing but a run around!! I suspect they were doing the bids!!! They told me to simply put the items back up for re-auction!!! I demanded that they close my account....there is an account closure process.....which is extremely long and drawn out and requires a ton of writing and reasons other BS and I stopped counting after 27 pages. It is accompanied with warnings that if you close your ebay account you can NEVER reopen it! "Great," I wrote in the box, "I will NEVER use ebay again anyway!!!" The calls continued for about a month. I told everyone about the problem and red tape to quit ebay and that I suspected it was a tactic to get me to participate. So, bottom line, I have no doubt ebay is a bunch of crooks and I hope they get busted!!

I do not believe you as over the last decade it is so easy to prove that the computer used to list the auction is not the same as the one you are using. It will have a different IP address and once they see it is not your IP, they will shut it down. I know some one who was hacked and it took all of a few hours to get it straightened out.

What does American mean to you, what does Chinese mean to you? I realize the difference in geological location but clearly you think the two stand for specific ideologies as well - I'm just curious how eBay is representative of one and not the other.
12:21 PM on 09/14/2011
Finally the DOJ found someone they can investigate...unless of course eBay so no they can't...then they will have to go back to waiting for someone they can investigate, because obvioulsy they do not want to upset anyone, ever...EVER...maybe they can find a dry cleaner somewhere they can bring down the full force of the law on, or a maybe candy shop...you know selling outlawed fudge or something...

I'm sure eBay is cheering - because you are right - it's another excuse.

This is why so many people won't USE them any more.

There are so many better alternatives.  You just have to force yourself to realize that they hate you and don't want you there and it's never a good thing to remain in a location where your presence is unwanted.
12:48 PM on 09/14/2011
I'd love to get away from eBay. What are the alternatives?

Let's see....Enron wiped out jobs and parts of whole countries....not to mention people's retirement accounts and investments and lord knows what else....and the Justice Department apparently couldn't have found them with a road map, a troop of Boy Scouts and fairy dust. As someone else pointed out, the evil cabal that made torture into business as usual in the United States is out flapping its gums and being the center of attention at 2-grand-per-plate dinners in the Great Red Hinterland....and Justice can't figure out a way to at least put the suckers on a plane to Europe where bona fide signatories to the Geneva Conventions are interested in speaking to the Three Stooges (Bush, Cheney, Rummy) and where the World Court, to which Bushleague unsigned the US might also have a query or two. And then there is the very real possibility of collusion in the financial markets, which seems to have had some deleterious effects on the US, and Justice can't seem to figure out how to get in the door, revolving though it is so the scurrilous CEOs of the banks can play sleight of hand with them. As fictional detective Nero Wolfe would have said, "Pah!"

Selective justice and accountability - it's all about who you know and how the "who you knows" feel about your particular attempts to gain some leverage in their system.

You're right! Oh, my. I am sorry. It has been a while since I've read any Nero Wolfe novels. Thanks for the correction. I guess I'll go get one off a shelf and read it. Pitiful when one forgets what Nero said! It would be almost as bad as forgetting who used his "little grey cells." Maybe worse.

They won't. Prosecuting Bush and Cheney et al would open up a whole can of worms about the wars they started with lies and those very same wars Obama continues with.

eBay was once a fun place to buy and sell odd slightly used items that ones no longer needed, but like many other things certain people has ruined it for all.

Ebay itself has ruined it because of their greed. They raised the rates charged or selling something considerably. I'll use Ebay though because when I want sell something it's worth it to pay that rate to sell it rather than place and ad on Craigslist and have a stranger(s) coming to my home.  One bad incident with Craigslist buyers was enough for me when a few years ago two guys came to my place to buy something and stoled some money I had left on a table. I saw one of them take it but they were considerably younger than me and big, really big so I said nothing. Just won't take that kind of chance again.

From the urban dictionary:

STOLED:

past tense of stole, usually used by slack-jawed yokkles.

So I should trade a worldwide market for a neighborhood one? No thanks, plus have you ever tried to get genuine help on Craigs? The "community help", which is the only option, is a joke.

Donate it to a thrift store.

Take a tax deduction.

They will even come by and pick it up in most cases.

So much easier.

And, if no one WANTS it, you are money ahead.

... and Craigs is a den of thieves and iniquity.
10:38 AM on 09/14/2011
I think ebay is a borderline criminal operation. Counterfeiters and bootleggers operate with near impunity on the auction house despite dozens of notices from the owners of the property pointing to the exact same individuals reposting the same fraudulent merchandise over and over again. ebay is knowingly enabling these fencers of stolen goods, and I think will eventually be brought down through the justice system.
12:54 PM on 09/14/2011
Borderline?

Please!

So far over the line.......

Did you know?  When people claim that they have received a fake designer item that in some cases eBay and PayPal have the buyer send the item to a warehouse they own and then they advertise the stuff in the warehouse to eBay sellers to come out and buy from them to sell on eBay.  They would have given the buyer a refund, take taken money out of the seller's account.  Then they lather, rinse and repeat.  It's one of their many major scams.  Someone pointed out to me a warehouse in east Dallas - one of the places where they do that - taking in fakes that they are then selling at a pure profit to someone who will put it up and then they can have it shipped to them to resell over and over and over.  It's so insane that people still think they can't sell anywhere else.

It's the biggest scam on the face of the earth.  eBay/PayPal really blows.
