God forbid we become a welfare state country like Norway or Sweden. As the good book says: By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground.
I wonder when do rich people sweat so much?

Rich people don't have to sweat. They're rich. They hire poor people to do it for them.

What a sad excuse for a country we've become.

Another poor person?

Remember what Reagan and his thugs said back in the day, "Ketchup is a fruit". At least the old folks won't get scurvy.

How many disabled and others on fixed incomes are now having to

forgo heat, a/c, and even food just to pay the monthly rent???

They don't have a voice.

We need to speak loudly on their behalf.

Why don't these "lazy leeches" just move to where the jobs are, get training in some totally new career and get a sparkling new job? According to "con logic" the whole process should cost about $11.35 and take about three days...four max.

I used to donate every month to local food banks. Now that my husband's business has tanked with the economy and we have one steady income, I can't do that anymore. And as my savings have almost run out (medical issues) we have faced "food insecurity" several times in the last few months. More of my friends are facing the same issue. And yet, the politicians want to focus on making Obama a one term president, NOT on the important issues facing this country. It is a disgrace.

Our leaders need to contemplate the fates of Louis XVI, Nicholas II and Nicolae Ceacescu. Civilization is a very thin veener (and becoming thinner with each passing day), and they'd be fools to imagine it could never happen here.

This makes me so sick- I was attempting to read a FEW of the gloating comments from the cons who descended upon the article about NY congresssional district and found it sad that they probably don't care about tthe poor- they care more about some random district in NY that has nothing to do with their lives, but they probably know someone who is hungry, see homelessness or are, themselves, a few paychecks away from food insecurity

Only if the fallacy of needing three square meals a day that was created to generate business for our over production of food is taken into account. Eating twice a day is more then enough. If your pet can survive on one meal a day, I am sure we can as well.
02:48 PM on 09/14/2011
One of the free sources are food banks. They generally want to know where you live but that is all.
Go there on their hand out days and see who is in line. If things get tougher this source may dry up and that will impact a wider range of people then you might think. They seem to have quite a bit right now but the lines are getting longer. The quality is ok. Lots of canned food and breads/cereals. Not much on fresh fruit or veggies. Sad day isn't it?

This source is already drying up in many areas. Not enough donations. And rarely will you find anything like fresh produce, except in the summer in areas where local gardeners donate their extra produce.
