IMO it’s all about their business model. A gay couple cannot produce children. If they are allowed to marry, that makes the statement that it’s ok to have a childless marriage. That in turn means that straight couples can then opt out of being catholic baby factories. Contraceptives would be ok because not having children would be ok. The end result is a major reduction in future customers.

I think opponents of discrimination often make the mistake of attributing religion, dogma, faith, jesus or the will of god or bigotry as the root cause and fight back only on that front. Follow the money! We need to fight on all fronts

You are not far off. Couples getting marries as Catholic must sign a commitment to submit the progeny to the Catholic indoctrination program.

But of course it IS "ok to have a childless marriage". Procreation is not a requirement of marriage - ANYONE's. ANYWHERE.

He's just afraid of losing more followers (and credibility). Gay marriage doesn't cause any actual harm to anyone...and the more people who see that, the less leverage Dolan and his ilk will have to fleece their flock.
02:35 PM on 09/29/2011
He'll lose more followers with this stance, since 52% (i.e. a majority) of Catholics favor allowing same-gender marriages.

As a gay man who has never had, not once, an inappropriate sexual thought about a child, I'm really tired of these guys painting me out to be some great threat to the American family when it has been THEY, in their immoral, self-protective cover-ups that have been a far greater threat than I ever could be.

ENOUGH RCC! ENOUGH!

The nation seems to have survived a huge wave of child abuse perpetrated by the letter writer's chums, so I guess we'll be able ride out the storm from same-sex marriage.

I'd suggest Archbishop Dolan reflect on his upcoming lawsuit and actions while serving in Milwaukee.

A lawyer for victims of sexual abuse by priests says he plans to seek depositions from Archbishop Timothy M. Dolan and other church officials over the lawyer’s accusations that the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Milwaukee, while Archbishop Dolan was its leader, moved $130 million off its books to avoid paying abuse claims.

In January, the Milwaukee Archdiocese filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, in part to settle lawsuits by victims of sexual abuse.

So, if the Church can't threaten the government into perpetuating injustices, the Church will threaten to... Do more of what it always does...?

Err, btw, did he just threaten a Vatican 'conflict' against the elected government of America?

This is why we *have* separation of church and state, and why we don't let churches dictate policy in America, especially when it comes to basic civil rights.

They can pretend to be the 'potential victims' here all they want, but don't call it 'freedom of religion.' Especially on this issue, they try to abridge *my* people's freedom of religion all the time. And clearly, they're the ones with the 'conflict.' And threatening to try to escalate it.

QED.

The Archbishop should stick to what he does best: molesting little boys and believing in imaginary, cosmic psychopaths.

holding a personal opinion and acting on it with the rights of everyone else in mind is different than telling others to act on that opinion at the risk of eternal damnation.
they dont deserve honks, they deserve being pelted with rotten eggs

Civil marriage is a contract under state law. Religious marriage is legally meaningless and not mediated by the state. One has nothing to do with the other. The evil child molesting bishops of the Catholic Church can go find some other scapegoat to reinvigorate their failing churches. They have no business interjecting in a political matter. Maybe that tax exempt status needs to be rethought.

Exactly, thank you.

There is CIVIL MARRIAGE and there is HOLY MATRIMONY.

Gays are asking for their taxpaying right to the former, leaving the religious faction to its "holy matrimony."

I find it ironic gays are often called "selfish" by these people, for allegedly wanting to steal the word, when in actuality, it is they who want to keep TWO entities for themselves, leaving gays with NOTHING.

Interesting disconnect they have, don't you think?

Yes, exactly. I never really thought about it in those exact terms, but what I have is a civil marriage. I did not get married in a church and I used a Justice of the Peace/notary public to officiate. I have no problem sharing the term with gay couples. What they do does absolutely nothing to "weaken" or change in any way MY marriage. Why do so many have a problem with "live and let live"?

The guiding light for the US is the Constitution, especially the Equal Protection Clause, under which each and every citizen is treated in the same manner. Mr. Dolan, your Bible, traditions, morality, religious doctrine can never trump the Constitution. Furthermore, since my church approves of same sex marriage, who the hell do you think you are to disregard my religious freedom. You have every right to bar same sex couples from your church doors, but stay away from our courthouse doors. Besides,Mr Dolan, I think men in floor length nighties and pointed hats have no credibility....outside of drag shows !!!!!!
