With the taxes they collect from our phone services, leave us all alone. Besides, there are folks who pay per call and are charged for any call to their phone. Personally, I only use a cell for emergencies.

Well sure we should...but it's not a thing to base a re-election campaign on.
Is it correct? I guess so.
Is it smart? No, it fits right in with all the banking-sympathetic measures Obama has favored.

Who's advising the pres? The republic party???
Way to gain more negative press guys!!!

Stop whining and pay your bills. You sound like tea baggers with your something for nothing.
Yes the economy sucks...everyone with sense knows why.

But ..this is no excuse. Debt collectors harass when you ignore them. Set up a payment plan-they will be happy to get what ever from you monthly...as long as it is SOMETHING.

No money, no job? When they call ask for a deferrment or forebearance. Things things give you time legally to get your stuff in order.

Both above options will stop the calls until you can get to the permanent solution: Unless its education or real estate STOP SPENDING MONEY YOU DON'T HAVE!

Simpleton, you have no idea of the situation for many of our fellow citizens. Collectors will freeze bank accounts without notice. This can lead to a cascade of late payments that people can not afford.
Stop whining, indeed. My finances are solid as a rock but that doesn't keep me from detesting the way the less fortunate are treated.

Simpleton...is that one of your college words? Even when speaking of higher education we must resort to this?

Listen...I live this situation. I have 30k in college loans.

When I didn't have a job I called for a deferrment...they gave me a year. Still needed time..they gave me another one.

When I had a job I called them and set up a plan. They let me pay $30 a month for over a year till I got stable. I had my second kid and they gave me a forebearance for another year.

In contrast, my brother tried to duck them, ignoring calls. They garnished his check because that was the only way to reach him. Sucks, but we told him. Freeze bank accounts? Never heard of that. Sucks if true.

Notice: Both times it work well was because I proactively contacted them...I did not wait. I can't speak to your person examples but I can attest to the experiences of me and mine.

However, I suspect that this may be another mindless jab at President Obama...

Oh yeah...simpleton.

I don't know about zeal...he just put it into a plan.

He has put a lot things going after wall street, but everybody is bought by wall st, everyone.

And to be honest: what can he do? Nationalize the banks? He linked C.E.O's salaries and bonuses to the TARP funds Bush started...they screamed "socialism!"...even the democrats.

Sadly, its cute to cheer for the occupy wall street people, and its great to get all populist but in the real world they don't matter because they don't have any money AND they don't vote. Obama pulled them out to vote in '08. They realized he wasn't super Buhdda Jesus Allah and they got all pouty...then we got '10.

Wall street will win until they are not the only ones that vote and fund elections.

Campaign finance reform anyone?

The borrowers, who played by the rules even though the game was rigged, are now being harangued for the expense of worthless degrees foisted on them by a corrupt system. These people invested in the future and prepared themselves to contribute to a strong, healthy America. That they happened to be born at a time that makes them the latest generation to be sacrificed to capitalism is not their fault but is just the unfortunate penalty of timing. This policy is simply a case of the administration jumping on the blame-the-victim bandwagon.

The borrowers, who kept running up huge debt even in the face of a failing economy now have to face those consequences. These people invested in something that didn't pan out for them - it happens to us all at some point. They have to, just like prior generations, learn to deal with the inevitability of change and change with it - at some point some folks thought they'd have a job forever making floppy discs or dot matrix printers - times change.

Many of those borrowers were in graduate schools and continued with the costs and education because their professors on a routine basis affirmed that they would be making a very comfortable living after graduation. I don't think that either the profs or the students for the most part meant to deliberately deceive or not follow through on the committments.

Please. The same thing happened in the early 80's for my generation. It was tough, it required frugality and hard work, and it took several years. But we did get thru it, like other generations before us. Get over yourselves.......you're not the first generation nor will you be the last to experience hardship.

The 'D' in my DNA stands for Democrat, but this proposed plan does not make me uncomfortable. Anyone who chooses to incur a debt should repay it. I do not at all support the sometimes merciless tactics used by debt collectors, but choosing to avoid such circumstances does not negate the responsibility to pay.

Democrats wanted the Government to take over the student loan business, fine, but ask yourself, do you want the government coming after you when you become delinquent or a debt collection agency???. now you will have both, with the government providing your details to private companies!!.

So you think it was smart to let the government give Student Loan money to banks and allow them to make the money from managing the program? The government control of the program is allowing many more students to take advantage of the program. It is not the governments fault tthat people don't pay their loans back. Where is the personal responsibility?

So, if someone gets a degree financed by a loan from We the People, i. e. taxpayers, then we're not supposed to have the right to ask for it to be repaid? If more and more people no longer have have landlines, then how else are we supposed to get our money back?

Defaulting on debt is may be something the Tea party believes in, but most rational people believe the government has the right to due diligence in collecting back money owed to it, since it IS taxpayer money.

If they had land line phones on which to get calls from collection agencies, you wouldn't think this was an issue. I don't know why people have problems with the government calling people to remind them that their payments are due just like any other creditor. If they don't have a job to make the payments, that doesn't mean they are bad people, but the government should still be entitled to make that effort on behalf of the taxpayers. Why hobble the government's efforts to retrieve revenue to fund services? That's Tea Party thinking.
12:44 PM on 10/04/2011
cognito, Don't put words in the TP mouth. The Government is intitled to its money back. It is Obama that wants free education.

I am sorry President Obama but I can't support you on this one. First of all, don't you get charged for every phone call on cell phones regardless if you make them or receive them. It is highly unfair to be charged for debt collection calls and secondly, student loans would not be in arrears if there were jobs available to those students who are doing what you are supposed to do. Get an education and you will find employment, nowadays that plan is not working. Ask the young people at OccupyWallStreet. There needs to be a huge national discussion on how to explain the 200% increase in college costs across the board. This one factor, our outrageous educational costs as opposed with all other countries, has multi-layered consequences throughout our economy. Health care costs, lack of engineers, researchers gross over representation in the financial sector. Those geniuses might not be at Wall Street if being at Harvard or MIT or anywhere else didn't put you in debt for 100K and engineering paid better.
