The Best Hot Dog in Chicago Bites the Dust

The best hot dog in the town famous for hot dogs, perhaps the best hot dog in the nation, Best's Kosher Franks, has been chewed up and spit out by the conglomerate that swallowed it whole. There are still a few packages in stores, and hot dogs keep well in the freezer, so run out now and buy all you can get.

Best's Kosher, whose franks ranked #1 in a double blind tasting of all-beef weiners by this taster (see below) has been shuttered. According to an AP report on Forbes.com, "Sara Lee also has been shedding businesses that don't fit into its strategy of focusing on categories where it is strong." According to multiple reports, the brand was profitable, just not profitable enough.

In addition to it's superb franks, Best's also sold knockwurst, Polish sausage, salami, bologna, chopped liver, pastrami, corned beef, and kishka (blood sausage). Sarah Lee also owns Hillshire Farm, Jimmy Dean and Ball Park brands, all of which will continue. The closing of the plant on Pershing Road in Chicago will mean the loss of about 185 jobs.

2009-02-16-dog_gate.jpgBest's was a venerable brand, established in 1886 in Cincinnati by German immigrant Isaac Oscherwitz, and nurtured for more than a century by his descendants. It was sold to Sara Lee in 1993. The company started its move to Chicago in 1925, set up shop in Bridgeport near the stockyards, and grew rapidly. At one time Best's was the brand sold at Wrigley Field, Comiskey Park, the United Center, and Soldier Field, where I enjoyed many of their garlicky, natural casing sausages. The story of Best's Kosher is told sweetly by Susan Berger, the founder's granddaughter, in an Chicago Tribune op-ed earlier this month.

Small profits, quality products, faithful followers, 185 livelihoods, and tradition are apparently meaningless to Sara. It's an all too familiar tale. WBEZ radio, the NPR outlet in Chicago, broadcast an interview with Berger and among the comments posted to their website was this telling eulogy by Larry Warsh, of W. Bloomfield, MI, who claimed:

"I was distributor for Best for 40 years and a broker for them for 10. When Sara Lee bought Best their attitude was that if a small broker could do the kind of business I was doing, how much more could their large brokerage organization do? It was a case of a large conglomerate buying a small ethnic company, letting go all the people that got Best where they were and putting in people that didn't really know about Kosher lunch meats. They were bound to fail."

It is not known if there is any buyer interested in acquiring the brand and/or its facilities. One can hope because, according to a BBC report, the U.S. has a shortage of kosher meats.

The lesson is that if you have built a business and you decide to cash in, kiss it goodbye, because there's no telling what the new owners will do with it. I have also lived through this heartbreak. In response to speculation that Perdue Farms was interested in getting into the kosher meat biz, one commentator on a Jewish website mused "Marcel Proust wrote about it in "Recherche du Temps Perdue." Proust's book titled A la Recherche du Temps Perdu was translated as Remembrance of Things Past. Sigh.

Best Kosher is by far the best I've ever had. After Best it would have to be Hebrew National. I would rank Vienna and Nathan's in the top 5 also. I have had Nathan's, but they are no where near a Best for a true Chicago dog experience.

If you ever get a chance, try SAHLENS' hot dogs of Buffalo,N.Y. available in regular and foot-long. These are natural casing for a nice "snap" off the charcoal grill. Or just buy a "TEDS" charcoal hots from one of their dozan or so locations around Buffalo who use Sahlens. Good stuff. It alway sucks to lose a hometown favorite, or even worse , cheapen the product to where it's unrecogniseable from the original. Sorry for your loss Chicago.

Actually I have had Sahalens and been to Ted's. Even interviewed the owners. You gotta love a joint that still grills over charcoal. But the frand didsn't impress me that much.

The Best's Kosher thing was an outrage.

I'll never buy anything from Sara Lee ever again.

For the best Chicago hot dog...go to Detroit.

Koegel's and Kowalski. Now those are good hot dogs.

Of course in Detroit they are not called hot dogs. They are called Coneys.
02:36 PM on 03/12/2009
Yup, and they are wayyyyyy better than what you can get in Chicago. Lindy's on the south side almost comes close with their chili.

Best Kosher is/was a find dog. But give Vienna a break, they're way above average. I see that your taste test dogs were cut into little pieces, which ruins the snap.

As for your tag line "Remember, no rules in the bedroom or the kitchen!" -- What about never put ketchup on a hot dog? (Might apply in either room.)

I agree. Vienna is an awesome hot dog. PBS once did a segment on hot dogs and actually showed how Vienna dogs were made at the factory including the ingredients. No chicken lips in those puppies, just pure beef. I would love to see how other hot dogs are made and what ingredients are used.

Yikes! What's next tearing down Wrigley Field. Bests are the best. A meal in a bun with all the toppings.

Nathan's are the best? You're not from Chicago -- you don't like the little "bite" at the beginning and you're not a fan of the paprika. No, you probably eat you dogs with sauerkraut (which is OK but not a Chicago thing), may be ketchup, certainly not a a poppy seed bun. I actually like Vienna. Or give me "Hot Dawg's" anytime (and I'm from the SouthSide -- I miss the place on 56th and Pulaski, "Hey Bud's" with the best greasy fries ever).

Farewell, Wrigley Field grilled hot dog. You will be missed.

Which dog will replace them at the ballpark?

:-) Telling you how wrong you are, as requested:
I think you've put Vienna Beef and Nathan's kinda low on the scale.
I would have at least put them in the "highly recommended" category,
and I find it difficult to believe that anything with an Oscar Meyer label would have outranked either of them.

That said, Hot Doug's is the shizzle, and I am glad you posted that exhaustive list of hot dogs, because I hadn't heard of half of them.

While it's sad to see Best's go, you have to look at it this way: If the original owners cared about its longterm future, they wouldn't have sold out to Sara Lee. It's like when you sell a house: After the new owner has the keys, they can paint it pink and yellow, tear it down, or whatever suits them. It's theirs.

History is full of these boneheaded conglomerate acquisitions that kill good companies. CBS bought Fender guitars and Steinway pianos in the 1960s and '70s and nearly killed them before they were sold and revived. Look at Jay's potato chips. Look at Fannie Mae candies. It's the sad way of the world, and the MBAs who run the companies get bonuses for their incompetence.

I don't know Best's but Nathan's are far from average. They are the best I've ever eaten. However, my comment on conglomerates taking over family owned businesses, I DON'T LIKE IT! And I don't like shareholders deciding the fates of businesses, they only care about profits not people and that's why we are in this mess.
