Where Is the Outrage Against the War on Thanksgiving?

Posted: 11/25/11 08:43 AM ET

What I want to know is why is there not a booming outcry about the creeping of "Black Friday" into Thursday by the bloviators, especially the super patriotic types on FOX? Why are we letting greedy merchants steal this unique national family valued event from their clerks, stockboys, cashiers, and managers?

I remember a few years ago the blowhards started whining about the "War on Christmas" because some folks suggested that wishing Merry Christmas to Jews, Muslims, and Atheists was impolite and that people with good manners should simply wish the inclusive "Happy Holidays" so all could be included in the seasonal cheer. To them, politeness is "political correctness". But Thanksgiving crosses all religious boundaries. It is an All-American event on par with the Fourth of July. Where is the patriotic outcry about the War on Thanksgiving, the holiday founded by people seeking religious freedom?

There are a lot of reasons to regard Thanksgiving as a patriotic event. Think about this: We are a nation of immigrants, every nationality on earth. Every culture, every language. Politics and religion divide us deeply and profoundly. But once a year we get together with our families, fractious though they may be, give thanks, and share a feast.

Some of us may have lasagna or prime rib, but most of us, across the vastness of the nation, across all age groups, across politics and religion, share a menu of turkey, once proposed to be our national bird; dressing made from bread, the humblest and noblest of foods; potatoes, the most earthy peasant food; cranberries, a sweet sour bauble like life itself; something green to make Mom happy; and All-American apple pie.

OK, at your house you might skip the cranberries or prefer pumpkin pie, but the thought that so many of us are sharing this feast, this similar menu, this celebration, this unique national cultural touchstone, is enough to make me weep, all the more because food, my great love, is at the center of the action.

The event stretches not only nationwide, but to Americans overseas, to war zones, to expats on the job in Johannesburg or Johannisberg, and back in time to 1621, less than a year after the Mayflower dropped British colonists in Plymouth, MA. They left England to escape the persecution of the religious majority, and they gave thanks for their first harvest by sharing a feast with the native Wampanoag tribe. The celebration continued informally until 1863 when President Lincoln proclaimed a national Thanksgiving Day to be held each November. That means the feast we are sharing with friends and family today has been shared like this for almost 400 years, far longer a national celebration than Independence Day. The Thanksgiving ceremonial repast makes us all part of an unparalleled time-space continuum.

To me Thanksgiving is every bit as meaningful and profound as the Fourth of July. Yes, the flag is a potent symbol, and I swell with pride as much as the next guy at its sight, but the flag is everywhere from bumper stickers to bandanas. But when I sit down for dinner on the fourth Thursday in November and reflect on the fact that I am part of a ritual feast shared by so many for so long, I am deeply and truly awed. More so when I realize that thousands of you are eating my recipes.

And then, as I chew, I wonder, why don't I cook turkey more often? And the answer is clear. Because Thanksgiving and all the fixins are sacred. Let's keep it that way. Let's not go shopping til Friday morning and let's tell the shopkeepers to let their employees spend this special American day with their families and friends.

I KNOW!! I can't believe it. It's ridiculous. My sister is a manager at the Gap, she can forget spending Thanksgiving with her husband and kids for sure.

I don't shop black friday and I wouldn't shop on Thanksgiving EVER. I think it's unfortunate when healthcare workers have to work on Thanksgiving and Christmas (I used to be one of them)... But when merchants make their employees work late on Thanksgiving and then return to work at Midnight for black friday... that's just GREED! I want the economy to improve just like everyone else... but please... this is just ridiculous..

We had a bomb scare and a shooting in my state. Now I have read about pepper spray and riots over $2.00 waffle makers. While I never want violence to affect any one, I can only hope this type of mania over cheap merchandise causes stores to re-think this practice.

How freaking good can a $2.00 waffle maker be?

A few days ago, a Huffpost headline writer called Thanksgiving "Black Friday Eve." It was a harsh blow in the war on Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving provides much for the media to be thankful for, and it always comes with all the fixins': For days they predict the dreaded busiest travel day of the year; then they bury us in inane anticipation of black Friday; then they report (with feigned horror) all the mayhem when crowds rush the doors on Friday morning; and today we're into day three of TV news's nonstop slicing and dicing of the meaning of black Friday. In between, they fit stories on the misery of having to tolerate our intolerable family members as we fulfill our Thanksgiving obligations.

I'm thankful for the lovely Thanksgiving dinner I enjoyed with people I love. And as always, I'm thankful for my remote control.

I blame the consumers and the breakdown of thhe family. Every year millions get sloshed on Wednesday, loathe about seeing family on Thursday, and then set up grandiose plans for Black Friday.

We won't see outrage until these very people suddenly see their workplaces cancel on Thanksgiving and force their employees to work on Thursday and Friday. I'm not taking about retail workers, but everyone else.

Sorry that has not worked. Time to get fighting mad! Too many for too long ignored what was going on in the country and happening to this nation. Time to pay attention speak up and out! We the people are a powerful force when united! The S/G/P is to blame and their power needs take away or at least cut down to size. The American Republic was Great and respected, this secular, socialist, globalist mess has made us a bankrupt laughing a stock. I mean morally as well as financially bankrupt!

You do see the irony in blaming "socialism" for things like the capitalist feeding frenzy surrounding Christmas, don't you?

I think the deeper issue behind "The War on Thanksgiving" is that people care less about spending quality time with their family (regarding it as a chore instead of a pleasure), and would prefer to spend their day off shopping for themselves, or for junk for family members that would probably appreciate it more if they would spend time with them.

Bottom line: Keep Thanksgiving "sacred" and leave the shopping for the day after. If someone is really that desperate to shop on Thanksgiving, they can take to the internet.

Where's the outcry? It's right here! I've hated the stealing of Thanksgiving since I first became aware of the crime. My first season in retail. I boycott "Black Friday" by enjoying time at home and with my loved ones and support Small Business Saturday by visiting local merchants at a reasonable time the following day. As an Irish-American with an understanding of the historical event of the first "Black Friday", I find the current meaning particularly strange. Though with the violence, bloodshed and general rule of rudeness, the naming is becoming more and more apt.

Please Meathead, some tolerance for those that suffer Thanksgiving only to get to the mass marketing and sales of the next day. You surely know that commercialism is what is important to Fox New brand.
Thank you for pointing it out so cleverly Merry Xmas, and Happy Holidays to you :)

I've never understood why the War-on-Christmas Whiners are more concerned about people acting in the SPIRIT of Christmas by showing kindness and being polite to their fellow humans than they are about an allegedly sacred holiday (lets pretend for a moment it wasn't stolen from the pagans) being turned into an orgy of materialism.

Speak for yourself. i vowed to never shop on Black Fridays and I have kept that promise for the past 10 years. The stuff on sale is a bunch of crap and the sales will get better as we get closer to Christmas. This year, like Meathead, I was incensed when I read that some merchants were opening up at 10PM on Thursday night. Inane!!!

Makes you sick doesn't it? God help this country, actually nothing wrong with the country just the people running (ruining) it and in it! Take care, keep posting and blessings! I am thankful for people like you, while there is sanity and common sense and respect for the right kind of tradition there is still hope! God restore America to it's former glory!

What about the outrage over The war on Black Friday?

No one is complaining about the warping of this late 20th Century Holiday. No one is lamenting over the early rising, standing in the cold half asleep, caffiene deprived waiting for the ultimate deal of the year to make the kids happy. Or yourself.

It took Presidential action to fix Thanksgiving, we May need intervention from the White House to save this holiday too!
10:12 AM on 11/27/2011
Because people who complain about the fictional War on Christmas are actually narcissists who hate religious pluralism, not people who actually worry about Christmas.

They probably dislike Thanksgiving because it is a holiday that discourages their entitled whining.
