Helping McCain: The Man Needs An intervention

digg Share this on Facebook Huffpost - stumble reddit del.ico.us RSS

I spoke yesterday before the Washington Post editorial board on some of the work I do outside my day job.

A major theme is that John McCain has a lot to offer, but over the last year, we've heard nothing from him; instead, we hear from the predatory lobbyists putting words in his mouth. That's why he seems to have flip flopped so much recently; the best example, by undermining the troops by attacking the new GI Bill, while misrepresenting it.

I suggest that the people who admire him (including me) find a way to stage an intervention to free him.

Much too late for an intervention. He has become a puppet EXACTLY LIKE his dear buddy Bush.

Intervention is fine with me - as long as you get him to a locked facility

If you're gullible enough to let lobbyists run your campaign, and you're surprised when the whole "maverick" thing is lost on everyone on account of it, you don't need an intervention, you need a nice pasture.

Admire him? John McCain? I once did when he made sense in 2000. Those days are gone. I just hope his 'current admirers' don't vote for him and take this country to total ruin.

John McCain ONLY made sense on tv, and then only if you weren't paying close attention. The inconsistencies, weathervaning, flipflops and evasions were all present from the outset.

Same here. Once I would have voted for him, but that was before he cuddled up on Bush's lap to be petted.

Make sure you take his car keys.

Make sure he bow his head when he gets into a car. Those cuts on top of his head make me wonder,

If he wants to be President of the United States of America let him fend for himself, look what happened with Bush and see the mess we are in.

i'm sorry, mccain does have a brain right? so he can always, as obama does, just say NO to any advice on what to say if it runs contrary to what he believes........mccain appears to flip flop cos HE IS nowt but a chronic flip flopper. i dont think he really knows where he stands anymore.

also, if its true that the lobbyists surrounding john mccain are pulling his puppet strings during the campaign.....what do you think they will be doing if we are so stupid to elect mccain president???

I think you miss the point about McCain. It's not that he's become a flip-flopper, it's that he always was.

Before this, he skated along despite his radical changes of direction, thanks to a compliant press corps. Now, though, it's all much more out in the open and what it exposes is an individual without many principles, other than a pigheaded form of militaristic patriotism. Other than this, almost all the issues on which he was once thought a "maverick" or "independent" were positions he took for political expediency.

Campaign finance reform? That was excellent way to draw attention from his part in the Keating Five scandal and his ongoing cozy relationships with lobbyists and corporate interests.

Fiscal conservativism? He was against tax cuts without deficit reduction when that was good for votes in Arizona. Now he supports tax cuts without limit.

Take a look at his ratings from various liberal and conservative groups over the years and look for the big swings. The biggest were around the time of the 2000 election and then again - guess when? - within the last two years.

He's a self-centered opportunist with an engaging manner. They usually have that, you know.

I would not want to be the Democrat who loses what appears to be a landslide election because anyone took Mr. McCain for granted.

One terrorist attack, one large campaign error can turn the electorate on a dime. Mr. Obama must enlarge his audience by telling everyone who he is, what he represents, speak to the issues, and surround himself with very smart people in all areas.

Mr. Obama heretofore is slightly ahead in polls but must create distance of at least 10 points.

Today, polls are reporting that Obama is 15 points ahead of McCain.

Did you ever hear of "digging for the facts"? Sen Obama has told us who he is, what he stands for, what his policies are, who they will affect, positively( middle class and small businesses) and negitively( the rich), He already surrounds hisself with very smart and capable people. The only thing we dont know as yet, is who the VP is going to be....

RELAX....all good things come to those who wait.

Coll prof is absolutely right. Neither Obama nor his supporters can afford to be complacent.

"One terrorist attack,....."

I fear that too. I wonder why the Israelis are target practicing and feel it has to do with the Bush administration's tacit approval and possible hit on Iran. This could result in the terror attack that the fear mongers will use to discredit Obama. The GOP are past masters at this fear mongering method. It has kept a mentally challenged lunatic in office for two terms.

Forget the polls, check out the betting line instead. It may shock you to learn that gamblers have been more accurate in predicting political races historically than any other group, including all the high profile political pundits you might care to name. Among gamblers, the spread is 34 points in Obama's favor.

It's hard to stage an intervention with a senile person. They never remember it the following day.

The Rethuglicans will be staging an intervention. McCain will not be the nominee.

Awe, let him be Prom King in Rove's Twilight Ballroom. He's tough enough to endure the beating the RNC has coming.

What makes you think the former McCain was any more "real" than the present version? Because the old one flattered journalists?

somewhere in the Arizona desert there is a pod, hidden amongst the cactus and sage brush. Apparently, John McCain took one nap too many and the neo con aliens managed to clone him. Where is Donald Sutherland when you need him?

He needs an exorcism, which is why J'indal (sp?) was being passed around for VP.
