A Tiger in Bed

What's Your Reaction:

Today we will hear from Tiger Woods, the latest powerful public personality to be felled by a sex scandal. He will read a statement outlining his future plans and no doubt will explain how words fail to describe his disappointment in himself by letting down his family and fans. And with that he will join Eliot Spitzer and John Edwards in the flagellation-by-press-conference routine that has become a tradition in American life.

Each has paid a high price for his sexual misdeeds in power, prestige, wealth, and respect, not to mention the devastation it has caused to wives and children. Clearly, engaging in an extramarital affair, in some cases, several, is insanely risky. Each had to know the self-destruction that would occur if their truths were revealed.

But in the realm of recklessness let's consider one other aspect: they were all allegedly having unprotected sex.

One of Tiger Woods' alleged mistresses now claims she was impregnated by him twice; one resulting in miscarriage and the other abortion, and that during the three years they were involved the sex "was never protected." News outlets reported that Spitzer didn't want to use protection with his prostitutes. And then there's Rielle Hunter carrying around baby John Edwards.

So, here's one more confounding question. Why didn't they use a condom? That thin layer of latex may have been, as far as John Edwards knew at the time, protecting his presidential chances too. Theoretically, John, Eliot and Tiger would have enjoyed their secret lives forever. So then, why risk lasting evidence, like in the form of a baby? Not to mention the probability of disease. Sure, if you're going to risk it all why not go for it, right? Was it that adolescent reasoning that, by not using a condom, the sex wasn't so much a premeditated act but one of irrepressible lust and therefore not quite their responsibility? In Spitzer's case, the laborious financial machinations that preceded his liaison suggest otherwise, but still for someone so meticulous in his planning what about disease prevention? (Is this the conversation he anticipated: Honey, the herpes is from a toilet seat, really.) Or imagine the conversation that would follow a worse disease. According to a June 2007 study published in the American Journal of Public Health, as a result of male infidelity, marital sex represents their single greatest risk for HIV infection for wives.

And these are politicians who supported sex education, the careful explanation not only of anatomy and reproductive biology but of how to get the job done safely. What about being a role model? The day Spitzer resigned he was scheduled to speak at a contraception conference. In the 2007 YouTube/CNN Presidential Debate, Edwards spoke at length about how he has lectured his children about the need to protect themselves.

When one of Bill Clinton's personal scandals collided with his political life in the person of girlfriend Gennifer Flowers, Howard Stern sent his ace reporter to the Flowers press conference. It was the seemingly inept Stuttering John, who stuttered his way through perhaps the most probing and overlooked question: "Did Governor Clinton wear a condom?" It wasn't taken seriously, the other reporters seemed to be annoyed by the line of questioning, but really isn't it one of the most important questions to ask at a press conference announcing a sex scandal?

Tiger's poor choices won't alter the future of the republic, for sure. But there've been few more powerful role models. No doubt Tiger's immense athletic talent was solely responsible for his contracts with Nike and Accenture, but his squeaky clean, happily married, doting-father-of-two-very-young-children image was part of his allure too.

For athletes and for politicians cheating is as common as teenage sex, and that's the point. Sleep around if you want. That's between you and your family. But when you involve our families --vby being a role model to or lecturing our kids about safe sex--we want protection.

There are more important things to worry about than the "sexual misdeeds of celebrities. Get off it. What makes anything a sexual misdeed? Was Clinton's sexual deed a misdeed or JFK's Eisenhower's?
Our first priorities are to get out of the Middle East, get Single Payer Healthcare, close Gitmo, solve the unemployment problem, put Cheney and Bush on trial for war crimes, get Goldman-Sachs out of the US Government and get our money back from the mega banks. Forget about sex in America. Everybody does it, so it is not a crime.

the fact that tiger is not in jail for driving under the influence of a prescrip', and cited for unsafe operation of a motor vehicle shows that he has received treatment biased in his favor !! if it were virtually any other citizen they would be subject to prosecution for the criminal aspects of the situation !!!

True, so true. Just look at Dick Cheney who admitted to a war crime on national television but is out gracing the TV cameras as free as you or me. (But Into, can I suggest a new pic -- but hey, I'm probably wise to leave mine blank, so whatever.)

In one way, his controlled speech was revealing. He did mention that he "has a wife and children". However, it was a very late realization.

The whole thing was a publicity stunt for his sponsors to keep money flowing and to the American public who can be fooled over and over again. Would any woman with common sense, leave alone his so called "wife", feel safe living with this guy? I guess not.

The sensation loss with a condom may be part of it. I wonder if circumcised men are less likely to use a condom (many claim the foreskin's function is to maintain sexual sensitivity). If so, this runs opposite to the belief that circumcision reduces the risk of HIV transmission, at least in this country.
05:58 PM on 02/20/2010
that loss of sensation is just a hokey lame excuse, besides if anything it would make you last longer thus giving the woman more duration of pleasure and either way unless he is so impotent that in the time it takes to unroll the condom he looses the erection ! either way (short of impotence) he will still at some point climax, so why not give the woman more duration and a better chance of also climaxing, and be protected unless he is just a (ab)USER !!!

So far, to my knowledge, Tiger Woods is the only "cheater" who has recognized his compulsive behavior as a form of serious addiction and dedicated himself to "getting well." Although I have never been in "12-step" therapy, I have friends who have used it to cure other forms of addiction. I believe that he had to first come to terms with his own responsibility for his actions and then apologize to those whom he specifically hurt. Now he has to go back into therapy to ensure that he will not repeat his destructive behavior. We should respect his sincerity and wish him success.

If Tiger is divorced by Elin and then recycles the same women, will anyone care ? I don't think so.

Republicans: Stop manipulating the vote!
08:00 PM on 02/21/2010
It's more likely that he's latched onto sex rehab as a way to demonstrate to his sponsors that he would like to change his behavior (not to say that he WILL). Who knows if he is an actual sex "addict" or not, but it certainly won't hurt him to get therapy. Obviously his actions are a manifestation of issues in his psyche that need to be addressed.

What disturbs me is that golf demands its stars project this "family" image, even it's far, far from reality. Why can't people be allowed to be what they want to be? Oh, I forgot. It's about generating the most possible cash, not about telling the truth.
10:58 AM on 02/20/2010
Woods appeal was to his sponsors. This public display is protect his money flow and hope the stupid public will forgive and forget. I hope his wife takes him to the cleaners.
03:36 PM on 02/20/2010
I hope she took him to the doctor for a series of tests.
04:35 PM on 02/20/2010
The public apology was a function of his rehab requirements. You have to apologize to those you harm and since his transgressions caused Public humiliation of his wife, family, friends and business association. He had make a public apology. He could not glide by on the word "transgressions". He had to say. I cheated, I had affairs, I felt entitled. Rehabilitation makes you stop lying to yourself and lying to others.

Most of you didn't have a clue about what he was doing. Ask someone who belongs to AA....Tiger was taking responsibility and he was required to do it in a high profile public way...since his behavior created public humiliation for his family friends and business partners. Elin signed a prenup...which probably got more generous with each child and length of time she stays with Tiger. I expect it was pretty ironclad unless he felt he wanted to do more.

'Tis a pity he wasn't called Leopard Woods (or Panther Woods) - a solitary cat that has a yellowish-brown or brown coat with black spots and usually hunts at night. Which raises to the phrase: a leopard can't change his
spots. We shall just have to wait and see the next debacle.

Elections have consequences
10:19 AM on 02/20/2010
What nonsense. Tiger wasn't elected to anything. You can't compare the two categories of people. Athletes don't represent us, they play sports. They sell products. Compare athletes to movie stars not pols. We have a representational government. That means that we elect someone to act FOR us, to represent our ideology and our ideals. We have a right, a limited right, to discuss the character of those people we choose to send to Washington or to state houses or mayoral offices to represent us. Jocks are people just like you and me. Do you check whether your banker is screwing around on his wife. Or whether the guy who does your dry cleaning is a faithful husband? No. Do you care if the teachers at your kids school are married, divorced or cheating? Seriously, Tiger has to work it out with his wife. The advertisers will be back when he starts winning again. Were you writing this column when Brad cheated on his wife and then married Angelina? I mean seriously, famous people have sex. Stop the presses. Americans cheat on their wives. Shocker.

I agree. There's such a strong racist element in all of this. If white sportsmen had to apologize worldwide for all the women of other races they had humped, there would be no time for other programming. Curious that he had to bring up Buddhism, like having to say he isn't really black or only half black.
05:52 PM on 02/20/2010
oh yah play the race card as if that excuses tiger's actions and choices. btw he is made up of over half a dozen races so really kind of hard to pin it on race ! i'm just sayin !!!

I wish the author included the names of Republicans who also sought unsafe sex.

I would note that it takes 2 to tango. The women involved with these men were also taking horrible chances with their lives and should have been demanding their partners use condoms or no sex. In some cases, the women have unprotected sex deliberately, to create a child to catch some rich guy to put them in a confortable life, or to extort them for short term money. At least one of Tiger's sexual partners has claimed that the was impregnated 2 times by him. Of course it could have been many others who made her pregant. Worse to many is that she choose to have an abortion of one of the alleged pregancies (the other led to a miscarriage, a tragedy as well to many women who have that terrible experience).

Perhaps we need another famous person, like Magic Johnson, to be hit with AIDS to remind us of the the risks of unsafe sex.
05:47 PM on 02/20/2010
yah, like who was that congressman who was soliciting anonymous sex in the bathroom of the (minneapolis?) airport a couple years ago ? ! ! !

Comparing Tiger Woods to Elliot Spitzer might be the most ridiculous thing Ive heard throughout this whole saga. Spitzer, an elected official, made his name by vowing to punish those who broke the laws of New York. How many times did he stand before cameras at press conferences, with his holier than thou demeanor, to anounce that he had, or would, prosecute another corrupt official/ceo. Then in being sworn in as governor, he vowed to uphold the laws of the state. Then we find out he has not only not lived up to the cheated on his wife, but done so with a prostitute thereby breaking the very law he swore to uphold. Spitzer is a prime example of an elected official who has the mentality of "do as I say, not as I do". Not only have we never seen Tiger Woods pass judgment on others, but we have seen his profess to being the perfect husband or individual. Woods has never gotten on a highhorse, like Spitzer, and professed to be some larger than life perfect person. The people elected Spitzer to an office he sought, while all the while lying to the electorate. The public made Tiger Woods famous based on his skill as a golfer. If people idolized him it was of their own doing. He has never professed to being a perfect person. Frankly, the only person whose opinion matters is his wife. Its really none of anyone elses business.

actually tiger elected himself when he accepted large amounts of cash to be a public spokesperson !

It is bad enough, and deeply hurtful to a partner who has trusted a promise to be faithful to be betrayed. But it's worse when the partner has not kept their body protected, thus leaving the door wide open for his wife to acquire -- unkowingly -- any of a number of sexually-transmitted diseases including HIV/AIDS. Just as he plays Russian disease roulette with his wife's body he plays with the possibility that his children might lose their mother.

This is not US Weekly or In Touch or one of the other checkout stand rags. Why is this here? The whole affair has become a cartoon. In fact, since Tiger's SUV hit the tree it has been a cartoon.

Furthermore, Gloria Allred calling Tiger's "apology" a publicity stunt was very hypocritical. What on earth was Gloria's dog and pony show with Tiger's porno queen if not a publicity stunt?

Tiger was a fool and now he is paying the price. Let the matter drop.

More important things are going on in the world. We are being fed an overdose of the old Roman Empire's "bread and circuses" routine.

Some people seems to be taking out their hurt on Tiger, whose actions do not impact them in the least. Could it be, why some people are obsessed with Tiger and his sex life and are crucifying him, is becaue they were and have been cheated on by their partners.

IMO, Tiger's sex life is between him and his wife. It takes two to tangle and these call girls were willing patrons. I am certain that they were highly paid for their service. A frigging white porn star was crying crocodile tears for Tiger to apologise to her, go figure... Enough already with this story. In the Bible, King Solomon had hundreds of wives and concubines. This sex thing has been going on from Bible days. It is time to get a life and move on from Tiger's personal life. Some people who are chastising Tiger, if truth be told, are doing the same thing that he did.
