The Vampire Diaries Recap: The Old Damon Returns

Posted: 02/ 9/2012 11:10 pm

SPOILER ALERT: Do not read on if you have not seen Season 3, Episode 14 of The CW's The Vampire Diaries, entitled, "Dangerous Liaisons."

The apple doesn't fall far from the tree, or so they say, and when it comes to Esther Mikaelson, well, she's the craziest tree in the bunch. I knew that the Original Witch had ulterior motives for forgiving her son Klaus, but I never thought that she would go that far.

By saying that she wanted her family to be together again, what Esther really meant was, "I'm going to kill all my children because they are abominations." And how does she plan to kill them? By binding all her children together, so when one dies, they all will die, including Klaus.

Excuse me, but Elijah was just returned to us, and they are already planning on taking him away?! Life is really unfair sometimes.

Perhaps no one knows that better than Damon, who finally poured his heart out to Elena, but unfortunately for him, she didn't necessarily share his sentiments.

The eldest Salvatore brother told Elena that he loved her, and before Delena fans could let out a proper cheer, Elena totally killed the moment by replying, "Maybe that's the problem." Ouch! That's worse than Han Solo's "I know."

Clearly upset, Damon walked away, but with swagger that could only mean one thing: the old Damon is back! Sure, he may be heartbroken, but I really missed the old Damon. He was getting too soft. Plus, this means that Damon's returning to his bad boy ways just as Stefan seems to be thawing out his heart.

Elena is still hung up on Stefan, and Stefan, well, he's still hung up on Elena, but he's not going to allow himself to open up his heart again. It just hurts too much, you know?

After swaggering off, Damon caused quite a scene when he tried to kill Kol. However, Kol was trying to kill Matt, and anyone who tries to harm Matt deserves to be hurt.

(Side note: Zach Roerig did tell HuffPost TV that hooking up with Rebekah "would be short-lived... because one of her crazy ancestor brothers would probably rip my throat out right afterward.")

So after causing a major party foul, Damon ended the night with a seriously sexy bang: he slept with Rebekah! OK, Delena fans, before you start throwing things around your room in anger, just think about it for a second. Rebekah was totally bummed that Matty rejected her, and Damon was upset that Elena didn't return -- or even sympathize with -- his "I love you."

I can't say I blame Damon. Elena was the one at fault in this situation. In fact, she was at fault throughout the entire episode. In order to complete her binding spell, the Original Witch needed one thing: Elena's blood. Not only did Elena giver Esther her blood, but she also lied to Elijah.

Elijah, the "moral" brother, clearly has feelings for Elena (I know, how does she get all these hot guys to obsess over her?!), but it's too bad Elena lied to Elijah and helped his mother find a way to kill him.

Meanwhile, tonight also cemented my love of Caroline and Klaus. I mean, she looked like a princess, he said he fancied her, and there was even a horse! Caroline was definitely the Cinderella of the Mikaelson ball, but that didn't mean that she was going to let Klaus be her Prince Charming.

After Klaus promised to show her the world, Caroline went all J.Lo-circa-"My-Love-Don't-Cost-a-Thing" on Klaus, throwing the bracelet he gave her back in his face.

Obviously, she still has feelings for Tyler, but Klaus is letting Caroline see a side of him that I don't think he's ever shown anyone. Klaus doesn't trust people too easily, but he trusts Caroline and her brutal honesty.

These two are completely perfect for each other. Caroline likes to fix people, Klaus wants a companion and they both have series daddy issues. And who better to show Caroline the positive side of being a vampire than Klaus?

Even my roommate Jewlie, who has only seen approximately six episodes of TVD, can see the chemistry between the two. Just read the following exchange between us (note: this occurred when Caroline made her grand entrance into the ball):

Jewlie: "They love each other."

Me: "No, I think he fancies her, and she is disgusted by him."

Jewlie: "Yeah, especially now that wolf boy is out of the picture -- fixing himself. Klaus has time to make his move."

Obviously, this means that Klaus and Caroline are meant to be. Regardless of whether or not the two will eventually be together, I like who Klaus is when he's with Caroline. If nothing else, I'd love to see these two become future confidants.

Notable Quotables:

"It's not bad enough that they're moving into town, and now they need a house-warming gift?"
--Damon

Can we go back to the old Stefan, the one who cared if Elena lived or died?"
--Damon

"I've had training. I happen to be Miss Mystic Falls."
--Caroline, to Klaus

"You're no dog yourself."
--Damon

"When we were together, you used to let me make my own decisions. You trusted me. At least after all this, that hasn't changed."
--Elena, to Stefan

"You're beautiful, you're strong, you're full of light."
--Klaus, to Caroline (swoon!)

"No, I'm mad at you because I love you."
--Damon, to Elena

"It's just Elijah. He's so moral."
--Esther

The Vampire Diaries airs Tuesdays at 8 p.m. EST on The CW.

Moving on, KLAUSOLINE!!! How I've missed you!!! Everything about these two feels 'off the charts' right and their chemistry practically oozes from my television screen. I like the way they challenge each other to become more than what they've been. Now if Miss Forbes can just forget a certain hybrid that uses way too much hair gel, we're good to go.

Matt Donovan. I found myself wishing he'd be killed off the show until Krazy Kol (misspell intended) actually went after him. Then I (gasp!) started panicking until Daemon (another intentional misspell) stepped in to save the last mortal. I'm not sure what caused the change of heart as I find Matt to be a bit boring and well...dumb, but I was wiping the brow none the less.

Now to the love triangle disintegration. Damon is a control freak. And all of this arm grabbing business is, well, abusive. Every time he reaches out for Elena's arm I find myself thinking, "seriously, Elena? You're going to let him 'rag doll' you around again? That's inappropriate, aggressive and disgusting".
Ok, I'm getting off track, moving on, I can see why she's sick of him after all his bossing and babysitting.

I liked delena together coz they are adorable with damon's tizzy comments and elena's sweet smile but i cant blame damon for hooking up with rebekka coz elena deserved that ... I find elena guilty in this ep..

I have a question, I'm genuinely confused as to why Elena should be showing Elijah any loyalty. I'm not saying I don't understand why Elijah betrayed them at the last second. That was a tough do or die decision for him. But in terms of pure character perspective, because of Elijah's actions at the end of season 2, Jenna died for nothing, Stefan was forced to become the man he is today, and Tyler's off somewhere desperately trying to break his sire-bond through self torture. Elijah knew who and what Klaus was and chose poorly. He got daggered for it and everyone suffered as a result. So, from Elena's perspective, the consequences of his choices have had a hell of a reverberative effect on her life and the lives of EVERYONE she knows and loves. Maybe this will be brought up next week, but again, in terms of her perspective vs. his, I just don't understand why everyone thinks she owes him absolute loyalty. I ask this, as someone who thoroughly enjoys watching these two interact.

I absolutely do not accept any sort of pairing of Caroline with Klaus, except for her to participate in the death of the latter. Klaus killed Aunt Jenna! Even taking into consideration how fast and loose both the vampire and the human character play with the concept of life, he still murdered a member of Elena's family. Okay, okay, by the same token, Damon killed Matt's sister, Vicki, but it's not the same thing. He was turning her and things went awry, Vicki went out of control, threatening everyone, and Damon had to take her out in an act that can only be construed in the context of the show's internal ethics regarding vampirism as being justifiable homicide. By contrast, Klaus was bent on murdering Jenna -- or whoever else he could have acquired to be the vamp sacrifice in the moonstone curse. AND, mind you, he had originally intended for Caroline herself to be that sacrifice. SInce part of the appeal of Caroline is that she either won't use her vampire ability to compartmentalize her emotions or she lacks that ability altogether (More likely the former than the latter since the latter would take some explaining), I don't think that Caroline would do anything regarding Klaus's murder of Jenna other than take it massively personally.

These are some of my questions as to why one should root for Damon and Elena as a couple. A lot of the problems I have with them as a couple are the same ones I (now) have with Bill and Sookie on True Blood. On that show, I just don't see an honest way back from "let me shoehorn my way into your life by allowing you to be beat to death and manipulating you into falling in love with me through grossly false hero worship." Ian Somerhalder has even said he's not sure how these two could end up in a real relationship given the world of evil this grown man has visited upon this young girl. Also, I'm really grossed out by any idea that Elena owes it to Damon to be in love with him. NO ONE owes that to anyone, and the fact that it's insinuated that he basically sleeps with Rebekah as a perverse punishment for Elena asserting herself as an individual is beyond repugnant for both ladies. If Damon had said, "Ok, we need to work together to come up with a better plan than you just walking into Ester's lair unprepared," instead of basically saying "No, I'm in charge of your life and if you don't do as I want you to, any bad behavior on my part will be your fault," then that's something I could work with.
02:44 AM on 02/16/2012
"False hero worship?" Damon has learned to care for people and he has his small "list of loved ones" as Damon said so himself. He saves them because they matter to him and because it would cause pain to Elena if any of them died. And nobody said Elena owed Damon her love, but she didn't need to the step all over his emotions like she did. After seasons of her pushing him to feel and care and when he finally does so, she tells him that it's a "problem" a "weakness". Also, Damon has always used sexual relationships as a way to cope with hurt--ex: Andy, Rose, Rebekah--but that doesn't mean it's justified nor that it's Elena's fault. Damon makes his own decisions, so Damon sleeping with Rebekah showed the withdrawal of his humanity, not the "punishment for Elena's assertion" as you put it. Elena asserting herself showed how strong she has become, but she went a little too far by telling Damon that "loving her" was a problem, that him feeling was unacceptable, now THAT was bitchy not assertive. Anyways, Damon taking control was only him trying to protect Elena the only way he knew how: keeping her away from a room full of the strongest vampires in existence where he would be unable to stop them if decided to attack her. "I'm mad at you because I love you." Damon was scare of losing her forever.
02:45 AM on 02/16/2012
Really? Really? You're insinuating that Elena taking action on her own and going in with Esther was what fueled Damon to sleep with Rebekah?-->"if you don't do as I want you to, any bad behavior on my part will be your fault." And going on what Ian said, it does apply to Stefan too then. Both involved her in a world of evil, but she would have died anyways since she is the doppelganger--Klaus would have eventually found her and killed her or her whole family if she ran. Stefan has a lot of flaws too and has hurt Elena various times (now), so I really don't see how she could be with him either. It doesn't just apply to Damon.

There are so many hidden agendas that have not been revealed to us yet about the spell, the plan, the original Petrova and I bet Elena's blood will get even more important somehow as the show goes on. Sleeping with Damon might serve to humanize Rebekah a bit but I'm surprised Damon's stooping that low. Thing is I think that the Originals will be gone by the end of the season that was specifically dedicated to them. The golden rule of such TV shows- there's always a bigger villain.

Did anyone else notice how characters have been subtly removed recently? Jeremy, Tyler, Bonnie (probably with her mom), Alaric, etc. I think Bill will have more of an impact on Caroline dead, I can't wait for Klaus to find out that her father tortured her.

As for the pairings; I love the Klaroline action (been waiting for that since Tyler's sire bond), I enjoyed the irony in Damon being too sensitive rather than Stefan (in comparison with season 1) and I've got the random urge for Stefan and Katherine to hook up. Matt is awesome no matter who he's with. Holding out with no powers to your name is indeed commendable.

I think there's a typo here:

"Caroline likes to fix people, Klaus wants a companion and they both have series daddy issues."
Is that supposed to be serious? Just a heads up.

On the episode... As I was watching this episode I realized that I could watch an entire hour devoted to nothing but the Original family. If they decided to do a spinoff it would be awesome (okay, I know that won't happen). I'm surprised they've given all the siblings such depth. I was not expecting that back when we discovered Klaus had several siblings. I'm torn... I kind of hope Esther's plan works, but I don't want (some) of the Originals to die. Argh, this show!!!!

I'm curious about the Caroline and Klaus love story...

Amazing recap! And what a top episode. I had high hopes for Dangerous Liaisons from the first promo shots and it did not disappoint! While the modern day fairytale spin was a little cringe inducing, overall the series is back on track after last week's coup d'?t that was more boring than shocking. And all of my frustration at Esther's forgiveness (IMO, a shark jumping moment) was retracted when her witchy plan was revealed. Like Crystal, I'm sad to see Elijah (

This show has become my little obsession and last night is just one more reason why!
01:53 AM on 02/10/2012
I liked tonight's episode. IMO Esther is underestimating her children. I think they'll find out about her plan and try to stop it.

I dont think old damon is back.. if he let kol kill matt.. that wouldve been old damon.. old non caring damon.. but instead he intervened even after elena said that hurful line.. throwing his love back in his face... all i know is, whatever plan esther has, i hope it gets botched..i dont want elijah or klaus to go.. dont know the other originals, and i never particularly cared much for Rebekah so them dieing doesnt bother me. Elijah and Klaus tho, i adore them both
